The Highland distillery’s spirit has been aged a combination of first and second fill former Bourbon casks, before being treated to “soft filtration” and bottled.
The result is a light, crisp dram with notes of bright Bourbon oak, creamy grain, malt, vanilla, apples, pears, light pineapple, toffee, butter, a little peppery cinnamon spice and some honey.
The back label suggests enjoying this dram “any damn way you like”, highlighting its potential as a mixing malt. Indeed, we reckon this dram would do brilliantly served over ice with lemonade or cream soda.

And on it goes with the Bond House No. 1 Collection, in which exclusive vintages are released: Following the Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1996, the sixth edition, the Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1997 now was presented.
The basis for the 23-year-old Highland Single Malt is whisky, which was initially matured for 10 years in ex-Bourbon casks before spending the next 13 years in ex-red wine barrels from Château Montrose from the appellation Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux. During this time it developed extraordinary dark berry fruit flavors, as the latest press release from Moet Hennessy reports.
The vintage bottling was rounded off by the combination with whisky, which was matured exclusively in ex-Bourbon casks, and with whisky from ex-Oloroso sherry casks. And we read as well about “further, secret casks” …
Dr. Bill Lumsden, Director of Whisky Creation at Glenmorangie, comments on this seventh edition of the Bond House No. 1 Collection: “The Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1997 is dramatically different: lively with aromas of red berries, seductive spice, melting marzipan and floral notes. A Midwinter Night Dram celebrates a tradition in which the Glenmorangie Master Distiller would treat The Sixteen Men of Tain to a special whisky during the festive season as a thank you for their hard work over the year. The Dalmore 45 has been hand crafted by Master Distiller Richard Paterson who has used some of the distillery’s rarest aged liquids to create what Richard himself has described as ‘flawless perfection’.
Initially matured in American white oak ex-bourbon casks, the liquid has then been transferred into two different Vintage Graham’s Port Colheita pipes dating from 1961 and 1963 to create layers of flavour, which are indulgent, smooth and complex.
For its final flourish the whisky was then married together in first fill American white oak ex-bourbon casks providing The Dalmore 45 with a truly unrivalled finish. The Dalmore’s use of multiple casks is a fitting example of the distillery’s commitment to exquisite cask curation, which focuses on sourcing and utilising only the best casks from the world’s finest bodegas and wineries.
Purposefully retained at 40% ABV, The Dalmore 45 features exquisite flavours of red berries, soft liquorice, crushed hazelnuts, bitter chocolate and Manuka honey. This is followed by the sweet flavours of sticky toffee pudding, Bramley apples and juicy dates to finish.

The 2017 release of Dalmore 40 Year Old was aged in bourbon casks for around 30 years, then aged in oloroso-sherry butts for a further seven before being finished in first-fill bourbon barrels. The result is a whisky with notes of gingerbread, maple syrup, honey and brioche.
A 2017 bottling of Dalmore 40 Year Old, presented in a Baccarat decanter. This was initially aged in American oak bourbon barrels before being transferred over to Matusalem Oloroso Sherry butts for seven years, and then transferred into first-fill bourbon barrels. This release coincided with Master Distiller and all-around good egg Richard Paterson’s 50th year in the whisky industry.
Wow – this Highland malt is something else. 40 years young and aged in a combination of American white oak, Matusalem oloroso sherry and Amoroso sherry casks, it bears the hallmarks of master blender Richard Paterson, who put his Midas touch to the blend. Back in 1998, we started seeing some of Dr. Bill Lumsden’s first experiments as that was the year he was appointed director of whisky creation. For this Grand Vintage Malt, the whisky was matured in a variety of casks, including bourbon, sherry, and virgin new charred oak, the latter being one of the first times Glenmorangie used this wood profile. This is special stuff, and something of a time capsule to the early days of Dr. Bill.

A 2013 Ben Nevis single malt from independent bottler Signatory Vintage that was matured in a pair of hogsheads for eight years, before being bottled in November 2021 as part of its Un-Chillfiltered Collection.
Distilled at Ben Nevis in July 2013, this single malt spent the next eight years resting in a trio of hogsheads. In April 2022, the gang at Signatory deemed it good and ready for bottling, so they did just that, releasing this expression without any added colour, or chill-filtration, for the aptly named Un-Chillfiltered Collection.
