Single Malt from the Highlands takes on many shapes and forms. Because the region is so vast it is difficult to make sweeping statements. The most popular Highland single malt (not including the Speyside region, which is situated in the Highlands) – is Glenmorangie. Typically, single malt from the region is put into four subregions, named for the cardinal compass points. To the north there are big bodied single malts, with cereal sweetness and richness, take The Dalmore, for example. Toward the south there are lighter, fruitier whiskies with a definite dryness. Aberfeldy is a shining example of this. To the east there are some full-bodied, dry whiskies with lots of fruit and pungency. The superb Glen Garioch is one such single malt distillery. The Western Highlands offer full body and real power with peaty, smoky overtones, nearer the coast there are some more maritime flavoured whiskies too including malts from Clynelish and Pulteney.

Definitive single malt whisky maker, The Dalmore, is releasing a refined new single malt, The Dalmore 45, to add to its exceptional collection.
The Dalmore 45 has been hand crafted by Master Distiller Richard Paterson who has used some of the distillery’s rarest aged liquids to create what Richard himself has described as ‘flawless perfection’.
Initially matured in American white oak ex-bourbon casks, the liquid has then been transferred into two different Vintage Graham’s Port Colheita pipes dating from 1961 and 1963 to create layers of flavour, which are indulgent, smooth and complex.
For its final flourish the whisky was then married together in first fill American white oak ex-bourbon casks providing The Dalmore 45 with a truly unrivalled finish. The Dalmore’s use of multiple casks is a fitting example of the distillery’s commitment to exquisite cask curation, which focuses on sourcing and utilising only the best casks from the world’s finest bodegas and wineries.
Purposefully retained at 40% ABV, The Dalmore 45 features exquisite flavours of red berries, soft liquorice, crushed hazelnuts, bitter chocolate and Manuka honey. This is followed by the sweet flavours of sticky toffee pudding, Bramley apples and juicy dates to finish.
Richard Paterson commented: “By personally selecting the very finest American white oak ex-bourbon casks and Port Colheita Pipes from 1961 and 1963, I have been able to create a truly unique expression which is indulgent and smooth with a vibrant and lively flavour profile. It takes time, dedication and passion to create an expression like The Dalmore 45 and age has gracefully matured this distinguished spirit to make it one of The Dalmore’s greatest aged spirits. 50 year old Glenglassaugh single malt. Goodness gracious. This was distilled in November 1965 and matured in a single hogshead until November 2016, when the distillery in the Highlands bottled it up as the oldest expression in their Rare Cask Release Batch 3. 285 bottles were produced.
It warrants saying again. 50 year old Glenglassaugh single malt. Goodness gracious indeed.

From Glenglassaugh’s third batch of Rare Cask Release expressions comes a 47 year old single malt finished in a single Pedro Ximenéz Sherry puncheon. Cask 2230 was filled all the way back in December 1968 and cracked open in November 2016, with 404 bottles produced. Batch 3 of the Glenglassaugh Rare Cask Release features whiskies all aged for at least 30 years. Blimey.

First released in 2013, the Dalmore 25 is matured initially in American white oak before a second maturation in a combination of Palomino Fino sherry butts and first fill bourbon casks. These are then married together in bourbon barrels before a finishing period in Tawny Port pipes.
In 2013 Dalmore extended their core range of stunning whiskies with the Dalmore 25 Year Old. As a distillery that has a history of using an intricate selection of maturing methods, the 25 Year Old continues that tradition. First, it matured in American white oak cask. After that, it was hand-divided into 25 year old Palomino Fino sherry butts and 1980s first-fill bourbon casks. And on it goes with the Bond House No. 1 Collection, in which exclusive vintages are released: Following the Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1996, the sixth edition, the Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1997 now was presented.
The basis for the 23-year-old Highland Single Malt is whisky, which was initially matured for 10 years in ex-Bourbon casks before spending the next 13 years in ex-red wine barrels from Château Montrose from the appellation Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux. During this time it developed extraordinary dark berry fruit flavors, as the latest press release from Moet Hennessy reports.
The vintage bottling was rounded off by the combination with whisky, which was matured exclusively in ex-Bourbon casks, and with whisky from ex-Oloroso sherry casks. And we read as well about “further, secret casks” …
Dr. Bill Lumsden, Director of Whisky Creation at Glenmorangie, comments on this seventh edition of the Bond House No. 1 Collection: “The Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1997 is dramatically different: lively with aromas of red berries, seductive spice, melting marzipan and floral notes. Glenmorangie have kicked off their Bond House No.1 series of vintage expressions with an absolutely stonking 1990 vintage single malt! This terrific tipple was distilled right when everyone realised that the year 2000 might actually happen, and left to age in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-Sherry casks for quarter of a century before being bottled at 43% ABV. The distillers in the Highlands figured that a whisky as smashing as this needed a rather handsome bottle too, which is always a treat.
In his Whisky Bible 2017, Jim Murray gave this a massive 94 points (earning a Liquid Gold Award), and also took home a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2017!

Back in 1998, we started seeing some of Dr. Bill Lumsden’s first experiments as that was the year he was appointed director of whisky creation. For this Grand Vintage Malt, the whisky was matured in a variety of casks, including bourbon, sherry, and virgin new charred oak, the latter being one of the first times Glenmorangie used this wood profile. This is special stuff, and something of a time capsule to the early days of Dr. Bill.

Wonderful Port cask-matured single malt from the GlenDrOnach Distillery, which has been released as part of the distillery’s of single cask bottlings. This one was distilled in 1994, and it was allowed to age in a Port pipe for 28 years before being bottled up in 2023 with an outturn of 619 bottles.
Resting in the earthen-floored, traditional dunnage warehouses of The GlenDronach Distillery is an exquisite selection of fine Spanish oak sherry casks, slowing maturing their Highland Single Malt. Dating back as far as 1968, they have a rich selection of barrels, hogsheads, puncheons and butts to choose from. Royal Lochnagar distillery is based on the Abergeldie Estate in Royal Deeside, Scotland, close to the mountain Lochnagar.
The first Lochnagar distillery was burnt down in suspicious circumstances in 1824 and a replacement again burnt down in 1841. In 1845 John Begg built the “new” Lochnagar. The distillery was awarded its Royal Warrant in 1848 when John Begg invited Prince Albert to visit the distillery from the nearby Balmoral Castle, the Queen’s residence in the Highlands. The next day the distillery was visited by Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children.
Today Royal Lochnagar is owned by Diageo, and the distillery produces a relatively small amount of whisky, most of which is used in Johnnie Walker black and blue label.

Mackinlay’s Shackleton Rare Old Highland Malt The Journey 2st Edition (70cl, 47.3%)

The 2007 discovery of whisky left in Antarctica by Sir Ernest Shackleton during his famous expedition in the early 1900s led to Richard ‘The Nose’ Paterson using all his skill and experience to recreate this historic whisky, raising £250,000 for the Antarctic Heritage Trust in the process.
Approached by the charity and Alexandra Shackleton (Ernest’s grand-daughter) to produce a second edition of his blended malt to coincide with Tim Jarvis’ Shackleton Epic (the first authentic re-enactment of Shackleton’s extraordinary Antarctic survival journey of 1916), how could Paterson refuse?
Digging out another rare cask of Glen Mhor (an even older one, this time from 1980), as well as some heavily-peated Dalmore(!), he once again recreated the Shackleton whisky, also using malts from Glenfarclas, Mannochmore, Tamnavulin, Ben Nevis, Aultmore, Fettercairn, Pulteney and Jura.
The resulting masterpiece of blending offers something different, whilst clearly coming from the same lineage as his first lovingly recreated malt. A new and critically-acclaimed interpretation of a truly classic whisky.
