Created at the Bruichladdich distillery, this superb Islay gin was distilled in the ‘ugly betty’ still described as “an oversized upside-down dustbin made of copper” by Tom Morton. Perhaps the best looking packaging we’ve ever seen for a gin – it’s not all style and no substance either. This is a world-class gin, at a proper ABV.
A huge 31 botanicals go into The Botanist, including some native to Islay. The full list of botanicals is as follows: angelica root, apple mint, birch leaves, bog myrtle leaves, cassia bark, chamomile, cinnamon bark, coriander seed, creeping thistle flowers, elder flowers, gorse flowers, heather flowers, hawthorn flowers, juniper berries, lady’s bedstraw flowers, lemon balm, lemon peel, liquorice root, meadow sweet, orange peel, oris root, peppermint leaves, mugwort leaves, red clover flowers, tansy, thyme leaves, water mint leaves, white clover, wood sage leaves. With the hand-crafted bottle, complete with cork stopper and an old fashioned map on the label, Elephant Dry Gin certainly captures the spirit of exploration.
Also, you know how baby oil isn’t made of babies? Elephant Dry Gin isn’t made of elephants either. In fact, it’s actually helping them survive, as 15% of Elephant Gin’s profits go to two African elephant foundations (Big Life and Space for Elephants) to support rangers who protect against poachers and run education projects in local communities. Taking Citadelle gin, the distillers took this unusual spirit to Cognac Ferrand’s Cellar Master, who aged the gin in small quantities in Château de Bonbonnet’s cellars in a Solera system, a maturation method usually seen in Sherry production (though has been becoming rather popular in the rum world too). Very impressive stuff – we recommend serving it over ice to get the fully flavour profile which the maturation has imparted.

A more recent addition to the Beefeater range. When creating Beefeater 24, Desmond Payne knew he had to come up with something totally different for his selection of botanicals. He used tea! The 12 ingredients used are Japanese Sencha Tea, Chinese green tea and then Seville orange peel, grapefruit peel, lemon peel, juniper, coriander seed, liquorice, angelica root, almond and orris root. It is called Beefeater 24 because the botanicals are steeped in the spirit for a full 24 hours. The result is a fragrant gin with good sweetness.

Southwestern Distillery produce small batches of their artisan Tarquin’s Gin using their flame-fired copper pot still called Tamara, goddess of the Tamar. It’s then bottled by hand and sent off into the world, to spread the news that Cornwall is producing some fabulous gin.

Daffys Small Batch Premium Gin (70cl, 43.4%)

Daffy’s Small Batch Premium Gin is made with grain spirit from northern France, which is then distilled using a copper pot still. The Scottish distillers use a selection of eight botanicals for Daffy’s Gin, including juniper, Lebanese mint, coriander, angelica root, Spanish lemon and orange peels, cassia bark and orris root. It has been bottled at a very specific 43.4% ABV, as the distillers believe this to be the perfect strength for their expression – not excessively punchy, but with enough power behind it for balance and flavour.
The bottle design, incidentally, is the work of Robert McGinnis, the American artist who made film posters for various James Bond and Matt Helm films as well as Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Barbarella!

Initially made in a 60-litre still named Wee Mary, Tobermory Gin has a larger dedicated gin still in a stillhouse separate from the existing whisky-producing space.
