It was bottled at 46% ABV, without chill filtration, and with no added colouring.

A frankly monstrous whisky from blenders and bottlers Fox Fitzgerald, this is Peat’s Beast at a whopping 54.1% ABV. Peat’s Beast is a single malt from a mystery Islay distillery, adding further intrigue to this delicious and smoky whisky. The complexity in this dram has been kicked up a notch, not just by its strength, but by its finishing period in Pedro Ximinez Sherry casks. Pedro Ximinez is the sweetest style of sherry, and here it marries perfectly with the robust smoky flavours of this whisky. The nose brings huge smoky aromas, with a dense grassy and earthy peat, accompanied by a sherried fruit, and some thick malty notes. The palate is hot and thick, with a buttery caramel flavour accompanied by peat smoke and succulent stone fruit: plums and cherries. The finish is smoky and medium in length with a little toasted woodspice. This whisky is non-chill-filtered, so the drinker gets to enjoy all the texture and flavour of the spirit at its best.

More awesomeness here from Ardnamurchan! You might be wondering what happened with the name on this one, did the folks at Ardnamurchan forget to add all the usual numbers to the end? Perhaps we got distracted mid-sentence by a colourful bird flying past, or a robot vacuum cleaner buzzing around our feet? The answer is simple, this is no mistake! Going forward, Ardnamurchan’s AD/ bottlings will no longer have all those confusing digits. The whisky remains unchanged though, following its traditional combination of 50% peated and 50% unpeated malt, matured in a combination of 65% bourbon and 35% sherry casks.
A fruity, sweet single malt from Ardnamurchan distillery, AD was made with a combination of peated and un-peated malt and matured in both ex-bourbon casks and ex-sherry casks. Aromas of toasted marshmallows, pebble beaches, orange oil and popcorn fill the nose, complemented by notes of melted chocolate, marshmallow, lime cordial, sea salt, bitter orange, dark chocolate and salted popcorn throughout the palate.

Benriach’s Smoky Quarter Cask celebrates the distillery’s use of peat, which began in the 1970s, harking back to whisky production of old, while breaking the conventional style of whisky from the Speyside region. The use of wood-rich Highland peat results in a sweet, smoky profile, and this expression is crafted with a balance of Benriach’s peated and unpeated spirit. Initially matured in bourbon barrels, the whisky is then transferred to bespoke quarter casks. Peat and sherry is a great combo, though sometimes it can be a bit like a shouting match between a foghorn and a washing machine full of pots and pans. Thankfully, this one shows off a welcome harmony between the two. It’s a marvellous variation of Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire, featuring the same smoky 10 year old Islay single malt, though instead of just 25% of it being finished in sherry casks, the entirety of the whisky was finished in them. The powerfully peaty notes at its core are mellowed by just enough sherry sweetness, making for a superbly well-balanced flavour profile.

Yet, those long copper coiled tubes housed in cold water in a large vat are sadly too rare these days as many favoured more modern and efficient condensers. They’re the vinyl of the whisky world.
This expression takes some beautiful whisky that was at least ten years old from a distillery in Speyside that uses wormtubs (that we can’t name, but we think there will be a few among you who can work it out), reracked into first-fill sherry casks before bottling. The Meikle Tòir range (meaning ‘big pursuit’ and pronounced mee-kuhl tor) comprises peated whisky made at GlenAllachie Distillery with guidance from legendary master distiller Billy Walker. The Original is a single malt made with mainland peat from St. Fergus, a sweeter, grassier variety than found on the coast. The barley was peated to 35ppm and then the whisky was aged in a combination of first-fill bourbon barrels, American virgin oak casks, and rye barrels. It was bottled at 50% ABV without chill-filtration or additional colouring.
