A delicious blended whisky, we love this peaty version of Famous Grouse. Jim Murray awarded it 94 points in the Whisky Bible. The Black Grouse, or Tetrao tetrix, is a declining species in Europe.
Speyside malts were matured in Sherry-seasoned, European oak casks to craft Famous Grouse Sherry Cask Finish. The blend has been in development for two years.
Sanele Gwala, global senior brand manager at The Famous Grouse, explained: “This new, revived blend is finished in Sherry casks and butts seasoned in the region of Jerez, Spain. The aim was to create a blend that is slightly sweeter but still in keeping with the smooth and distinct DNA of classic Grouse.
“Once the blend is in its final stages of maturation, which involves the meticulous combination of hand selected malt and grain whiskies, The Famous Grouse master blender does not stop there; the full blend is married in ex-Sherry casks to further enhance their sweet, rich, and smooth characters.
“The Sherry Cask Finish is a decadent blend of festive flavours including chocolate, almonds, dried fruits, and sweet spices.”
The packaging pays tribute to the Spanish female capercaillie bird, part of the grouse family. This particular bird was chosen for its link to the product’s Spanish Sherry heritage, as well as its orange and red plumage, which ‘echoes the deep amber’ of the liquid.
The Famous Grouse Sherry Cask Finish has aromas of cocoa, sherry, cherries and light oak. Sweet on the tongue by the Sherry tones, herbs and some fruit. The aftertaste is full of flavor with notes of chocolate and spices.

The Famous Grouse 16 year-old double matured special edition is a sublime blend of eight different whiskies. Gently married over time and matured twice to ensure a depth of flavour, the blend is expertly finished in a combination of first fill Spanish sherry casks and first fill American Bourbon casks. It is presented in a signed collector’s pack, designed by artist Vic Lee. An award-winning illustrator and renowned storyteller, his style focuses on the delightful juxtapositions between tradition and modernity.
Just like in the 15 Years that I reviewed earlier I find a peculiar Aroma in the 12 Years that I can’t quite place. It’s something that reminds me of Cooked Vegetables with a little added Sulphur but that doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it. Anyway, it’s clear that there are some Refill Macallan Ex-Sherry casks in the mix. The rest is mostly Glenrothes I think while it’s very hard or even almost impossible to detect Highland Park. Is there the faintest puff of Smoke in the background? It could be but I’m not gonna put a lot of money on that. On the Nose, this Famous Grouse has Sweet notes but there’s a slightly Sour touch to it as well. I find Toasted Barley, Toast with a mix of Butter and Margarine, light Honey, Toffee, Caramel, Hay, Dried Apricot, Apples, Plums, Nuts, light Vanilla, Orange, Nougat and hints of Espresso and Milk Chocolate. The Alcohol is not fully integrated. At this price level, it’s not at all bad but objectively speaking there’s not too much of interest going on.
The Famous Grouse Gold Reserve 12yo is a blend of single malt whiskies including The Macallan and Highland Park and also grain whisky. The Gold Reserve expression has the acccolade The Silk of Scotland because of it’s silky smooth finish. There are hints of ripe peach on the nose and palate.

Created to mark 70 years since Don Julio Gonzalez first started making Tequila, Don Julio 70 Anejo has been aged in American white oak bourbon casks for 18 months, before undergoing charcoal filtration. The result is a sweet, citrus forward Tequila, striking a balance between rich notes of chocolate, butterscotch and vanilla, and youthful lemon, toasted almonds, black pepper and smoky agave.
The Top Cuvée from Veteran Producer Don Julio, named in honour of founder Don Julio Gonzalez-Frausto Estrada, who first distilled Tequila when he was just 17 years old in 1942. This tasty Mexican spirit is treated to 30 months in American white oak before it’s bottled.
The “Devil’s Blood” is actually a cocktail. It enjoys a lot of popularity especially at times like Halloween. Classically mixed with ingredients like black vodka, triple sec, cherry or cranberry juice, it sometimes brings back memories of a simple Cosmo. Now you can also enjoy the gruesome drink at home. A proud and loyal family, the Starks were true to those they swore allegiance to – First House Targaryen and later House Baratheon. However, every noble family has a vulnerable side, and the Starks are no different. Living in the North they are often caught with a warning passing their lips: Winter is coming. Like House Stark, Dalwhinnie distillery are northerners through and through. One of the highest and coldest distilleries in Scotland, the extreme weather and cold temperatures experienced at Dalwhinnie are reflected in the fact that this single malt is best served chilled, or over ice, to highlight its signature honey and spice characteristics.
Aged in ex-bourbon casks, this light gold single malt gently opens to flavours of honeyed figs and delicious malt balls, finishing with rich fruitcake sweetness. Like House Stark, Dalwhinnie Winter’s Frost is loyal to the flavour profile that the distillery is known for, and not only survives the cold of winter, but uses it to its advantage.
An exceptional single malt matured in three equally exceptional casks. Using a three cask maturation, The Dalmore The Trio is a captivating marriage of rare and exceptional casks. The liquid is initially matured in American white oak ex-bourbon casks. This gives its first base of soft vanilla and honey notes. Indeed, this dram is part of a mini series of three whiskies from the Highland distillery. Each expression in this series showcases Dalmore’s spirit in an increasing number of cask finishes, with the Trio being finished in three casks, the Quartet in four, and the Quintet in five.
Dalmore Quintet has been finished in rare muscatel casks, Malmsey Madeira barrels, 30 year old matusalem sherry casks, 10 year old port casks and Cabernet Sauvignon casks from Bordeaux.
The result is an exceedingly rich and complex whisky, which serves up notes of pineapple, mango, bananas, maple syrup, espresso, dark chocolate, rich dried fruits, plums, marmalade, white grapes, malt, vanilla custard, rancio, old oak and leather.

This dram used to sit above the 12, and below the 15 in terms of both the price-point, and the age-profiles of the whisky that went into the blend, but the new version is a little different.

But it’s a great whisky, whether you drink with its intended purpose in mind or not. And if you do enjoy cigars, you’ll want to know that the stick that provided the flavour benchmark for pairing is the hefty Partagas Serie D No. 4.

The Dalmore 45 has been hand crafted by Master Distiller Richard Paterson who has used some of the distillery’s rarest aged liquids to create what Richard himself has described as ‘flawless perfection’.
Initially matured in American white oak ex-bourbon casks, the liquid has then been transferred into two different Vintage Graham’s Port Colheita pipes dating from 1961 and 1963 to create layers of flavour, which are indulgent, smooth and complex.
For its final flourish the whisky was then married together in first fill American white oak ex-bourbon casks providing The Dalmore 45 with a truly unrivalled finish. The Dalmore’s use of multiple casks is a fitting example of the distillery’s commitment to exquisite cask curation, which focuses on sourcing and utilising only the best casks from the world’s finest bodegas and wineries.
Purposefully retained at 40% ABV, The Dalmore 45 features exquisite flavours of red berries, soft liquorice, crushed hazelnuts, bitter chocolate and Manuka honey. This is followed by the sweet flavours of sticky toffee pudding, Bramley apples and juicy dates to finish.
Richard Paterson commented: “By personally selecting the very finest American white oak ex-bourbon casks and Port Colheita Pipes from 1961 and 1963, I have been able to create a truly unique expression which is indulgent and smooth with a vibrant and lively flavour profile. The 2017 release of Dalmore 40 Year Old was aged in bourbon casks for around 30 years, then aged in oloroso-sherry butts for a further seven before being finished in first-fill bourbon barrels. The result is a whisky with notes of gingerbread, maple syrup, honey and brioche.

As a distillery that has a history of using an intricate selection of maturing methods, the 25 Year Old continues that tradition. First, it matured in American white oak cask. After that, it was hand-divided into 25 year old Palomino Fino sherry butts and 1980s first-fill bourbon casks. A 2003 single malt from the second release in the annual Dalmore Vintages series, combining the very finest casks from 2003 to create a rich, sweet limited-edition whisky. Beginning its journey in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, it was then transferred into a combination of Rivesaltes sweet wine casks, Matusalem and Amoroso sherry casks, and bourbon barrels, before being married together and bottled in 2022. Aromas of Manuka honey and vanilla pods mingle with sticky toffee on the nose, complemented by notes of maple syrup, baking spices, plums, blackberries, English marmalade and honey throughout the palate and lingering in the finish.
The Dalmore Vintages series combines the finest casks from a single year to create a single malt that embodies the distillery’s character and showcases the skill of its whisky-makers. The second release of whisky in this series includes this 2007 Dalmore that began its life in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels and was transferred into a combination of Matusalem, Amoroso and Apostoles sherry casks, and Marsala wine casks, before being married together and bottled in 2022. Aromas of freshly-baked brioche, ginger cake and fondant icing fill the nose, complemented by notes of orange blossom, mandarin, cinnamon, clove, ginger snaps and sugar-dusted pastries throughout the palate.
Originally bottled for the French market, this vintage release of The Dalmore aged for 10 years, initially in first fill bourbon barrels before being moved to specially selected Beam barrels for the final 2 years. The result is more gentle and floral than you may imagine.
Made in 1998 at Dailuaine distillery, this Speyside single malt has been matured in a pair of hogsheads for two decades, before being bottled in April 2019 for Signatory Vintage’s Cask Strength Collection. The palate offers notes of buttered toast, chocolate cereal, tobacco leaves and sweet pears.

A single cask bottling of Dailuaine single malt, independently bottled by those ever-wonderful Douglas Laing folks. This whisky was distilled by Dailuaine back in January 2007 and left to age in a refill hogshead for 10 years. In February 2017, it was bottled as part of the Provenance range with an outturn of 357 bottles.
Undoubtedly anything but a classic whiskey, already on the nose can be seen that you can expect here neither a single malt nor a boring standard blend. As a liquorice friend who appreciates sweet, sticky liquorice liquor almost 😉 as well as a beautiful Irishman or a hefty sweet Scot, I recognize the best of both worlds here. As a whiskey, I would give the Cutty Sark Black no 30 points, but he is too little “pure”, too little deep, not enough aromatic. As an alcoholic liquorice drink, however, the 77 points that I simply give out here are more than just earned.

The design on this special piece is carved by hand by artisans from a small community of the Mazahua people. Artisans from the Wixárika culture are the creators of its unique and colorful cap.

Exclusively created for travellers, each drop of this Chivas Regal 18 Year Old Blended Scotch whisky has been finished in First Fill Japanese Oak casks, a rarity even amongst Japanese whiskies. These remarkable casks are made using delicate Japanese Mizunara Oak that are up to 200 years old, making them not only difficult to source but also difficult to work with. The oak imparts wonderfully well-balanced notes of sweet clementine, pears, vanilla and exotic spices. The resulting finish is an intriguing marriage of Scottish complexity and passion with Japanese elegance and refinement.

This blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay is rose petal pink in colour, with persistent mousse and a chain of fine bubbles.
