That Boutique-y Whisky Company bottles limited edition single malts, single grains and bourbons from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blended malts and blends. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels that feature prominent figures from the whisky industry, tales from the histories of certain distilleries or even (in the case of their Aultmores) a Velociraptor fighting a shark! There are usually plenty of other little details for you to find too…

From April 2016 onwards these whiskies will be bottled with age statements and That Boutique-y Whisky Company have been very clear about the reasons behind this move, still believing that flavour and overall quality are more important than age. It’s partly been driven by the interest of whisky fans, but is also part of their wholehearted support for the campaign for Scotch whisky transparency that John Glaser of Compass Box launched earlier that year. They’ve committed not only to introducing age statements (which tell you the age of the youngest component), but to list the breakdown of the various whiskies that make up each bottling as soon as the campaign is successful and EU legislation allows it.

The Glen Garioch distillery may well be Scotland’s first licensed distillery. Varying dates are given as to the founding of the distillery, but all are predated by an article in the Aberdeen Journal on the 1st December 1785, which announced the first distillation of spirit at the site. This is OLD SCHOOL Glen Garioch, distilled in 1988, from when the distillery was floor malting their own malt, and using Highland peat. Bottled by That Boutique-y Whisky Company for its Cinema Series.

Glenlossie 26 Year Old That Boutique-y Whisky Company Batch #9 50cl

Glenlossie became part of DCL (now Diageo) in 1919, who made it part of their Haig stable in the 1930s. The distillery has always been hugely important to the Diageo blends, and excepting the staff-only Manager’s Dram, the Flora & Fauna is the only distillery bottling, and one of the few from the series still in production. Independent bottlings are more common, but are still decidedly rare.

Launched in 2012, That Boutique-y Whisky Company is an independent bottler and subsidiary of the Atom Group in Kent, England. Their releases are notable for their use of comic book style graphic labels, often with irreverent industry jokes concealed within them. Their catalogue is hugely expansive, covering whiskies from all over the world, and they are now joined by sister companies who bottle Gin and Rum.

Batch #9 resulted in 489 bottles.

Here we’ve got a 31 year old single grain from the Strathclyde Distillery, independently bottled up by That Boutique-y Whisky Company. There’s… There’s a lot of info on this label. However, there’s also line by a well-known philosopher at the bottle which sums it all up rather nicely. How handy!

Emperor’s Way 4 Year Old That Boutique-y Whisky Company (50cl, 54.4%)

This single malt hails from the Hammerschmiede distillery in Germany. Boutique-y Whisky regulars will be familiar with the distillery’s Elsburn single malt, but here we have something different – Emperor’s Way is the name given to its peated, smoky expressions! Rather unusually, local German peat was used during malting, and the whisky was matured in an extremely rare first-fill Japanese mizunara oak cask. A cracking find from That Boutique-y Whisky Company, and just the thing to join its World of Smoke collection.

Batch 1 is a release of 477 bottles.
