The fourth release in the Edition Series, a range of whiskies that focuses on The Macallan’s commitment to wood, the Edition No. 4 was aged in a combination of seven different cask types. These include (deep breath guys); European/American Oak refill butts, European/American Oak refill hogsheads, American Oak first fill Vasyma hogsheads, European Oak first fill Diego Martin Rosado butts, European Oak first fill Jose Y Miguel Martin butts, European Oak first fill Tevasa butts/puncheons and European Oak first fill Tevasa hogsheads.
While the previous three editions had attempted to demonstrate the influence each cask has on taste and aroma, master distiller Nick Savage developed Edition No. 4 to reveal the ‘structure of the whisky’. The inspiration was the construction of the stylish £140m distillery.

This version of the product was bottled between 2006 and 2018 when the 12 year old was rebranded as part of the Sherry Oak line of the Macallan core range.

Dalmore Cigar Malt (70cl, 44%)

Dalmore Cigar Malt was discontinued in mid-2009, causing uproar among all right-thinking, cigar-smoking whisky fans. This dram used to sit above the 12, and below the 15 in terms of both the price-point, and the age-profiles of the whisky that went into the blend, but the new version is a little different.
The whiskies that make up the reworked cigar malt are slightly older, which has pushed up the price somewhat.
But it’s a great whisky, whether you drink with its intended purpose in mind or not. And if you do enjoy cigars, you’ll want to know that the stick that provided the flavour benchmark for pairing is the hefty Partagas Serie D No. 4.

In honour of 125 years of whisky production, Glenfiddich released this limited edition single malt Scotch whisky in 2012. For this expression, the chaps at Glenfiddich have used a combination of peated and unpeated whiskies aged in a large proportion of Spanish ex-Sherry butts, as well as American ex-bourbon casks. It was presented alongside a copper stopper, a leaflet giving some background on the release and a handsome presentation case. What better way to celebrate 125 years of Glenfiddich whisky than with more of it?
The whisky is beautifully presented, with a copper cork, metal box and information leaflet. A frequently-overlooked bottle in Glenlivet’s Cellar Collection, perhaps as it remains one of the youngest of the series (even at 20 years old). This is sterling stuff, nonetheless, described by Jim Murray as ‘sophistication and attitude rolled into one’. With the finish adding nuance rather than dominating the palate, this is a minor classic of the genre.

Here, we have something unique. A limited release of 3,350 bottles of pure mystery and intrigue. The label says “from The Glenlivet Distillery”, and on release that’s all anybody knew. No tasting notes. No cask details. Nothing.
Over the weeks following the release, the mystery was slowly unravelled through a variety of online sensory challenges on The Glenlivet website and Facebook pages. Master Distiller Alan Winchester also interacted with the online community, fielding questions and pointing people in the right direction…
