Compass Box Stranger & Stranger (70cl, 46%)

In stock
  • ( 0 Customer Review )

A very interesting spirit produced by Compass Box in honour of their long term collaborators, design company Stranger and Stranger.

This bottling is technically not a whisky, as it contains 1% “sacrificial spirit”: wheat and barley distillate from Girvan distillery that had been used to season experimental new American oak barrels for a year, before a brief period in refill hogsheads. As it is under 3 years old, it cannot be considered a whisky. Compass Box state that the spirit had an intensely woody character with plenty of vanilla flavour.

The remaining 99% of the blend is taken from Glenlossie, Glen Elgin and Linkwood, with the whisky aged between 17 and 22 years old. Glenlossie provides 80%, drawn from a re-charred Hogshead. 14% is taken from re-charred barrels from Glen Elgin, whilst Linkwood provides just 5%, from a sherry butt.

The whisky is fruity and floral, with powerful notes of honeysuckle, orange blossom, alongside juicy citrus and apples, with some slight cut grass, a hint of mint, burnt sugar, vanilla custard, a touch of sweet wine and sultana, with a faint bright oak sweetness.

Bottled at 46% ABV, and without out chill filtration or colouration, this blend enjoys a full body.

The label is based upon Stranger & Stranger’s logo, altered with their trademark creativity.

Less than 5,000 bottles were released.

Introduced to the Great King Street range by Compass Box in 2014, the Glasgow Blend is a superbly full-bodied blended Scotch whisky. It’s made with 33% Lowland grain whisky and 67% malt whisky from the Highlands, Speyside and Islay, aged in a combination of first-fill and refill ex-bourbon barrels and first-fill Sherry casks, with a small portion being finished in new French oak. Plentiful amounts of Sherried fruit touches surrounding a core of peaty notes – yummers.

Fun note: The label features a picture of The Wellington Statue outside of Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art, complete with traffic cone hat, said to be a symbol of the city’s sense of humour.

This one from the Alchemy Series combines older malts with boisterous young smoke bombs, and even features some recognisable names like Bunnahabhain Moine, as well as the heaviest peated malt in the Black Bottle reserves. In early 2021, Black Bottle kicked off its Alchemy Series with two tasty whiskies, including this blended Scotch whisky titled Island Smoke (as well as the Double Cask expression)! It offers up whiffs of coastal air, scorched oak, seaweed and more, alongside familiar vanilla-rich sweetness and flashes of spice.

One of two initial releases in the Black Bottle Alchemy Series, Double Cask brings together malt whiskies finished in Spanish sherry casks with grain whisky aged in red wine casks. We have is a very experimental Scotch Whisky. As far as we know, this from Black Bottle is the first to have whisky matured in virgin Andean oak casks as part of its blend. The variety is unique to Colombia and Panamá and is regarded for its ability to thrive at altitudes that others cannot. Andean oak imparts a similar character to American oak, but with more tannins and spice. It was chosen in this case to elevate the creamy, smooth grain whiskies of the blend, by finishing them for seven months in Andean oak casks with various toast and char levels.

This has also inspired the new old-style black glass bottle, which gave the whisky its name.

Very high quality copper pot-still spirit is infused with ingredients including juniper, orange peel, coriander, cassia, cloves and cardamom, with the length of the compounding period controlled entirely by periodic sampling.

The result is an extraordinary gin, lightly tinted by the botanicals, and with a flavour which is both bold, and perfumed all at once. Sure to be a hit with amateur and professional mixologists alike.

The 2022 release of Ardbeg 25 Year Old is a smoky single malt with layers of sweetness that was matured in ex-bourbon barrels and bottled in 2021. Aromas of cream, smoke, peppermint, toffee, fennel, pine resin, earthy bonfires and ripe bananas fill the nose, complemented by notes of white pepper, sherbet lemons, candied apples, oranges, pears, tar, carbolic soap, creamy toffee, aniseed, rich smoke and antiseptic throughout the palate.

Bottled from incredibly rare casks filled during some of the Distillery’s darkest days, this is Ardbeg at its most intricate, balanced and beguiling.

Majestic aromas of smoked cream and earthy bonfires are masterfully interwoven with layers of pine and fragrant candle wax. Hot pepper rises on the palate, twisting around lemon sherbet sweetness, while hints of carbolic soap and tar flow into a long aftertaste characterised by delicate aniseed entwined with lingering cream and fudge.

Alkkemist Gin features a base of triple-distilled grain spirit and 21 different botanicals, interestingly including Muscat grape, alongside orange and lemon peel, rose petals, samphire, fennel, thyme and mint, among others. Also, it’s apparently “distilled by the light of the full moon”! A wonderfully-presented gin that works excellently in a G&T as well as a number of cocktails.
