Those of you who are all up to date with Game of Thrones lore (and if you aren’t, beware of spoilers ahead!) will remember that there were in fact, seven kingdoms in Westeros, but in the season finale the North became independent, taking the number down to six. The Speysider was matured in first-fill sherry casks, with a finish in American oak bourbon casks. The limited edition single malt is bottled at 46% ABV, presented in a metallic gold presentation tube, decorated with a pen and ink drawing of the mysterious three-eyed raven (aka Bran the Broken). It’s one of a pair of exciting Nikka releases based around aromas and flavours from fermentation and yeast, the other being Miyagikyo Aromatic Yeast, an unpeated whisky from Yoichi’s sister distillery.
Utilising their experience of using and experimentating with various different yeast strains, Nikka fermented this batch of whisky at a low temperature for a particularly estery character said to be akin to a fine daiginjo sake.

The North British distillery is the third largest of Scotland’s seven grain distilleries. The distillery was founded in Edinburgh in 1886/7 by several well-known men who wanted to maintain their independence from DCL. Its name comes from the railway company that served the distillery. Although maize is the key grain used for distillation, the mash bill contains up to 20% malted barley. This 25-year-old single-grain Scotch joins the Cinema Series from That Boutique-y Whisky Company, bottled up at cask strength.

An Indian single malt whisky from the Paul John distillery, located in tropical Goa. Paul John distillery uses six row barley that is sourced from foothills of the Himalayas. The high fibre and protein content in six row barley, offers a distinct tannic character to the spirit. The tropical climate for maturation means a high angel’s share, 8-10%, as opposed to Scotland’s 2-3%. After just six years of maturation, around 40% of the cask contents is lost to evaporation. That loss would take around 24 years in Scotland! A cracking addition to That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s Cinema Series, with a label that imagines James Bond, Bollywood style.

A frankly monstrous whisky from blenders and bottlers Fox Fitzgerald, this is Peat’s Beast at a whopping 54.1% ABV. Peat’s Beast is a single malt from a mystery Islay distillery, adding further intrigue to this delicious and smoky whisky. The complexity in this dram has been kicked up a notch, not just by its strength, but by its finishing period in Pedro Ximinez Sherry casks. Pedro Ximinez is the sweetest style of sherry, and here it marries perfectly with the robust smoky flavours of this whisky. The nose brings huge smoky aromas, with a dense grassy and earthy peat, accompanied by a sherried fruit, and some thick malty notes. The palate is hot and thick, with a buttery caramel flavour accompanied by peat smoke and succulent stone fruit: plums and cherries. The finish is smoky and medium in length with a little toasted woodspice. This whisky is non-chill-filtered, so the drinker gets to enjoy all the texture and flavour of the spirit at its best.
