Highland Park 18 Year Old Viking Pride Travel Edition (70cl, 46%)

Highland Park 18 Year Old Viking Pride Travel Edition (70cl, 46%)

Original price was: €149.Current price is: €119.

In 18 Year Old Viking Pride Travel Edition, we celebrate doing things our own way (often the hard way) and our commitment to the craft of whisky-making. One crucial aspect of that craft is harmonisation.

After marrying whisky from different casks together, we then give the liquid valuable time to harmonise in the cask before being bottled. A deliberately slow and unhurried stage, long since abandoned by many distilleries, cask harmonisation is what helps us achieve the intense balance that is our hallmark. By using a high proportion of first-fill sherry seasoned European and American oak casks and bottling 18 Year Old Viking Pride Travel Edition at its marrying strength of 46% ABV, the whisky’s delicious notes of heather honey, chocolate and cherries are intensified.

The resulting single malt whisky is rich and sweet, boasting a powerful balance of cherry jam, rich dark chocolate, heather honey and waves of floral, aromatic peat smoke.

We’ve been crafting our award-winning whisky at the Highland Park Distillery in Kirkwall, Orkney, since 1798. Age, experience and respect for tradition may define our whisky, but it’s Orkney that sets it apart. Something magic happens here and the result is the wild harmony of flavours found in our whisky.

Selecting similar quantities of contrasting cask types – nine first-fill European sherry seasoned oak hogsheads, eight ex-bourbon hogsheads, and nine refill hogsheads – gives the November 2019 Release of Highland Park 21 Year Old single malt whisky an impressively rounded and unique flavour. As the warm spices and rich dried fruit flavours of the European casks mingle with the sweeter, exotic fruit notes from the ex-bourbon hogsheads, the softer influence of the refill casks finishes off the harmony.

Bottled at its marrying strength of 46%, this exceptionally well-balanced whisky delivers notes of freshly-cut pineapple, ripe mango, juicy pears, sun-dried sultanas, dried exotic fruit, spice market aromas and curls of densely aromatic peat smoke.

Maturation in refill Sherry seasoned casks prevents oak from dominating the flavours of the whisky as it would if first-fill casks were used. This allows our robust and oily new make spirit to gently mature over an extended period of time, delivering a full-on aromatic peat flavour with a surprisingly sweet finish.

A 30 year old from Highland park and a winner of many awards including a Platinum award from the Chicago Beverage Testing Institute.

    STORY

In Malt Advocate, John Hansell commented “Whiskies like this one remind me why I fell in love with whisky in the first place” and we know exactly what he means. There’s that fudgy sweetness that characterises the more mature Highland Park, but here it’s combined with complex aromatic spices as well as dark chocolate orange and floral peat notes. Dry at the finish, it leaves an aromatic smoky flavour and a mouth-watering hint of mild, salty sea spray – the result of 30 years’ maturation on Orkney’s windswept island environment

Casks have a huge influence on our whisky. As our fresh new make spirit slowly matures inside them, the casks use these long years to impart their vast array of robust flavours.

It only follows then, that when you bottle straight from the cask, without adding water to reduce alcohol content, you are going to taste our whisky – and the cask’s influence – in its purest form.

Cask Strength Release No. 1 is matured predominantly in sherry seasoned American oak casks of different ages, hand-selected by Gordon Motion, our Master Whisky Maker. It is then directly bottled – not chill-filtered – to ensure the essential DNA and natural colour of our whisky stays intact. There is nothing in this whisky other than the whisky itself. Nothing but the intensely balanced, award-winning spirit of Highland Park.

It is at once sweet and smoky on the nose, with aromas of violets and ripe vanilla pods amidst waves of aromatic peat smoke. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, with soft toffee, heather honey, freshly grated nutmeg, and sun-ripened citrus fruits that give way to an exotically spiced crème brûlée finish.

Nose: A fuller dunnage / old oak cask nose going on here, with just a touch of lactic acid which tales off thankfully after a few moments leaving eucalyptus and cedar wood notes along with sweet autumn berries and gentle sherry christmasness and spice.

Palate: Pretty thick mouthfeel here, at first you think it’s smooth, but then spices kick in reminding you of Thorfinn’s power! It’s sweet, with wispy heathery sweetness amongst the gentle peat smoke. There’s American Oak sherry casks giving a menthol hit that turns up stronger in the finish.

Finish: A fresh slightly minty menthol kick, yet fruity and sweet. It’s fairly old and complex and stays around your palate for ages. Yummy.

Thoughts: A slightly off-putting nose for me at first but that clears given time to breath (you should give old whisky the time it deserves). Would I pay €1000 for a bottle? Nope… This needs to have its age stated at the very least in my mind when you’re paying that much. A pleasure to try nonetheless.

    RAGNVALD

Highland Park Ragnvald: 70cl, 44.6% ABV

Released in 2013, Ragnvald is part of The Warrior Series, a collection of single malts created for Duty-Free to both introduce a key figure from Orkney’s Viking history and to demonstrate the impact of cask type on our whiskyâs flavour, which is immense.

Arguably the most famous of the viking pioneers to sail uncharted waters, Ragnvald was more at home on sea than on land, undertaking numerous brave expeditions as far as the Middle East and even Asia. Ragnvald assisted King Harald and was given the title of Earl. He was a noted sailor and warrior and the black dragon or drekar is a symbol from the longships that he sailed.

Ragnvald was most at home aboard his longship undertaking his many great expeditions throughout the Middle East & Asia.

Colour: Full golden with rusty tints.

Nose: Could be described as “old school”, it’s full of old dunnage cask wood nose. Leather, casks, old stuff! Highland heather that’s wilting because it’s over hot smoke from a peat fire near the end of its burn. Coming out are old restrained sherry notes, and lashings of vanilla fudge from great first fill bourbon casks. Really a nose you keep sniffing at and enjoying.

Palate: Thicker and old tasting on the palate, spicy and lively however. Green and red apples dipped in toffee custard.

Finish: Complex and lasting, sweet and fruity with vanilla cream running through and a blast of smoke at the end. Balanced so that no sour cask notes are to be found, ideal.

Thoughts: Corker of a whisky, just the old style I love, but that my wallet doesn’t. For that sort of price you’d hope for an age statement. Saying that, damn, it’s a fine old dram to sit with for a lovely long evening while it’s cold and wet out.

    SIGURD

Highland Park Sigurd: 70cl, 43% ABV

Released in 2013, Sigurd is part of The Warrior Series, a collection of single malts created for Duty-Free to both introduce a key figure from Orkney’s Viking history and to demonstrate the impact of cask type on our whiskyâs flavour, which is immense.

The single malt is named after one of the most feared Viking earls in the Orkneyinga Saga. The symbol is a sword of Sigurd which he inherited from his dead father. The Sigurd whisky comes in a beautiful wooden box and as soon as the whisky is in your glass, you imagine yourself in the middle of this saga!

The last three & most recent offerings in the ‘Warrior’ series use an increased quantity of European oak sherry seasoned casks. This allows Sigurd, Ragnvald & Thorfinn to deliver more complex, richer and sweeter flavours.

Sigurd is considered amongst the strongest & most courageous warriors and ultimately one of the most feared Viking Earls.

Colour: Full gold with slightly rusty copper hues.

Nose: Give it some time and gentle soft autumn fruits will greet you, a little like a harvest festival pudding with a sheath of corn next to it for decoration.

Palate: A fuller, more oily mouthfeel greets you introducing smooth and creamy fruits as if they’ve been stewed and covered in vanilla custard, with nutmeg over the top to spice it up a touch. Inviting with a hint of smoke.

Finish: Smooth and oily, but something in there keeping you refreshed. Sweet and decadent, yet balanced and not deeply into the winter fruits.

Thoughts: A much more soothing and fine dram here, starting to be reflected in the price. It’s got more going on, but feels more relaxed and competent.Harald

    HARALD

Highland Park Harald: 70cl, 40% ABV

Released in 2013, Harald is part of The Warrior Series, a collection of single malts created for Duty-Free to both introduce a key figure from Orkney’s Viking history and to demonstrate the impact of cask type on our whiskyâs flavour, which is immense.

This bottling is named for King Harald Fairhair, King of Norway (b. 860-d. 940). His army, known as the “bersekers” were known to be fierce in bottle and often used their shields for both protection and as weapons.

Produced using both American & European oak casks. 50-50 first fill and refill, almost 50-50 Euro and American oak sherries.

Celebrated through this release, King Harald was famed for his army, which was revered across the world at that time.

    Colour: Full gold

Nose: Give it some time to open up and you’re rewarded with sherry fruits, raisins and sultanas all sitting in their own smoky pit. A little costal nature has crept in from somewhere. Spices and ginger are all there supporting it nicely.

Palate: Ever so slightly thin on the palate considering what the nose promises, but it’s smooth and sweet with gently spiced baked apples, it’s very pleasant indeed.

Finish: Slightly tingly on the way down and warming on the chest, nice and interesting finish here of a reasonable length.

Thoughts: A more full time autumnal dram that’s still light enough as an early evening drop of drammage.

    EINAR

Highland Park Einar: 1L, 40% ABV

Released in 2013, Einar is part of The Warrior Series, a collection of single malts created for Duty-Free to both introduce a key figure from Orkneyâs Viking history and to demonstrate the impact of cask type on our whiskyâs flavour, which is immense.

Einar Sigurdsson was the joint Earl of Orkney from 1014-1020 along with two of his brothers, which he inherited after his father, Sigurd, died in 1014 at the mighty Battle of Clontarf. His own death came as his youngest brother, Thorfinn was coming of age to claim his share of the earlship. Einar’s greed and overbearing ways led to his being killed at the hands of Thorfinn’s foster-father. Thorfinn the Mighty, went on to become one of the most powerful of all the earls in Orkney.

Einar was crafted as a tribute to one of the most feared and ruthless Vikings of his time. Einar was a hard and successful Viking, often venturing on treacherous long voyages.

Produced using both American & European oak casks.

Nose: For me a little more closed at first, but soon opens out revealing sweet, darker autumn fruits amongst smoky whiffs.

Palate: Smooth going spiced fairly quickly then settling back down to dark brown sugar and winter Christmas cake fruits. Quite autumnal. Just a tickle of smoke from the peat, but fairly restrained. Light enough mouthfeel (can only assume it’s chill-filtered), something also slightly spirity there too.

Finish: Sweet, warming, fruity and medium in length.

Thoughts: Not a surprise in that this is defo a step up from Svein, it’s gone from a summery dram into something much more suited for a slightly chilly autumn day, good stuff, and still fairly reasonably priced.

    SVEIN

Highland Park Svein: 1L, 40% ABV

Released in 2013, Svein is part of The Warrior Series, a collection of single malts created for Duty-Free to both introduce a key figure from Orkneyâs Viking history and to demonstrate the impact of cask type on our whiskyâs flavour, which is immense.

Svein is named after a Viking warrior who considered Orkney his home. When he wasn’t feasting and drinking in the winter months he would plant the fields and reap them himself when it was time to harvest. In his spare time, he would go back to his plundering and murdering ways in the Hebrides and in Ireland.

There’s lots of American Oak Sherry casks, a decent percentage are first fill (30%).

    Colour: Light gold

Nose: Barley malt coming through easily, I guess this is a little younger. Sweet and gentle hints of smoke. Green toffee apples and a touch of citrus (orange peel).

Palate: Instant sweet hit of smooth barley and vanilla sugars with slight spices kicking in after a moment along with a slight smokiness. Oak hinting strongly right in the background, enough to peak your interest. Fairly light mouthfeel, balanced, summery and easy going.

Finish: Spiced warmth hits your chest and dies away reasonably fast with dying embers lasting much longer.

Thoughts: A rather nice, inexpensive session dram.

    INGVAR

Highland Park Ingvar: 70cl, 60.5% ABV

Released in 2013, Ingvar is part of The Warrior Series, a collection of single malts created for Duty-Free market in Taiwan, to both introduce a key figure from Orkneyâs Viking history and to demonstrate the impact of cask type on our whiskyâs flavour, which is immense. This is a Cask Strength Special Edition.

This cask strength special edition is part of The warrior Series bottled exclusively for the Taiwanese duty free market – 70cl at 60.5% strength.

Highland Park Ingvar is a special edition of Highland Park single malt, released for the duty-free market in Taiwan. The whisky matured in American and European sherry oak casks and is bottled at a cask strength of 60.5%. This edition of the Warrior Series is inspired by Ingvar Ragnarsson, a fierce warrior king who conquered Dublin, York and the Kingdom of East Anglia with the Great Heathen Army. Highland Park Ingvar has tingling aromas of fresh pineapple, dried orange peel and golden syrup on the nose, wrapped in exotic spices and warmed by wood smoke. The palate is initially peppery and smoky. Soft hints of vanilla and fresh citrus zest then emerge, leading into a long finish with vanilla sweetness and lingering smokiness.

His son’s company was one of a new generation of Italian bottlers established in the 1990s, which aimed to replicate the successes of predecessors like Samaroli and Moon Import.

This is a blend of 1980 vintage malt and grain whiskies, aged in sherry wood and bottled as 35 year old in 2015.

It’s been 100 years or so since the Jack Daniel Distillery released a whiskey of 10 years of age or greater. Evolving Jack Daniel’s past aged-stated whiskey process, these Tennessee Whiskey barrels have been aging in the Buzzard’s Roost of our barrelhouse, and methodically relocated to the lower floors of different barrel houses to extend the aging process for the last 10 summers. The extreme weather variation at different locations in the barrel houses along with longevity in our handmade oak barrels creates an intense, unique character of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey.

Jack Daniel’s is now fully committed to experimenting with their lineup. After spending decades churning out Old Number 7 and Gentlemen Jack, the distillery in Lynchburg, TN has finally decided to fully embrace the whisky craze and explore new and exciting expressions for their lineup. After winning praise for their Barrel Proof and Bonded products, it feels right that they are now exploring longer maturations. So, while typical Jack Daniel’s is aged for “at least 4 years”, what we are drinking today is aged for at least 2.5 times that – meaning we have a full 10 year age statement!

Jack Daniel’s debuted this 10 year product last year to raucous excitement, and have continued the fun this year with a second batch of 10 year and the addition of an even older 12 year product this time around. And while Jack Daniel’s 12 year, this 10 year is rocking a 97 proof. And honestly, that seems pretty reasonable in a world of wildly expensive limited editions.

Jack Daniel’s 10 year (Batch 2) is an impressive follow up to the highly regarded first batch of Jack Daniel’s 10 year. While I never had the chance to try that first batch, if it was anything like this one, I know why there was so much hype. The 10 years in oak has clearly made a significant impact on the spirit, taking that sometimes brittle Jack Daniel’s profile and creating a rich and deep profile with more oak, complexity, and a fantastic mouthfeel. The longer maturation has balanced the banana Laffy Taffy sweetness and has elevated the profile to an approachable, yet complex place. This is a great pour worth seeking out. The MSRP is spot on here, so anything close to it is an instant buy for me. So, while it isn’t as challenging as Jack Daniel’s Barrel Proof can be, this is a fantastic addition to the lineup and might have you rethinking your Jack Daniel’s prejudices.

Introducing Jack Daniel’s 12-Year-Old Tennessee Whiskey. The Jack Daniel Distillery is one of the most complete whiskey distilleries in the world, and we’re able to craft premium whiskeys in a way that honors our heritage while highlighting the modern-day world-class whiskey-making. To honor our distillery’s past, our Master Distiller, Chris Fletcher handcrafted these aged-stated whiskeys and evolved our whiskey process to achieve a rare flavor profile.

I’m certain I’m not the first to say this, but this bottle and its Bonded and 10-year siblings are all the proof one needs to be convinced that Jack Daniel’s is best at higher proofs. The 12-year is a whiskey of tremendous complexity, character and texture, and the 10-year (review forthcoming) is barely less arresting. This Jack is mannerly, wizened, confident and worthy of standing alongside any American whiskey on a back bar. It belies its shockingly modest MSRP.

The nose is that unmistakably fruity-acetone yeast note from Brown-Forman whiskeys–that curious combo of fresh orange, bubble gum, cooked stone fruit and Luxardo Maraschino liqueur that I love. It’s lush and floral on the palate. Every sip is a wave of warmth and flavor rocking forward with fruit and oak and back with pie crust, pipe tobacco and baking spices. Finishes are rarely at the top of my list of interests, but this one is long, just barely dry and pleasant in every way.

Admittedly, it didn’t hurt a bit to taste it at the distillery in Lynchburg (a must-visit if you’ve not been there) with master distiller Chris Fletcher, an unabashed fan of the 12- and 10-year. Watching a guy’s face–who’s tried this liquid countless times–slip into a long and satisfied grin with a few sips says a lot about what’s in the glass and how it commands a pro’s attention.

For what it’s worth, I enjoy Jack Daniel’s cask-strength releases and even those orange-labeled brutes from Coy Hill (the highest rickhouse on Jack’s campus). But this 12-year is my favorite of the family.

Jack Daniel’s Distillery Distillery Series selection #11 is a Tennessee Whiskey that’s finished in Añejo Tequila barrels. Bottled at 90 proof, it’s available in 375ml bottles  According to Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller, “this añejo tequila barrel-finished whiskey pushes the bounds on what people may expect out of a Tennessee Whiskey, yet still has the familiar characteristics that are uniquely Jack Daniel’s.

The Distillery Series, as you may have gleaned from the name, are whiskey releases that are available to purchase from the distillery (and also at a few select Tennessee retailers). These are smaller bottles (375 ml instead of 750 ml) that are also produced in smaller batches in terms of the actual liquid. Past expressions have included a Toasted Maple Barrel Finished Rye and a Straight Tennessee Whiskey Finished with Toasted Pecan Wood Chips. This new expression, selected by whiskey taster Danny Lamb, is classic Jack whiskey matured in new charred American white oak barrels for at least four years, and then finished in barrels used to mature añejo tequila (meaning it was aged for more than a year) for one year and seven months. Parent company Brown-Forman owns a few different tequila brands, so while it’s not disclosed these barrels may have been used for Herradura or El Jimador.

As one of the most complete distilleries in the world, we’re fortunate to have the ability to experiment with every part of the whiskey making process, and that’s what our Distillery Series is all about,” said Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s master distiller, in a statement. “This añejo tequila barrel-finished whiskey pushes the bounds on what people may expect out of a Tennessee whiskey, yet still has the familiar characteristics that are uniquely Jack Daniel’s.

Jack Daniels – Family of Fine Whiskeys – Wooden box set

This gift set contains the classic Jack Daniel’s No.7, the refined Gentleman jack and the Elegant Single barrel. These three Jack Daniel’s whiskeys are the rocks in Jack Daniel’s Range.

The classic No.7 is one of the most popular whiskies in the world. The whiskey is filtered drop by drop through ten feet of sugar maple charcoal (known as the Lincoln County Process). The reason behind this is the distinct smoothness it generates making it a whiskey not bourbon. The water used is from a cave near the distillery that flows all year round at a rate of 800 gallons per minute at a constant temperature and is virtually iron free. These are the key ingredients and processes to make No.7 whiskey.

Gentleman Jack was one of Jack Daniel’s later creations made in 1988. The difference between Gentleman Jack and the rest of the Jack Daniel’s Whiskies is that it goes through the charcoal mellowing process not once but twice, giving it a more refined taste and worthy of being called a gentleman.

Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel is made in exactly the same way as No.7, it even includes the same ingredients. So what make this whiskey so special, it does have a higher ABV of 45% and is 100% proof but that isn’t all. The main difference is where the barrel is placed in the barrels house, for single barrel whiskies, they are placed at the highest point in the barrel house. Here the summer temperatures can reach well over 100 degree Fahrenheit and in the winter they can easily drop below freezing levels. These extreme conditions can cause the whiskey to move in and out of the barrel dramatically, resulting in the intense maturation needed to develop the unique flavour of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel.

In 1904 St. Louis, Missouri, was the 4th largest city in the U.S. and would become the host of what was informally known as the St. Louis World’s Fair. The theme of the World’s Fair was “Innovations and Inventions,” and exhibitors did not disappoint. In fact, many foods and products commonly used today were first introduced on a large scale to fair visitors. Such food items as waffle cones, cotton candy, peanut butter, and even Dr. Pepper were made popular as part of this exposition.

To celebrate his own Gold Medal victory, Jack created a special decanter to give as a gift to those who had helped make his award-winning whiskey. In 2004, for the 100th anniversary of the first Gold Medal, another replica decanter nearly identical to that of 1971 was released. This 1.75 liter decanter was also filled with 90 proof whiskey, but came in a wooden display box with a numbered hang tag.

In 1904, at the urging of family and friends, Jack Daniel took some of his whiskey to the World’s Fair whiskey competition in St. Louis, Missouri. Not many of the big distillers gave Mr. Jack much of a chance, but when it was over, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey was declared the finest whiskey in the world and was awarded the Gold Medal. This 750ml bottle, released in 1996, was the first in a series honoring each Gold Medal won by Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey.

The first gold medal awarded to Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey took place in 1904 when Jack entered his whiskey in competition at the World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. Nearly a century later, in 1996, the Distillery debuted the Gold Medal Series with the 1904 Gold Medal commemorative bottle to recognize this prior achievement.

Beginning in 1996 and continuing for the next 10 years, the Jack Daniel Distillery released its Gold Medal Series of commemorative bottles. Comprised of seven unique designs, each bottle in this series celebrates a different gold medal won by the Distillery. In the U.S., the series featured 750ml bottles filled with 90 proof whiskey. International markets offer these bottles only in a 1 liter size, with the exception of the first bottle in the series which was available only in the 750ml size.

1954 would present the opportunity to add another award to the Jack Daniel collection as a whiskey competition was to be held in Brussels, Belgium…Jack Daniel’s whiskey went on to win the Star of Excellence, awarded to whiskeys for a “surpassing of excellence.” This commemorative bottle celebrating that achievement was released in 2005.

The bottle we currently have here for sale has been signed by the late Jimmy Bedford, Jack Daniel’s’ sixth master distiller.

This special bottle is the sixth in the Jack Daniels Gold Medal Series and honours the 1954 Brussels Belgium Star of Excellence. As usual, there is a heart-warming story of simple country folk associated with this bottling:

“The story goes that Reagor Motlow, one of Lem’s sons, received a letter about a whisky judging contest in Brussels, Belgium. He handed the letter to Herb Fanning, his right hand man and told him to take care of it. And indeed Mr. Herb did! He walked right out of the production line and pulled off the first three bottles and sent them on their way. According to Mr. Herb, when the folks from the advertising department found he had pulled whisky for the competition from the bottling line, they were a bit upset and asked him why he hadn’t looked for some special whisky for the judging. To this Mr.Herb exclaimed, “Why all Jack Daniels is special!”

Later Mr. Herb, in recalling the story said he figured he might get fired over that, but about that time letter came announcing that Jack Daniels had won the star of Excellence!

The second letter seemed to set things right between Mr.Herb and the advertising team, because not only did Mr.Herb keep his job for many years before retiring, but he also appeared in quite a few Jack Daniels ads. Herb became one of Lynchburg’s best known and much loved citizens, and was a fixture on the Square until he passed away in 1997 at the ripe old age of 93. Mr.Herb’s lifelong love of and faith in Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey epitomises the character of the people behind the Jack Daniel Brand.”.

Although Jack Daniel’s is well known for its famous black label that appears on bottles all over the world, in the very early 1900’s the labels that adorned Jack’s bottles were not black at all. In fact, they were quite colorful and looked very different from the label we all know today. This new series, called the Legacy Edition Series, will showcase some of these old labels from over a century ago.

The first bottle in this series was filled with 86 proof whiskey and became available in the Summer of 2018 in both a 750ml (70cl internationally) size and a 1 liter size. Most locations received the smaller of the two, but the 1 liter version was available in Tennessee and at select duty free stores around the world.

The second release in a series celebrating the history of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey. Following the theme from the first bottling, we get to see a Jack Daniel’s label design only previously seen by people back in the days of yore and yonder. Evidently, this particular design was the first time that Jack Daniel’s was mostly decked out in black – a style that continues to this day!

The Maxwell House Decanter was considered one of the most beautiful of its time and oddly enough it was not Jack Daniel who was responsible for designing it. That honor instead went to Lem Motlow. The origin of this decanter’s name dates back to the year 1859 when Colonel John Overton Jr. began construction on a new hotel in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Ironically, had it not been for a night out on the town, this hotel might never have been built…

Over the years, the Maxwell House Hotel became a well-known stopping point for famous people passing through the South. Lem Motlow knew of the hotel’s popularity and prestige and saw this as a business opportunity for the Distillery…

To commemorate the decanter that Lem Motlow first presented to Colonel Overton, the Distillery released a half gallon replica bottle in 1971.

This limited edition bottle design for Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey commemorates the two pioneering founders behind each of these iconic brands – Mr. Jack Daniel himself and Bruce McLaren

In September, we reported on the new partnership between whiskey brand Jack Daniel’s and Formula 1 team McLaren Racing. And now the first quaffable example of this relationship has arrived in the form of a new special limited-edition bottle with a design that is both recognizable and new.

The whiskey inside the new Jack Daniel’s McLaren Racing limited-edition bottle is the same Old No. 7 you know and love—charcoal mellowed Tennessee whiskey with a mashbill of 80 percent corn, 8 percent rye, and 12 percent malted barley, bottled at the standard 80 proof. But the new label and box are meant to honor the founders of both companies—Jack Daniel’s himself and Bruce McLaren. The Jack Daniel’s name was officially registered with the government back in 1866, while McLaren Racing was founded nearly a century later in 1963. Jack has become one of the biggest whiskey brands in the entire world, while McLaren was won many races, including 20 Formula 1 World Championships.

“McLaren and Jack Daniel’s are two of the most iconic brands known around the world, and we’re excited to celebrate our partnership with a special bottle that nods to our shared spirit of independence, authenticity and boldness,” said Jack Daniel’s senior vice president and global managing director, Sophia Angelis, in a statement. “We have been working with the McLaren team to develop unparalleled experiences for both racing and whiskey fans, and we can’t wait to share more on what we have in store.” “In our 60th year we are marking our team’s great legacy, started by Bruce McLaren,” added Louise McEwen, McLaren’s executive director of brand and marketing. “This limited-edition bottle is another fantastic way to share these celebrations with our fans, remembering both Bruce and Jack—two distinguished founders.”

This new bottle will drop in May, so if you’re a fan of F1 racing and Tennessee whiskey keep your eyes peeled—the brand says it will be available in “select Formula 1 markets across the globe.”

Jack Daniels Monogram with smooth silver top (oldest one) release 1998 proof 94 75cl

It is said that Jack Daniel served whiskey to his closest friends from his own personal fine glass monogrammed decanters. These decanters were reserved for special occasions and it was with this in mind that the Jack Daniel Distillery released the 750ml Monogram bottle in 2009. Filled with 94 proof whiskey, this bottle was sold with no hang tag, but came in an attractive silver and black box.

When it was introduced in 2009, the Monogram bottle was a limited release for the state of Tennessee only. However, even though 2009 was the first year this bottle was available in the United States, it was actually released internationally in 1998 and then again in 2004. While these are not considered different generations of this bottle to Jack Daniel’s collectors, they are definitely considered different versions.

The first release of the Monogram, bottled in 1998. This was initially only an export bottling, but was eventually released domestically in the US in 2009. Each version is being identifiable by its cap type.

Jack Daniel’s is the best-selling American whiskey in the world. Despite that fact it can legally be categorised as a straight bourbon, it has always shunned this title, preferring to market itself as a Tennessee Whiskey. These are similar to straight bourbons but have the additional requirement of having been filtered through maple wood charcoal, a practice known as the Lincoln County Process. History has not always given the distillery an easy ride though. Tennessee was an early adopter of Prohibition in 1910, and one of the last to repeal it in 1938 (five years later than the repeal at Federal level). Even today the distillery is still located in a “dry” county, meaning none of its products are sold in its hometown or those around it. The distillery was then only operational for four years before being forced to close again during the second world war. Ten years later it was purchased by the Brown-Forman corporation and its fortunes turned for good. Its classic black-labelled Old No.7 brand (named after the distillery’s original DSP number) is now a globally recognised product.

The presentation is based on the glass decanters that Jack Daniel himself is rumoured to serve whisky to his friends with.

    A 125-YEAR MYSTERY, CAPTURED IN A BOTTLE.

This special edition marks the 125th anniversary when Mr. Jack Daniel opened the doors of his Red Dog SaloonTM. Formerly situated on the Lynchburg town square, all that remains of the Red Dog SaloonTM are myths and legends – until now.

We are pleased to release the limited edition Red Dog SaloonTM , commemorating the days when you could buy a drink of Jack’s smooth sippin’ Tennessee Whiskey in the town where it was made. Like every drop of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, this limited edition is distilled right here in Lynchburg, just as it was when Mr. Jack opened his saloon back in 1892. And, if the Red Dog Saloon was anything like its sister watering hole, the White Rabbit SaloonTM, the house was packed with music, camaraderie and conversation. We hope you enjoy yours the same way.

Bottled at 86 proof, Red Dog Saloon is available in select markets across the US and internationally.

The Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel is whiskey which, in contrast to Old No 7, has been drawn from barrels which have sat maturing at the highest points of the Jack Daniel’s barrelhouses. At these higher points in the barrelhouses, just as in a second or third floor in a house, the temperature is likely to fluctuate more dramatically than at lower points. So, for example, during hot times (summer, the day) these higher points in the barrelhouses would likely be warmer than lower points, but during cold times (winter, night) these higher points in the barrelhouses would likely be colder than lower points. This means that barrels which sit at the highest points of the barrelhouses tend to be exposed to more extreme temperature changes.

Only one out of every 100 barrels are set aside to mature whiskey that becomes Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel.

    The Story…

Visit to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery: Selecting and Bottling Our Own Whiskey.

During a visit to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, I had the incredible opportunity to choose and bottle my own whiskey straight from the barrel.

After a guided tour that showcased the whiskey-making process, from fermentation to charcoal mellowing, the real highlight came when I had the chance to hand-select my own barrel of Jack Daniel’s whiskey and bottle it.

I was presented with a selection of barrels, each offering a unique flavor profile due to its aging conditions.

Guided by the master distiller, I sampled several barrels, each with its own distinct character—one sweet and smooth, another spicier with deeper flavors.

After careful consideration, I found the perfect barrel: a balanced whiskey with rich caramel and oak notes, followed by a long, smooth finish.

The master distiller guided me through the tasting process, explaining how to properly nose the whiskey and what notes to look for when sipping. One barrel had a rich caramel aroma with hints of vanilla and oak on the palate, while another had a spicier edge with deep undertones of toasted nuts and fruit.

After sampling several, I was drawn to one particular barrel that had the perfect balance of sweetness and spice, with a long, smooth finish. This barrel stood out to me as the best of the selection, offering a complexity that I knew would make for an outstanding bottle of Jack Daniel’s. The barrel’s location in the warehouse can dramatically affect its flavor profile. Some barrels are placed higher, where temperature fluctuations are more extreme, while others rest lower, aging in a more stable environment. These differences in maturation result in subtle variations in flavor, even though the whiskey all starts as the same spirit.

The experience was an unforgettable dive into the craftsmanship behind Jack Daniel’s, giving me a new appreciation for the art of whiskey-making.

So, if you find yourself in Tennessee and are a fan of fine whiskey, make sure to stop by the Jack Daniel’s Distillery. You might just find your perfect barrel, too!
