Here, we have something unique. A limited release of 3,350 bottles of pure mystery and intrigue. The label says “from The Glenlivet Distillery”, and on release that’s all anybody knew. No tasting notes. No cask details. Nothing.
Over the weeks following the release, the mystery was slowly unravelled through a variety of online sensory challenges on The Glenlivet website and Facebook pages. Master Distiller Alan Winchester also interacted with the online community, fielding questions and pointing people in the right direction…

The fourth release in the Glenlivet mystery range where no cask information or tasting notes are given. Consumers have to try and solve the puzzle by guessing tasting notes in the form of a crossword. The Enigma was exclusive to the US market.
The Glenlivet is launching a fourth edition in its mystery series of whiskies, released without any information aside from its abv.
The Glenlivet Enigma is a single malt Scotch whisky presented in a matte black bottle at 60.6% abv.
All other information is kept a secret, however buyers can ‘unlock’ tasting cues by solving a digital crossword puzzle.
The Glenlivet Enigma is the fourth expression in the Speyside distillery’s mystery series.
The first, Alpha, was revealed in 2013, and followed by Cipher in 2016 and Code in 2018.
The Glenlivet Enigma will be a US exclusive, available to purchase from 10 July
‘By challenging consumers to guess the mystery liquid’s taste, feel and finish – and then put that to the test with an interactive digital crossword puzzle – Enigma offers a vehicle for us to engage with a variety of consumers in a way that’s reimagining Scotch whisky tropes.’
More information about The Glenlivet Enigma’s tasting notes, distilling and ageing processes will be revealed at the end of 2019.

Part of the Glenlivet’s Classic Golf Courses of Scotland series, this Carnoustie edition was released sometime in the 1990s. It includes a bottle of 12 year old Glenlivet single malt Scotch whisky and a golf-tastic presentation tin which features a picture of the legendary Carnoustie golf course.
Glenlivet produced a range of presentation boxes for Scottish golf courses in the 1980s-90s. Saint Andrews, Muirfield, Turnberry, Royal Dornoch, Troon and Carnoustie were all featured.
