Irish whiskeys are often thought to be smooth, fruity, and triple distilled and many of them are, but this isn’t the full story. The Irish are widely credited as being the first to distil whiskey, though this is strictly contested by the Scots. The Bushmills distillery, for example, is the world’s oldest licensed distillery, founded in 1608. The Irish are unique in their pure pot still whiskey.
Irish single pot still whiskey is a mix of barley, malted and otherwise, distilled in a pot still. The unmalted barley proffers a spicy freshness that one associates with Irish whiskey. Some of the Irish blends are global successes with Bushmills Original and Jameson both being notable examples. Léoville Barton is not only a highly-regarded grand cru Château, but one that takes it’s name from the Irish ‘Wine Geese’ winemaker Thomas Barton. 12 year old Irish single malt whiskey, produced for the Jack Ryan whiskey brand, which was revived in 2013 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Ryan’s Beggars Bush pub in Dublin. The Ryan family has a history with whiskey bottling, though the distillery which they produced the whiskey in association with, closed in 1946. This is a 12 year old single malt, matured in ex-bourbon barrels and bottled without chill-filtration at 46% ABV.

Each cask has been constructed from five different types of wood, including Portuguese, American, French and Hungarian oak, as well as chestnut. The result is a complex blend marrying all different types of cask. Innovative stuff from Ireland.
A triple distilled blended Irish Whiskey produced in Cork and made, unusually, with all three styles of Irish whiskey: single pot still, single malt and grain. First produced in 1779, it wasn’t until 1913 that it changed it’s name to Paddy after legendary salesman Paddy Flaherty. Before that it had the rather catchy name of “Cork Distilling Company Map of Ireland Old Irish Whiskey”. Rolls right off the tongue that one.
This is an Irish whiskey that has enjoyed a finishing period in Sherry casks before being bottled as part of the Peaky Blinder range from Sadler’s. The name comes from a street gang that was around in the late 19th and early 20th Century, a member of which you can see on the label – note the all important cap, which apparently was where the gang name originates.

Red Spot is reborn! Mitchell & Son’s Spot Whiskey range dates back many moons, but over time a few expressions have disappeared from shelves, including Red Spot – but those days are over. The relaunched Red Spot is a 15 year old single pot still Irish whiskey, comprised of three different whiskeys aged separately then blended. One is matured in Oloroso sherry casks, one is aged in bourbon casks, and the final one is initially aged in bourbon casks before being finished in Marsala wine casks.

The casks were sourced from the Antonio Paez Labato family bodega in Jerez, Spain, renowned for producing Oloroso sherry barrels that contribute to the whiskey’s nutty and spiced aroma, as well as its layered and indulgent palate.

This right here is the fourth release in Teeling’s Renaissance Series, which celebrates the return of distilling in Dublin and Irish whiskey’s renaissance. It’s an 18 year old single malt whiskey, which has enjoyed a rather interesting finishing period – it spent 18 months resting in Pineau des Charentes casks! If you’re not familiar with it, Pineau des Charentes is a French fortified wine made with grape juice or must, blended with Cognac. It’s brilliantly vibrant and fruity, and those elements have made their way into this ace single malt!
Incredible 30 year old single malt Irish whiskey from that tremendous Teeling team! This astounding expression was distilled in 1991 and left initially to age in bourbon casks. After many moons, the whiskey was then married in Sauternes casks, imparting a glorious helping of bright, fruity sweetness to the spirit. A release of 4,000 bottles.

Made from 100% Malted Barley from a range of different ages including Malt whiskey distilled in 1991. Our aim was to produce the most flavoursome non-age statement Irish Single Malt based on our innovative maturation and finishing techniques while retaining the distinctive Irish smoothness. Consists of a vatting of 5 different wine cask (Sherry, Port, Madeira, White Burgundy, Cabernet Sauvignon) finished Irish Malt whiskeys. 5 year old single malt Irish whiskey from the Boann distillery’s Whistler range. This expression has matured in both bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks, helping to develop a rounded flavour profile. The Boann distillery is based in Drogheda, and recently started distilling their own whiskey too (this expression is sourced from another Irish distillery). We’re very much looking forward to seeing what they’re going to come up with!
A bold and complex whiskey from Boann Distillery, with bright orchard fruit flavours as well as notes of honeycomb and rich vanilla. This whiskey was matured in bourbon barrels before being finished in a cask previously used for oloroso sherry, released without chill filtration for fuller character.

The ‘D.E.W.’ in Tullamore D.E.W. comes from the initials of a General Manager at the Tullamore distillery in the later 19th Century, named Daniel E. Williams.
This is a 2010 release of Tullamore Dew 10 year old single malt Irish whisky.

This whisky is blend malts aged in old bourbon, port, madeira and sherry casks.This makes the 10 Year Old Single Malt not only the sole whiskey in Ireland to bring together whiskey from four different types of used barrels, but the only single malt of its kind anywhere insofar as I am aware.
In the glass, the TULLAMORE 10 Year Old Single Malt has the look of a deep golden honey, a far cry from the typical paleness of young and middle-aged Irish whiskeys. The nose has a certain lush sweetness and fruitiness to it, where a sort of sweet and sour red fruits note blends with hints of vanilla and caramel, presumably all from the port and madiera casks on the one hand and the bourbon barrels on the other. There is also a dollop of toasty oak in there, along with a dash of drying tobacco. Overall, the look and scent of the whiskey are very fetching, and the aroma in particular comes across as having a lot of complexity for a 10 Year Old.
On the palate, the Tullamore Dew 10 Year Old Single Malt brings over all the notes of the nose in bold, but not overpowering fashion. There is a bit of pepperiness there, but that is the only surprise. Everything about this whiskey is quite mild, but there is no chasing for the wine, bourbon, and malt flavors. Everything is right there and easily found, both balanced and a somewhat sophisticated. In keeping with Tullamore Dew, the whiskey is more sweet than anything else. The finish winds down from that new spicy note, into a long and mild warmth.
