Speyside single malts are single malt Scotch whiskies, distilled in Strathspey, the area around the River Spey in Moray and Badenoch and Strathspey, in northeastern Scotland.
The two best-selling single malt whiskies in the world, The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, come from Speyside. Strathspey has the greatest number of distilleries of any of the whisky producing areas of Scotland. Dufftown alone has six working distilleries with an annual capacity of 40.4m litres of spirit.
Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail is a tourism initiative featuring eight Speyside distilleries and the Speyside Cooperage. Speyside also hosts an annual whisky festival known as “Spirit of Speyside”.
Speyside whiskies can generally be classified as light and grassy (e.g. Glenlivet) or rich and sweet (e.g. Macallan).

The Macallan Quest range (originally released for the Travel Retail market) features four expressions showing off the many, many miles travelled to sources the casks to mature the Speyside whisky. The Lumina expression is made with whisky aged in sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks, as well as hogsheads. While sherry does get a good look-in with this one, it’s a much more vanilla and toffee-focussed dram.

The Nàdurra range uses traditional 19th-century production methods to create inventive and original whiskies. This version is matured in first-fill Oloroso sherry oak casks from the Spanish region of Perez. The sherry-soaked wood introduces the rich, sultry flavours of dried fruit and warm spice. Nàdurra Oloroso, like all expressions in the range, is bottled and released in small batches, and, unlike most modern whiskies, is non-chill filtered so has all the body you would expect from a whisky that has been drawn straight from the cask. It’s a bright, vivacious gold liquid, with aromas of dried fruit and spice. To drink, it’s smooth and creamy with chocolate and marmalade. This is a divine example of what happens when you bring together Spanish passion and Speyside tradition. This whisky is all about using traditions to achieve modern brilliance. Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength 1L, 60%

Gelenfarclas 105 Cask Strength doesn’t carry an age statement, but there are any suggestions that it is matured for 8-10 years in a combination of both ex-sherry an ex-bourbon barrels. Drying and rich it makes for a superb dram, one the Malt Maniacs rated as the best „Bang for your buck“ whisky in 2004. It is an excellent whisky with aromas of spices, citrus fruits and oloroso sherry. It introduces a world of flavours and make a fiery and strong experience.
Glenfarclas 105 is a superb cask strength whisky, with a history that can be traced to 1968. When the original incarnation was released that year, Glenfarclas became the first distillery to release a barrel proof single malt whisky.
The bottling was eventually re-named to 105, referring to its alcohol content in British Proof, which equates now to 60% ABV.
The 105 doesn’t carry an age statement presently, making it rare among Glenfarclas bottlings. Although, there are suggestions that it is matured for 8-10 years in a combination of both ex-sherry and ex-bourbon barrels.
Drying, assertive and richly spiced, the 105 makes for a superb dram, one the Malt Maniacs rated as the best “Bang for your buck” whisky in 2004. Add a drop of water if you please to explore its depth – and don’t be put off by that ABV, there’s plenty of flavour here to enjoy.

Glenfiddich 125th Anniversary Edition (70cl, 43%)

In honour of 125 years of whisky production, Glenfiddich released this limited edition single malt Scotch whisky in 2012. For this expression, the chaps at Glenfiddich have used a combination of peated and unpeated whiskies aged in a large proportion of Spanish ex-Sherry butts, as well as American ex-bourbon casks. It was presented alongside a copper stopper, a leaflet giving some background on the release and a handsome presentation case. What better way to celebrate 125 years of Glenfiddich whisky than with more of it?
The whisky is beautifully presented, with a copper cork, metal box and information leaflet. A peated Glenfiddich is not something you see everyday, and in the 5 years since this whisky was released, it has become increasingly rare, so “Fiddich fans should move fast if they want to sample this tremendous dram!

Whisky maker Steven Bremner used his passions for blending malts and mixing house music as his inspiration for the release.
He said: ‘Music has inspired many aspects of my life, both creatively and practically, as has whisky, so the creation of Concept Number 2 allowed me to look at my two passions through a different lens.

The third release in The Macallan’s wood-focused Edition series saw master perfumer Roja Dove and master whisky maker Bob Dalgarno create a whisky using their very particular sets of skills. Dove pinned down the flavour profile for Edition No. 3 by using the same formula he would for a perfume: pinpointing complementary aromas, and balancing these with a “counterpoint” note. The resulting liquid is a combination of six American and European oak casks, with deliciously sweet, floral notes up front.

Far in the North of Westeros lies the home of House Stark, a noble family whose lords served as King in the North for generations. A proud and loyal family, the Starks were true to those they swore allegiance to – First House Targaryen and later House Baratheon. However, every noble family has a vulnerable side, and the Starks are no different. Living in the North they are often caught with a warning passing their lips: Winter is coming. Like House Stark, Dalwhinnie distillery are northerners through and through. One of the highest and coldest distilleries in Scotland, the extreme weather and cold temperatures experienced at Dalwhinnie are reflected in the fact that this single malt is best served chilled, or over ice, to highlight its signature honey and spice characteristics.
Aged in ex-bourbon casks, this light gold single malt gently opens to flavours of honeyed figs and delicious malt balls, finishing with rich fruitcake sweetness. A collaboration with renowned pastry chef Jordi Roca of three Michelin star restaurant El Celler de Can Roca, this release brings the worlds of chocolate and whisky to life. To create the first limited edition whisky in a new annual release series, The Macallan Whisky Maker Polly Logan embarked on a unique journey to Girona, Spain, where she immersed herself in the world of chocolate, exploring the chocolate-making process and uncovering the distinctive flavour profiles at Casa Cacao.
Polly worked with Jordi Roca, owner of the famed chocolate boutique and hotel, Casa Cacao and the youngest of the acclaimed Roca brothers. As part of the exploration, she also spent time with master chocolatier of Casa Cacao, Damien Allsop.
In homage to its chocolate influence, The Macallan Harmony Collection Rich Cacao is presented in a 100% recyclable gift box, made using discarded husks from cacao pods.
A by-product in the chocolate-making process, these husks would have been sent to landfill or destroyed but have now been reborn with a renewed purpose.
