The grapes are sourced primarily from contract growers of the crus of Agios Panteleimon within the Amyndeon Appellation in Northwestern Greece. Sprawling at an altitude of 600m on poor sandy soil, the vineyards reach yields that rarely exceed 40 hl/ha. The area is marked by cold winters and warm summers, but the four surrounding lakes create a unique mild mesoclimate. As a result, we get high fruit concentration and ripeness with exquisitely complex and rich aromas.

Amyndeon had a heavy winter with very low temperatures. April had very low temperatures as well and in May we had some hail, which damaged some plants – production therefore was lower than usual. Summer however was very dry and warm and the abundance of rain helped us get earlier ripening and very healthy crop. 2017 will be a very aromatic year for the Amyndeon whites. Xinomavro too, is expected to give excellent results.

    About Montes Alpha M

Can a wine align with the universe’s energy?
In the Colchagua Valley (Chile), amidst vineyards that embrace the slopes of the Coastal Mountain Range, emerges an exceptional wine where the ancient wisdom of feng-shui, Gregorian chants, and gravity converge in a ritual of harmony and excellence. Montes Alpha M, aside from being a superb red, is a statement of principles: absolute respect for energy, nature, and quality.
Bodega Montes not only marked a turning point in Chilean viticulture but also elevated the crafting of wines to an experience that transcends vinification. Since its inauguration in 2004, this winery has been a pioneer in integrating the oriental philosophy of feng-shui into every corner of its architecture, ensuring the flow of positive energy that connects those who work there, the wines, and the universe. Water, wood, sun, moon, and metal are not merely symbols; they are living principles that govern the soul of the project. In its barrel room, Gregorian chants resonate daily to accompany the aging of its wines in an atmosphere of complete serenity.
Montes Alpha M is the most cherished jewel of this philosophy. A blend of cabernet sauvignon with precise contributions from cabernet franc, merlot, and petit verdot, born in granite-origin soils, on slopes with inclinations of up to 30 degrees. Hand-harvested and vinified with the utmost respect for the fruit, this wine is guided by the force of gravity, the freshness of dawn, and the almost surgical precision of a team that listens to the vineyard before intervening. After 18 months of aging in French barrels, each bottle embodies power, elegance, and extraordinary aging potential.
Tasting Montes Alpha M is to surrender to a sensory experience of high emotional voltage. Its enveloping structure, silky tannins, and complex expression of black fruit, spices, damp earth, and tobacco invite pairing with red meats, lamb, or game dishes in memorable celebrations. It is a wine that demands time, attention, and the desire to connect with something greater. Because in every sip, there beats the perfect balance between the earth, man… and the energy that unites them.

This sensational Reserva is truly worthy of its subheading. Though you can’t imagine that there are many non-special selections being made in Muga, this really is exceptionally fine wine. Made from a selection of the best parcels in their own vineyards and aged for a total of 44 months in oak barrels and in bottle, the wine has amazing ageing potential. Soft, smooth, elegant and medium-rich with flavours of red berry, smoky oak, coffee notes, black fruit and spice, it is utterly delicious, powerful yet balanced.

Tim Atkin, 96 points; wine of the year for 2021.

From one of the great houses of Haro, Muga’s wines are all worth getting excited about. They are the perfect living example of how to balance tradition with an embracing of the new, using oak in every part of the winemaking process, fining with egg whites (between 2 and 3 are enough for 100 litres), and yet a complete understanding of the technology in terms of vineyard research, fermentation processes, technical analyses, quality management and ISO standards that have only been available in the last twenty years or so.

The results are so obviously brilliant that one wonders why others aren’t all flocking to follow-on from Muga’s example. It could well be the cost that this devotion incurs as these are expensive philosophies to adopt; whatever the reason, there are few who consistently produce such recognisably smooth, complex and delicious wines as Muga. We’re lucky to have them.

    Winemaker’s Comments

Pangea is a well-rounded, distinguished wine with an intense, dark color. It has delicious, complex aromas which come through in the mouth with soft notes of red and blueberries, harmoniously intermingled with spices like black pepper, dark chocolate and subtle notes of vanilla and caramel. This wine has an exceptional  combination of concentration, flavors and aromas. Pangea is at essence a Syrah from the Apalta Valley that faithfully expresses its terroir of granitic soils with high quartz content, properties that are reflected in every glass. This is a well-structured wine with plenty of  acidity and ripe, firm tannins. We recommend decanting  it prior to drinking.

With grapes from a selection of soils in Apalta and a special fermentation, we have achieved a full-bodied, concentrated wine. 18 months in French oak barrels and one year in the bottle have brought balance and roundness to the wine and concentrated the purity and elegance of the fruit.

Château de Saint Cosme is the leading estate of Gigondas and produces the benchmark wines of the appellation. The property has been in the hands of the Barruol family since 1570. Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1992 making a dramatic shift to quality and converting to biodynamics in 2010.

The estate lies in the heart of Gigondas where 15 hectares of vineyard grow in the shade of the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain. In addition to the estate-grown wines labeled “Château de Saint Cosme,” Louis Barruol buys grapes from contracted growers, labeling these “négociant” wines simply as “Saint Cosme.”

Côte-Rôtie is produced from 100% Sérine, an ancient and local variety of Syrah that is markedly different from modern selections. It is more oval, with lots of space in the bunch, resulting in a very aromatic wine. It is sourced from the schist soils of Le Plomb, Besset, La Viallière, and Neve climats. These hillsides are among the steepest in France with an incline as much as 55 degrees. The wine is made with whole cluster fermentation from indigenous yeasts, aged for 12 months in 40% new 228-liter barrels, and bottled without fining or filtration.

Tuscan wine royalty, Tenuta San Guido, releases Sassicaia 2021, the latest vintage of its true iconic flagship wine this February. The 2021, available through importers Armit Wines, has been eagerly anticipated following favourable vintage conditions on the rolling slopes of Bolgheri, towards Tuscany’s stunning western coastline. We sent The Buyer’s very own Italophile, Mike Turner, to taste the wines with Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta and find out more about what proves to be another much sought-after triumph for the team at Tenuta San Guido.

The Sassicaia 2021 Bolgheri Sassicaia of Tenuta San Guido was obtained from Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) and Cabernet Franc (15%) grapes raised in the prestigious DOC of the same name which is located within Tenuta San Guido, located in the territory of Bolgheri (LI). The vineyards of origin are situated on calcareous soils rich in marl, stones and stones (which give the wine its name) and partly clayey, located at an altitude between 100 and 300 metres above sea level. For this red-masterpiece, the alcoholic fermentation took place in stainless steel at a controlled temperature between 28° and 30° C without the addition of external yeasts. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was transferred to French oak barriques (for 1/3 new wood and for the remainder of the first and second passage) where it was aged for 24 months, keeping the masses separated by vineyard origin. The assembly was in fact carried out only close to bottling. Before release, Sassicaia 2021 rested for a certain period of time in the bottle.

    Robert Parker (97)

The Tenuta San Guido 2022 Bolgheri Sassicaia reveals a beautiful fruit profile with fresh blackberry, tart cherry and Mediterranean tones of blue rosemary blooms and lavender sachet. I tasted this wine several times over the course of a few months, and it has already shown a happy evolution coming into slow focus like the faint colors that emerge from a Polaroid photograph. Indeed, the bouquet appeared more closed just a short while ago. The wine’s strongest suit is its elegantly streamlined mouthfeel and its contained 13.5% alcohol content. These qualities add to the silky cleanness of the mouthfeel and the accessible freshness of this vintage. I am confident that this bottle will improve with time. It requires patience.

    Winespectator (95)

A bit shy aromatically, this concentrated red exhibits flavors of black currant, black cherry, blackberry, tobacco and sweet spices that show a hint of eucalyptus, with assertive tannins that take hold as this evolves through the finish. Although closed and compact at this stage, this is balanced, fresh and long overall. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

    James Suckling (98)

Plenty of red currant, cedar, iron and terra cotta aromas follow through to a medium to full body with graphite, sandalwood, red currants and fresh Mediterranean herbs such as thyme and rosemary. The tannins are chewy but polished in texture. This is a Sassicaia that needs three or four years of bottle age to come together and soften. A structured wine for the cellar.

    Jancis Robinson (18)

88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, harvested throughout September. 13–15 days’ maceration. Aged for 23 months in French oak barriques (225 litres). TA 6.1 g/l, pH 3.45, RS 0.25 g/l. See my earlier note. This bottle presented by a Frenchman!
Transparent crimson. Savoury, balsam, appetising nose. Much drier (as opposed to sweet) than the other wines here. Strong French influence on the reticent structure. Lots of fresh tannin currently dominates the fruit but the fruit is pretty nuanced and interesting. But it’s still extremely youthful. The most youthful wine here. Aerate before serving for many years. (JR)

    Vinous (94)

The 2022 Sassicaia is a very pretty, expressive wine. There’s a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon (and less Franc) in this year’s blend, and that really comes through in the wine’s flavor profile and slightly bruising tannins. Dark cherry, plum, leather, licorice, graphite and incense give the 2022 striking aromatic presence to match its rather brooding personality. There’s a bit of tension in the tannins that needs time to resolve. Yields were down about 20% because of intensely cold weather in spring, variable conditions during flowering and set, and then searing heat and drought throughout the summer.

    Jeb Dunnuck (97)

The 2022 Sassicaia is a deeper, youthful magenta/red color with a slightly deeper aromatic profile of rosemary, gravelly earth, sage, mossy earth, and fresh black cherries. The palate has slightly broader shoulders but remains elegant. It has more plushness on the mid-palate, while its acidity shines through with the finish. It will need several years to shed its baby fat and show its full potential.

Tío Pepe, produced by González Byass in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), is one of the most famous and acclaimed sherries in the world.

This 100 percent sherry is made from Palomino grapes planted at a 600 acre estate on the outskirts Jerez, in the “Jerez Superior” area.

The harvest is carried out manually and the grapes are transported in 15-kg boxes to prevent them from breaking and beginning fermentation prematurely.

The grapes are gently crushed to obtain the first pressing. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The must obtains 12-13% alcohol content, and will later be used as a “vino fino” (refined wine) or Oloroso sherry.

Wine that is selected to become part of the “criadera” of Tío Pepe is fortified with wine alcohol up to 15% ABV, becoming a “Sobretabla Fino” that will age one more year in American oak casks before becoming part of the “Criaderas y Solera” range, a denomination it will keep for at least five years.

Ca’ Florian is the heart of Tommasi, our oldest vineyards, and the intimate and coveted place that we have called home since 1902. There could be no better place to honor our humble beginnings and no better way to do it than by dedicating this single-vineyard to our top Amarone Riserva. Just next door to the house where our grandfather Giacomo settled, are the family’s first vineyards. Here, we have preserved every living memory of tradition, from the “marogne” dry-stone wall terraced vineyards with the pergola veronese trellising, to the withering of the grapes on the “arele”, the handmade bamboo racks. Each vintage counting less than 9,000 bottles, conveys the core values of timeless simplicity and elegance in our winemaking. Forget it in the cellar for an unforgettable moment in a decade or two.

    Mas La Plana Estate

Located in the heart of the Penedès, in the Turons de Vilafranca sub-region, and bordered by the Foix River and the Llitrà stream, the 29-hectare vineyard is spread over ten plots and two levels, with clayey soils in the lower reaches and predominantly marl in the upper reaches. Here, the old Cabernet vines, planted in the 1960s, have taken root well and produce balanced wines, also influenced by the Mediterranean climate. Mas La Plana is now a vibrant natural ecosystem thanks to regenerative viticulture, which aims to restore the soil’s natural fertility, prevent erosion, and promote biodiversity, while increasing the vineyard’s capacity to absorb atmospheric CO2, thus contributing to the fight against climate change.

    DO Penedès

With 2,700 years of winemaking history behind it, making it the oldest wine-growing region in Catalonia, the Penedès DO is wide and open, stretching across a stretch of land between the sea and the mountains, halfway between Barcelona and Tarragona. The influence of the Mediterranean sun and sea makes the Penedès a privileged territory for grape growing. This uniqueness gives rise to the diversity of Penedès DO wines. A thousand flavors and aromas are the result of the differences in climate, landscape, and soil.

    THE LEGEND DRESSED IN BLACK

The fruit of Miguel A. Torres’ vision and determination, Mas La Plana burst onto the international scene in 1979 when, with its first 1970 vintage, it defeated the world’s leading Cabernets at the Gault & Millau Wine Olympics, held in Paris. Thus was born the legend of a wine that represented a paradigm shift at the time and set the course for producing superior wines from our own vineyards. Over time, it has evolved to reach its peak of expression today, thanks to the strong roots and balance of the old Cabernet vines.

    Miguel Torres Anthology

The Miguel Torres Anthology encapsulates our essence as the Torres Family and represents the harmonious union of nature and the expertise of our winemakers. These are our most iconic wines, selected for their unique origins and exclusive production. Five wines share a common theme, faithfully representing the vineyard where they are born and the effort to give each one a unique identity.
