A blended whiskey (or blended whisky) is the product of blending different types of whiskeys and sometimes also neutral grain spirits, colorings, and flavorings. It is generally the product of mixing one or more higher-quality straight or single malt whiskey with less expensive spirits and other ingredients. This typically allows for a lower priced finished product, although expensive “premium” varieties also exist.
Some examples of blended whiskey include Canadian Mist, Jameson Irish Whiskey, Seagram’s Seven, Kessler Whiskey, the premium Japanese brand Hibiki, and the various Scotch whisky blends sold under the Johnnie Walker brand.

This is an incredible 38 year old blended whisky from Chivas, named for the Stone of Destiny – a block of red sandstone used in the coronations of the monarchs of Scotland and later the monarchs of the United Kingdom.

The Ghost and Rare series from Johnnie Walker Blue Label kicked off in 2017 and took a break last year.
Diageo’s Johnnie Walker brand is readying the release of the fourth in its Ghost and Rare series of bottlings from the Blue Label expression.
A tribute to the now-defunct Pittyvaich distillery on Speyside, the no-age-statement blended malt will be available from next month in limited numbers. Whisky from two other closed distilleries, Port Dundas and Carsebridge, features in the blend along with liquid from Speyside’s Mannochmore, Auchroisk, Cragganmore and Strathmill as well as Royal Lochnagar in the Highlands.
Pittyvaich opened in 1974 before closing its doors 18 years later.
When contacted by Just Drinks, a spokesperson for Diageo declined to give specific quantities of the bottling, citing commercial sensitivity. However, each bottle will be “individually numbered”, according to the brand owner.
Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost & Rare Pittyvaich follows 2017’s Brora bottling, Port Ellen from a year later and 2019’s Glenury Royal in the series.

Angus Dundee 30 Years is a gold colored whiskey from Scotland. This variant is a composition of various grain and malt whiskeys that have been allowed to mature in white oak barrels for at least thirty years. Because a number of these whiskeys are no longer available, this variant of Angus Dundee is also limited . It offers a very rich and soft aroma full of spice and light notes of citrus. Its palate is smooth, creamy and full of notes of vanilla that slowly contract with the sweet malted barley leaning towards honey . A wave of fruity sweetness takes you to its finish that is full of sweet notes and a spicy finish. Angus Dundee 30 Years has an alcohol percentage of 40%.

Wilson & Morgan was founded in Italy in 1992 by Fabio Rossi, the son of prolific importer Mario Rossi Jr, who began distributing Scotch whisky back in the 1960s. This aged version of the classic Red Label enjoys a similar cult following. Its unique complexity is achieved by expertly blending an extremely diverse, but complementary range of malt whiskies, each of which has been matured for a minimum of 12 years and some for much longer. In total, up to 40 malts and grain whiskies make up the Black Label blend. Island and Islay malts deliver spice, richness and lingering peat. Speyside malts make an important contribution to the depth of taste, bringing smoky malt, fruitiness, apple freshness and a rich sherry character to the blend. At the heart of Black Label lies 12 year old Cardhu, an outstanding malt from Speyside, which imparts silkiness, a characteristic which has made it famous as a single malt.
To date, Black Label has won more international awards for excellence than any other deluxe whisky. In the 1880s, Old Highland won medals in Sydney and Paris. Over 100 years later, in 1994, Black Label picked up gold medals at the 1994 Monde Selection Awards and the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), where it also won a trophy for Best Blended Whisky. This old bottling of Chivas Imperial 18 Years old is completely different from its modern counterpart. It has a strength of 43% and is said to have a more pronounced honey flavour.

The first release in Royal Salute’s Polo series, which celebrates the world’s iconic polo destinations, the Polo Estancia Edition is a 21-year-old blended whisky that pays homage to Argentina – the home of polo. Polo Estancia has been finished in Argentinian Malbec casks from Cafayate, creating aromas of raspberries, blackberries, sweet liquorice and summer berry compote that fill the nose. The palate offers notes of cinnamon, plum jam, dark chocolate, crystallised ginger and dry oak that linger in the finish.

New for 2018, but not scheduled for release in Australia is this new JW expression, inspired by the iconic Black Label. It’s No.7 in the experimental series, and set exclusively for Travel Retail. The 12-year-old blend is described as “a smooth-sipping dark whisky with notes of vanilla and smoke, raisins and a warming finish of dark chocolate”. Composed of whiskies from Blair Athol, Cardhu and Strathmill distilleries, among others and finished in former Sherry casks for up to nine months, it was a collaborative effort between whisky maker, Aimée Gibson and Johnnie Walker’s Master Blender, Jim Beveridge.
With previous bottlings including wine and rum cask finishes, and even an Espresso Roast expression, Blenders’ Batch whiskies are the result of over a hundred ongoing experiments. At this price you can afford to buy one to collect and another to drink – perfect on its own or mixed with ginger ale.
An absolute gem of a whisky, the 21 year old Royal Salute Signature Blend is a sophisticated expression. It’s aged for a minimum of 21 years in honour of the 21 Gun Salute that is fired at the Tower of London for Royal celebration. The whisky is presented in a classic blue Wade ceramic decanter.
Black Bull 21 Year Old blended Scotch whisky from Duncan Taylor once again shows off the blending prowess behind the brand. This expression features a high proportion of Highland whiskies, as well as some Speyside and a touch of Islay, with a 55% malt to grain ratio. Big, bold and spicy, this bull definitely has horns.
This Whisky Matured for a total 27 years , this impressive blended Scotch whisky from Dewar’s joins its Double Double series. Following four stages, the component whiskies are first aged before being blended, further aged, and finally finished in Palo cortado sherry casks.

The second addition to the Johnnie Walker Explorers’ Club Series – “The Gold Route” was launched in 2013 as a Travel Retail exclusive.
Developed as a ‘luxury’ whisky, Walker’s Master Blender, Jim Beveridge describes this as an, “exotic mix of bananas, mango and pitaya,” with a taste of “pineapples, guava, passionfruit and raisins, all balanced perfectly by deep charred peaty notes in keeping with the signature smoky Johnnie Walker flavour”.
The Explorers’ Club Collection which was released over 2012 and 2013 to honour the Johnnie Walker Whisky Traders has always been scheduled for Duty Free stores only. We’ve managed to secure tiny quantities from a secret source in order to satisfy CYPRIOT followers of the brand who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to obtain these limited editions. So far the Trade Routes series has included The Spice Road, The Gold Route and The Royal Route. However, there’s a missing link that’s arguably the most collectable of all.
Jan van den Ende , writing for ‘Best Shot Whisky Reviews’ explains, “It is likely that The Adventurer was the first of a new series within The Explorer’s Club Collection. However a law suite was launched by the existing real life Explorer’s Club that included such legendary names as Buzz Aldrin and Sir Ernest Shackleton. The Club funds scientific Research and Education and did not want their name used for commercial purposes without their permission. A judge ruled in favour of the Club in August 2014 which forced Diageo to rethink their strategy with regards to the Explorer’s Club Collection. As a result, the Adventurer has become almost a rarity and a collector’s item despite its humble ambitions.”
Number two in Johnnie Walker’s collectable “Blender’s Batch” series comes with an American twist: Composed from five distilleries including grain whisky from the now-closed Port Dundas, this was aged in first-fill Bourbon barrels before a six month finishing in former American rye whiskey casks. Its inspiration stems from Jim Beveridge’s time spent blending Bourbons and ryes in Kentucky in the 1990s. Normally a travel retail exclusive, we’ve sneaked a small volume into out latest shipment!
