Rum is a distilled alcoholic drink made from sugarcane by products, such as molasses, or directly from sugarcane juice, by a process of fermentation and distillation. The distillate, a clear liquid, is then usually aged in oak barrels.
The majority of the world’s rum production occurs in the Caribbean and Latin America. Rum is also produced in Australia, Portugal, Austria, Canada, Fiji, India, Japan, Mauritius, Nepal, New Zealand, the Philippines, Reunion Island, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Rums are produced in various grades. Light rums are commonly used in cocktails, whereas “golden” and “dark” rums were typically consumed straight or neat, on the rocks, or used for cooking, but are now commonly consumed with mixers. Premium rums are also available, made to be consumed either straight or iced.

Crafted in 2013 to mark the 110th anniversary of the Dominican La Aurora cigar factory, only 3,000 numbered bottles of this rum are produced each year in collaboration with Ron Barceló. The 10-year-old spirit was crafted to bring out the best in premium cigars.
One of the best drinks to pair with a cigar is rum. For this reason, we’ve worked for a long time to achieve a rum that would go perfectly with all the cigars. And we found it. For those who haven’t tried yet, it’s called E. León Jimenes 110 Aniversario. Precisely, we launched it to celebrate our 110thanniversary.
What makes it so special? This is a rum with 10 years of aging, which makes it the perfect match for cigar lovers. Produced at Barceló rum facilities for our company, this is a tasty and complex rum: sweet, spicy, and floral notes that bring out the best notes of premium cigars.
Specifically, this rum remains for the first eight years in virgin American white oak barrels, which provide most of its flavor. For the last two years it’s aged in French oak barrels, which give it homogeneity and fulness. And so, it becomes the “nectar of the gods,” as defined by La Aurora’s master blender, Manuel Inoa.

The Multi Island XO is a blend of rums from West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, which Plantation now owns, and Long Pond and Clarendon Distilleries in Jamaica, both of which they partially own. This allows them more creative control over the whole process than they have with their releases from other distilleries, from the recipe (or “marque”) to the aging. This particular blend is very full bodied, with a hint of that classic Jamaican fruit and funk element, some white pepper and tobacco, and a nice crisp sweetness imparted by the finish in barrels that previously held Coteaux du Layon, a lightly sweet French white wine.

A classic British Navy style rum, Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof rum has rich notes of treacle, toffee, honey and vanilla throughout the palate, alongside oak, cinnamon and ginger. Taking its name from the naval tradition of providing sailors a daily ration of rum, distributed by the Purser – or Pusser. The Pusser would dispel any complaints of watering down the rum by wetting a pinch of gunpowder with the rum and attempting to light it. If the mixture ignited it was “proof” that the rum was strong enough.

I do like that Plantation have included some information about the rum’s ageing process, although there is no info about how the rum was actually created i.e. type of still used. There are some tasting notes, although stating that the nose is “complex, earthy, rum of pure cane juice proudly showing characteristics from ancient noble farms” is not particularly insightful nor useful. The additives are not directly referenced either.

It’s seen three separate periods of ageing, first off with nine and a half years in bourbon casks in Panama before the usual Plantation one year in Ferrand casks in France. Finally, the rum spent another one and a half years in a cask which previously held Arran single malt, before it was bottled at 46.2% ABV.

Distilled from sugar cane in a pot still at Rhum Barbancourt, Plantation’s Haiti 2010 then went through quite the ageing process. Firstly, it spent five years in bourbon casks in Haiti, before being transferred to a cooler continental climate for a further two years of ageing in Ferrand casks. Finally, the rum was treated to a finish Ferrand Cognac 10 Générations casks for one year. It was bottled in 2018 in a limited release of 288 bottles at 40.15% ABV.

A Trinidadian treat from That Boutique-y Rum Company, it’s a cask-strength traditional column still rum from Caroni, which sadly closed its doors back in 2002. Stocks of Caroni’s heavy, aged rum are much sought after these days, and generally left untouched before bottling, however, something different lay in store for this one. Y’see, the folks over at That Boutique-y Whisky Company were putting together a World of Smoke series, which got the Boutique-y Rum gang thinking about how a big, bold 20-year-old rum like this might handle a short spell in a peaty Islay whisky cask! Depth Charge Spiced Rum packs a big, powerful flavour profile, having been made with a fantastic base of Caribbean rum, a selection of tasty spices and generous helpings of lime and mandarin at its core. The name comes from an ancient seafaring tale, where there was once a formidable sailor who encountered a fierce mythological sea monster, which defeated it comprehensively. But then, something appeared to challenge the sea monster – it was Depth Charge! Or at least, some version of that story. You can see what they did there. Trinidad Distillers 2006 Transcontinental Rum Line
Trinidad Distillers is the production facility for the Angostura brand. It was built by the company in 1947 to produce rum for its world-famous bitters, in addition to distilling bulk product for export. The distillery’s original set up was a single Savalle column still, however this was replaced with a five-column still in 1975, following investment from Bacardi who required more bulk rum. Two more of these multi-column stills were added in 1985 and 1999. Some experimentation briefly took place with a Vendome pot still in the early 2000s as well, however this was quickly sold to St Lucia Distillers by their shared parent company at the time, CL Financial. The company was forced to divest much of its rum portfolio following the financial crash in 2007, but retains a majority stake in Angostura after it was bailed out by the local government to prevent what it felt was a national treasure being lost to foreign ownership. Trinidad Distillers remains one of the largest rum distilleries in the Caribbean, producing around 8.5 million litres per year.
A 9 year old was distilled in 2006 and bottled in 2018 by La Maison du Whisky after 7 years tropical and nearly 5 years continental ageing.
La Maison du Whisky, aka LMDW, was founded in 1956 by Georges Benitah and is now one of the largest whisky and rum importers and distributors in France, and known the world over. They opened their first shop in Paris at the legendary 20 Rue d’Anjou in 1968, importing their first Scotch malt whiskies in the 1970s. They are known for their expertise in not only Scotch, but Japanese whisky and rum too, and their collaborative bottlings, as well as their own independent labels like this one, are highly prized.
