Created using triple-distilled single malt from the Great Northern Distillery in County Louth, Ireland that was aged in bourbon casks for three years, this Nomad edition was then transferred to Bodegas González Byass where it is popped into oloroso sherry casks previously used to mature the González Byass Alfonso. While the Tomintoul distillery is well-known for its laid-back expression (earning the nickname “the gentle dram”), it also produces a line of heavily-peated whiskies released under the Old Ballantruan name. This expression, launched in mid-2018, features smoky whisky matured for at least 15 years before bottling at 50% ABV.
All dressed up in an appropriately coastal shade of blue, it’s Old Pulteney 10 Year Old! The maritime single malt spent its decade of ageing in second fill American oak bourbon barrels, and was then bottled at 40% ABV. As always, there’s just a hint of seaside salinity amid the creamier notes from the cask.

A frankly monstrous whisky from blenders and bottlers Fox Fitzgerald, this is Peat’s Beast at a whopping 54.1% ABV. Peat’s Beast is a single malt from a mystery Islay distillery, adding further intrigue to this delicious and smoky whisky. The complexity in this dram has been kicked up a notch, not just by its strength, but by its finishing period in Pedro Ximinez Sherry casks. Penderyn Sherrywood is matured in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-Oloroso Sherry casks – a change from their classic expression, which is finished in Madeira casks.
Launched in 2015, the Port Askaig 100° Proof is a big, smoky single malt Scotch whisky from an undisclosed Islay distillery. This is bottled at 57.1% ABV – which is 100° Proof in a traditional system of alcohol content measurement (different from 100 proof, which you’re much more likely to see on American bottlings).
Port Askaig 28 Year Old was bottled by Elixir Distillers, from a small, specially selected batch of refill American oak hogsheads. Complex, coastal and peaty, this Islay single malt has herbal aromas of mint, smoked tea leaves and pine, alongside almonds, tropical fruits and vanilla. The palate offers notes of orange peel, custard and cinnamon, alongside salty, savoury notes.

The first Port Ellen Annual Release goes for much more these days, but for many people (including at least one TWE staff member) the second release, bottled at 59.35% in 2002, remains at the top of the pile for official PE. A magnificent whisky.

Fabulous 12 year old single malt from Royal Brackla! Bottled at 46% ABV, this whisky was finished in Oloroso sherry casks imparting a fantastically fruity, spiced depth of flavour. Royal Brackla was the first distillery to be granted the ‘royal’ warrant by King William IV back in 1833!

A 12 year old was distillery at the Lochnagar distillery, once visited by Queen Victoria when she was staying at nearby Balmoral.
The limited-edition Scotch you see here is Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old, a Highland stalwart from a distillery that was said to be a favourite of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and is conveniently situated close to Balmoral Castle. Combined with its proximity to Cairngorms National Park, an area that contains one quarter of Scotland’s native forest and plenty of deer, it’s little wonder that it was paired with House Baratheon, a house with plenty of royal connections and whose sigil features a rampant stag.
From a tiny distillery in Orkney, Scapa is often overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbour Highland Park. This 14yo was quite a shortlived bottling -it was introduced by then new owners Chivas Brothers to replace the old 12yo, but was subsequently superseded by the now-familiar 16 year old standard official bottling.
Scapa released this 16 year old expression in 2008 to replace the popular 14 year old. Highly regarded in its time, the 16 year old was discontinued in 2015.
The initially controversial 16yo official expression of Scapa is now winning people round with a jump in quality after a few wobbly years following the rapid transition from the much-loved 12yo via the short-lived 14yo. Orkney’s less shouted about (but still lovely in its own way) malt whisky has found its feet

Back with a five batch, a superb cask-strength whisky joins the ampersand-laden Seaweed & Aeons collection. This edition of the revered Islay single-malt spent ten years maturing, with the full batch enjoying an additional finish in sherry casks. Not only that – the whisky was then bottled at a hearty cask strength of 54.9%. So you get bonus ampersands, bonus sherry, and bonus ABV here, this whisky really does have it all and more.
Peat and sherry is a great combo, though sometimes it can be a bit like a shouting match between a foghorn and a washing machine full of pots and pans. Thankfully, this one shows off a welcome harmony between the two. It’s a marvellous variation of Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire, featuring the same smoky 10 year old Islay single malt, though instead of just 25% of it being finished in sherry casks, the entirety of the whisky was finished in them. The powerfully peaty notes at its core are mellowed by just enough sherry sweetness, making for a superbly well-balanced flavour profile.
This right here is a 10-year-old single malt from an undisclosed distillery on Islay, with 25% of it having been finished in first-fill oloroso sherry casks, and bestowed the decidedly descriptive name Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire. If those four words (and three ampersands) aren’t quite enough of an explanation of what this expression is all about, here are a few more: stripped-back, smoky, complex, a bit sherried, balanced, coastal. Yeah, that should do it. Great for people who love uncompromising Islay whisky and sans-serif fonts.

The ruling Lord of the Riverlands, House Tully embodies the power and ferocity of the rivers it sits between. Using the power found in their positioning, House Tully forged strong alliances and built a history of honour, family and duty. Built along the banks of the River Fiddich, Glendullan Distillery originally relied on the waters it lay beside, using a water wheel to power the entire distillery. Like the Tullys themselves, this single malt can benefit from a splash of water, opening up flavours of green apple, honey and sweet vanilla.

Well, look at this! A glorious 21 year old single malt from the Singleton of Dufftown, this expression showcases the expertise of its Master of Malts, Maureen Robinson. Uniting a trio of different cask styles – Oloroso seasoned Pedro-Ximenez casks and ex-bourbon casks are hand-selected from the Dufftown archives and the single malt is married in European Oak casks, thus following the Singleton’s ‘Trinity Cask Harmony’ process. This 16 Year Old Speyburn spent its days maturing exclusively in American oak bourbon barrels, so this Speysider is packed full of all those creamy vanilla notes we’ve come to know and love from the cask type and Speyburn’s spirit. This was initially released as a Travel Retail Exclusive, presented in a one litre bottle at 43% ABV.
Bradan Orach is Gaelic for Golden Salmon, the very best kind of salmon. A no age statement Speyburn, named for the River Spey, a great spot for salmon fishing.
