Undoubtedly anything but a classic whiskey, already on the nose can be seen that you can expect here neither a single malt nor a boring standard blend. As a liquorice friend who appreciates sweet, sticky liquorice liquor almost 😉 as well as a beautiful Irishman or a hefty sweet Scot, I recognize the best of both worlds here. As a whiskey, I would give the Cutty Sark Black no 30 points, but he is too little “pure”, too little deep, not enough aromatic. As an alcoholic liquorice drink, however, the 77 points that I simply give out here are more than just earned.

The Multi Island XO is a blend of rums from West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, which Plantation now owns, and Long Pond and Clarendon Distilleries in Jamaica, both of which they partially own. This allows them more creative control over the whole process than they have with their releases from other distilleries, from the recipe (or “marque”) to the aging. This particular blend is very full bodied, with a hint of that classic Jamaican fruit and funk element, some white pepper and tobacco, and a nice crisp sweetness imparted by the finish in barrels that previously held Coteaux du Layon, a lightly sweet French white wine.

Speyside malts were matured in Sherry-seasoned, European oak casks to craft Famous Grouse Sherry Cask Finish. The blend has been in development for two years.
Sanele Gwala, global senior brand manager at The Famous Grouse, explained: “This new, revived blend is finished in Sherry casks and butts seasoned in the region of Jerez, Spain. The aim was to create a blend that is slightly sweeter but still in keeping with the smooth and distinct DNA of classic Grouse.
“Once the blend is in its final stages of maturation, which involves the meticulous combination of hand selected malt and grain whiskies, The Famous Grouse master blender does not stop there; the full blend is married in ex-Sherry casks to further enhance their sweet, rich, and smooth characters.
“The Sherry Cask Finish is a decadent blend of festive flavours including chocolate, almonds, dried fruits, and sweet spices.”
The packaging pays tribute to the Spanish female capercaillie bird, part of the grouse family. This particular bird was chosen for its link to the product’s Spanish Sherry heritage, as well as its orange and red plumage, which ‘echoes the deep amber’ of the liquid.

This special edition blend from Johnnie Walker is made with mixing in mind. It’s sweeter than you might expect from the brand, with prominent toffee and fruit notes that bring the best from lemonade, cola and ginger. For the summer of 2020, Johnnie Walker have launched a brighter, sweeter whisky called Johnnie Blonde Blended Scotch Whisky. According to Johnnie Walker, this is one of the most versatile whiskies they’ve ever made. With this whisky, Johnnie Walker have taken bright wheat whiskies which have been matured in sweet American oak. This gives flavours of toffee and caramel, before being brought together with fresher, fruity malt flavours from the whole of Scotland. On the nose the vanilla notes come through strongly, along with toffee and berry aromas. On the palate the sweetness continues, again with sweetened vanilla, apples, and a light spiciness and caramel aromas. The finish on this whisy is smooth, and very light. Perfect Serve. This is a whisky which was made to be versatile, and works in the mix with soda, lemonade, cola or ginger mixers. Try it with a citrus soda, such as Fever-Tree Sicilian Lemonade and you’ll note the sweet, fruity crispness from the whisky comes forward. A classic British Navy style rum, Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof rum has rich notes of treacle, toffee, honey and vanilla throughout the palate, alongside oak, cinnamon and ginger. Taking its name from the naval tradition of providing sailors a daily ration of rum, distributed by the Purser – or Pusser. The Pusser would dispel any complaints of watering down the rum by wetting a pinch of gunpowder with the rum and attempting to light it. If the mixture ignited it was “proof” that the rum was strong enough.

In September, we reported on the new partnership between whiskey brand Jack Daniel’s and Formula 1 team McLaren Racing. And now the first quaffable example of this relationship has arrived in the form of a new special limited-edition bottle with a design that is both recognizable and new.
The whiskey inside the new Jack Daniel’s McLaren Racing limited-edition bottle is the same Old No. 7 you know and love—charcoal mellowed Tennessee whiskey with a mashbill of 80 percent corn, 8 percent rye, and 12 percent malted barley, bottled at the standard 80 proof. But the new label and box are meant to honor the founders of both companies—Jack Daniel’s himself and Bruce McLaren. The Jack Daniel’s name was officially registered with the government back in 1866, while McLaren Racing was founded nearly a century later in 1963. Jack has become one of the biggest whiskey brands in the entire world, while McLaren was won many races, including 20 Formula 1 World Championships.
