The Château La Nerthe estate is one of the most venerable wineries of the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation and with its 222 acres of vineyards one of the largest estates in this region. The estate’s history dates back to the 14th century. From the beginning, the Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape has been synonymous with outstanding wines from the Côtes du Rhône region.

This also applies to the excellent 2020 vintage. The fully ripe grapes were harvested by hand so that they could preserve their balance and full aromas. The pressing occurred carefully and under constant control. The fermentation was also meticulously carried out at low temperatures in order to maintain the aromas.

The Roussanne grapes were aged in oak casks, of which one third were new barrels. The La Nerthe 2020 is a cuvée consisting of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc, and was produced on a purely organic basis. The wine matured for 9 months, remaining in contact with the yeast. It was blended only a short time before bottling.

The Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 is a pale lemon in colour. On the nose, it offers aromas of stone fruit (peach, apricot) and white flowers. It is wonderfully complex on the palate, showing notes of citrus fruit (lime) and exotic fruit (pineapple, mango), with a good balance between acidity and richness. The wine is elegant, with an expressive finish that offers long-lasting, spicy and mineral notes.

The Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 is a wonderful and harmonious accompaniment to fish with butter sauce, seafood and poultry.

The 2021 La Louvière is quite intense on the precise nose of blackberry, wild strawberry, cedar and tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, fresh and vibrant, leading to an elegant finish. A success in a difficult vintage. 91-93 Neal Martin.

Lovely perfumed berry nose. Juicy and bright on the palate, this has a sense of joy to it and although the tannins come in and dominate the palate in terms of chewy texture the fruit has persistence and determination giving slightly sour cherry, strawberry and tangy raspberry the whole way through. I love the upfront nature here, the terroir on show in the glass, and the chalky tannins provide the support which will soften over time. Skilled winemaking on show. 92 Geogina Hindle, Decanter.

The epitome of cool blue friuit, on the border of full ripeness, where there is elegance and balance, expertly handled extraction, grilled almond and gunsmoke coming in under the fruit. This is a success, a lean, carefully constructed wine. 91 Jane Anson.

The style of a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion by Château La Gaffelière

The estate
Located at the southern entrance to the village of Saint-Emilion, the Premier Grand Cru Classé B of Saint-Émilion Château La Gaffelière boasts ancient origins. Some mosaics excavated at the site attest to the presence of vines at the estate in the Gallo-Roman period. Owned by the Malet Roquefort family for over three centuries and located in the “golden triangle,” between the hills of Châteaux Pavie and Ausone, Château La Gaffelière embodies the excellence of Saint-Emilion fine wines.

The vineyard
The Château La Gaffelière vineyard covers 38 hectares, including 22 classified Premier Grand Cru Classé. This vineyard is located in 3 different areas. Here we find the famous limestone plateau, an outcropping of clayey “Molasses from Fronsadais” soil and deep carbonate sand. The Château La Gaffelière vineyard is cultivated with sustainable agriculture with minimal intervention.

The vintage
The mild winter led to bud-burst in late March. Flowering took place under great conditions and July was very hot. A thunderstorm alleviated the vines of water stress, allowing them to resist the heat throughout the summer and deliver grapes at the perfect stage of ripeness in time for the harvest.

The winemaking
Manual harvest. Merlot from September 18 to October 8. Cabernet Franc from September 30 to October 11. After harvest, grapes were placed in a cold room for 12 hours. Optical sorting. Plot-by-plot vinification in thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks filled by means of gravity and without the use of sulphur. Alcoholic fermentation with pump-overs and punch-downs. Malolactic fermentation in vats (75%) and barrels (25%). Maceration for 30 days for Merlot and 32 days for Cabernet Franc.

The ageing
14 to 16 months of ageing in barrels, 60% of which are of new French oak. Racking “a l’esquive.”

The first few months of the year were characterised by high rainfall. Flowering went well, during an opportune, clement window of opportunity, confirming our initial hopes spurred by bud break in April. Fortunately, we avoided the hailstorms in May, which hit some of the vineyards on the right bank. Mild spring temperatures, coupled with high levels of humidity, placed us under serious pressure. The impending threat of mildew caused us to increase our vigilance in the vines. The return of very sunny weather gave hope to our teams, who had not relinquished their efforts to protect the vines, and adhering to environmentally- conscious protocols.

Hot and sunny, summer boosted ripening in the grapes. Significant water reserves accumulated at the start of the year protected the vines from excessive stress. We approached the relatively early harvests in a total state of calm, picking by hand and tailoring our schedules to individual rows. The grapes were exceptional in terms of ripeness and quality. We rolled out densimetric sorting across the vineyard, a practice introduced in 2016. This is followed by a final sort by hand to eliminate the last remaining MOG.

Château des Laurets and its adjoining land covers two appellations; Puisseguin and Montagne. Barons is the top wine of the property, and cultivates a selection of plots, harvested and sorted by hand, to produce a blend with all the care that goes into the finest wines. After acquiring Château des Laurets in 2003, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild wanted to highlight the unique character of this estate by producing a limited vintage from a selection of the best Merlot plots. A niche wine, produced only in the best years, Château des Laurets Baron bears the mark of the great Saint‑Emilion wines. The extremely fresh nose expresses intense black fruit. Hints of cedar mingle with the aroma of Morello cherries. The elegant palate possesses a bold character with sophisticated velvety tannins and notes of liquorice. The finish is long and persistent. While the freshness of this young wine is very pleasant, it also promises an excellent cellaring potential.

Cesari Recioto Della Valpolicella Classico DOC 50cl, 13%

The predecessor of Amarone, Recioto is the appellation’s signature dessert wine produced using a similar method. Flavors of raisined fruit, particularly cherries, are highly concentrated. Vanilla notes add structure to this powerful, rich red. The tannins are ripe and sweet rounding out the finish. Dried clusters are vinified in stainless steel and aged 18 months in French oak barrels. Unlike its predecessor, Recioto’s fermentation is halted, thus allowing it to retain a higher concentration of residual sugar.
