It is American whiskey, without question that is synonymous with the cocktail; all of the classic mixes were based around the American spirit. The Manhattan, the Old-Fashioned, the Sazerac – all classics based on the rustic spirit from America. The whiskey possesses the wonderful high notes and spice because of the prolific use of virgin oak in the maturation. Rye whiskey is one of the original American spirits, the basis of many of the classic cocktails we still enjoy today, including the Manhattan. In America, rye whiskey must have a mash bill consisting of at least 51% rye amongst other grains.

Here we have Heaven’s Door Straight Rye, created by Bob Dylan (yes, that exact Bob Dylan you’re thinking of) and Marc Bushala (founder of Angel’s Envy Bourbon) in a church in Tennessee. Interestingly, for their rye, they have chosen to finish the whiskey in toasted oak cigar barrels (they’re cigar shaped, they didn’t just have a load of cigars stashed in them) from Vosges in France! Very intrigued to see the impact this finishing period has had on the whiskey…
The Jack Daniel’s range grew in 2017 with the introduction of their Tennessee Rye whiskey – the first whiskey from the distillery with a mash-bill that different from the classic Tennessee Whiskey since Prohibition! In December of 2012, Jack Daniel’s released an entirely new and exciting whiskey different from anything they had done before. Known as Unaged Tennessee Rye, this was the first time in over 100 years the Jack Daniel Distillery had used a new grain recipe. Made available to the public with much anticipation, this was a very limited release so that the remainder of the rye whiskey barrels could continue to mature in the warehouses.
Technically not part of a series, this is still the 1st of 3 Rye Whiskey’s that will be released by Jack Daniels. Other than this Unaged Tennessee Rye, there is also a Rested Tennessee Rye which was released in 2014 and an Aged Tennessee Rye which will be released at a future date.

Today, this glorious libation is produced at the Buffalo Trace distillery.
