Plantation Haiti XO (70cl, 41%)

As with all Plantation rums, this has the usual distinctive netting wrapped around the bottles – this is great from a branding/marketing point of view. I do like that Plantation have included some information about the rum’s ageing process, although there is no info about how the rum was actually created i.e. type of still used. There are some tasting notes, although stating that the nose is “complex, earthy, rum of pure cane juice proudly showing characteristics from ancient noble farms” is not particularly insightful nor useful. The additives are not directly referenced either.

Plantation Isle of Fiji (70cl, 40%)

This colourful bottling is Plantation’s homage to the Fiji Islands. Distilled from Fijian molasses, it’s initially aged for around three years in the tropical climate in bourbon casks, before it’s sent over to France for a secondary maturation in French oak for a year. A spicy, creamy and tropical affair, and a sure fire way to taste a sense of place! An excellent sipper, and it certainly stands up to being used in all sorts of cocktails. Plus, look at that iguana on the label! What a cheerful little fellow!

Plantation Multi Island XO Sample (2cl, 40%)

The Multi Island XO is a blend of rums from West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, which Plantation now owns, and Long Pond and Clarendon Distilleries in Jamaica, both of which they partially own. This allows them more creative control over the whole process than they have with their releases from other distilleries, from the recipe (or “marque”) to the aging. This particular blend is very full bodied, with a hint of that classic Jamaican fruit and funk element, some white pepper and tobacco, and a nice crisp sweetness imparted by the finish in barrels that previously held Coteaux du Layon, a lightly sweet French white wine.

Plantation Original Dark Double Aged (1L, 40%)

The Original Dark expression from Plantation has had a little bit of a revamp! It’s now made with aged rum from Trinidad and Jamaica, which then blended together and aged further in Cognac casks, which should impart some fruity richness to the expression…

Here we have the third instalment in Planation’s 2018 Single Cask Collection, Panama 12 Year Old. It’s seen three separate periods of ageing, first off with nine and a half years in bourbon casks in Panama before the usual Plantation one year in Ferrand casks in France. Finally, the rum spent another one and a half years in a cask which previously held Arran single malt, before it was bottled at 46.2% ABV.

Distilled in a four column still in 2004 at the Alcoholes Del Istmo Distillery, this rum is first aged in Panama for 11 years, lending it violet scents with structure and depth, and then raised 2 additional years in Ferrand casks in France, which lend spicy and woody notes that infuse slightly tannic undertones.

One of our favorite rum brands, this ridiculously easy to drink rum from Panama was selected for Cask by our spirits buyer. Having spent 6 years in Bourbon barrels, one year in cognac barrels, and a final year in a Cabreuva cask (Brazilian native wood), this rum has layer upon layer of flavor to explore. Diplomatico fans take note.
