Whisky (or whiskey) is produced in various guises all over the world. Japanese Whisky, Irish Whiskey and American Whiskeys (including Bourbon) are challenging Scotch Whisky, with of them many winning notable awards and accolades. Meanwhile, whiskies from countries as diverse as India, Canada, Sweden, Wales, Taiwan and England are also becoming increasingly noteworthy in both quality and abundance.
The distillation process spread to Scotland and Ireland by the 15th century via Alexandrian Greeks, Medieval Arabs and Latin Europeans. The Scots and the Irish, who already had a well-developed tradition of farming cereal crops, used the technique to distil from a variety of fermented grain mashes to produce a spirit, most closely resembling today’s new make spirits.
The process of distilling fermented grain mash and aging it in oak barrels to make Whisky (or whiskey) has spread the world and has resulted in a remarkable range of styles, including Single Malt Whisky, Blended Malt Whisky, Grain Whisky, Rye Whiskey and Blended Whisky (containing both Single Malt Whisky and Grain Whisky).

The Heaven’s Door range of whiskey have been created by Bob Dylan (yes, actual Bob Dylan, the legendary songwriter) and Marc Bushala (founder of Angel’s Envy Bourbon), made in a church in Tennessee. This expression is made with a mash bill featuring 30% “small grains”, and the spirit is allowed to age for at least 8 years in American oak barrels. The bottle features a design from Dylan’s own wrought ironwork, and the name is of course a reference to his song ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’.

26years, in Irish whiskey terms, is ages. A quick scroll through any of the obvious channels will yield hundreds of scotch whiskies of that age or older, but properly mature Irish is much thinner on the ground.
It’s brilliant to see Aldi move beyond Scotland when putting together their rare whisk(e)y offering for this year. Makes one hope that their gaze might turn upon the USA – or even Canada – in 2018.

Master distiller Billy Walker described this expression as having an “exceptional balance of the distillery’s spirit and the influence of the sherry casks used during maturation.” We’d have to agree.

The final and oldest in their Trilogy series, aged 44 years from 1964 to 2008. Combining bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks, gives a nose of citrus and tropical fruit, with a hint of warm smoke. The palate is wonderfully smooth leading to sweet honey, vanilla and warm oak. Dried fruit comes to the fire towards the end. The finish brings soft toasted oak and roasted almonds.

This is the second in this famous trilogy 43 Year Old ‘White Bowmore’ was distilled on the 5th November, 1964, and bottled in 2008. This is the second in a limited edition trilogy to be released by Bowmore. Only 732 bottles were released in total.
White Bowmore has been gradually maturing in six bourbon casks in the distillery’s famous No 1 vaults since 1964; they have now been bottled as a coveted collector’s item for whisky connoisseurs throughout the world. An extraordinary melange of pure tropical fruit character with venerable oak and maritime notes.
This limited edition White Bowmore offers up a beautiful array of tropical fruits and eloquent salinity. The previous release of a 21 Year Old Glenlivet was called Archive and it won pretty much every award going including a double gold medal in San Francisco, a gold at the IWSC, and best newcomer in a Chevy Chase movie at the Shepton Mallet film festival. Maybe not that last one. So there’s no pressure on this new expression. It’s been treated to a triple finish in first-fill oloroso sherry casks, Troncais oak Cognac, and colheita Port casks. The latter are essentially tawny Ports from a particular year. This rich trio has made the 21 a decadent blend of fruit and spice.

This very rare and highly sought-after 10 year old Laphroaig Cask Strength Red Stripe Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky comes from the famous cask strength series and is the successor to the legendary Laphroaig Cask Strength Green Stripe. Bottled in the year 2005-2007 at cask strength 55.7% abv, this terrific single malt is one of the legendary whiskies from Laphroaig, where the rough Atlantic climate around the island of Islay is literally felt on the tongue. The oak casks used in the production of the 10 years Laphroaig cask strength scotch whisky are lightly fired before filling to impart the slightly sweet vanilla-nuttiness of the oak. The Islay single malt whisky is then matured in Laphroaig s warehouses for a period of 10 years before being bottled at cask strength (straight from the wood).

For Jack’s 160th birthday in 2010, the Distillery took the commonly used Heritage bottle, and with a few modifications, made a bottle unlike any before it. No longer clear glass, this bottle was painted black by Chattanooga Labeling Systems. The idea came from Michael Osborne Design, which also devised the black label for the bottle and the box in which it came. While the 750ml size is quite common, the 1 liter version of this bottle was only released in a limited number of states.

Macallan vintage releases produced by Campbell, Hope & King tended to be aged around the 15 year old mark, but when Macallan took over the responsibility in 1980, they toyed for a few releases with more advanced age-statements of 17 and 18 years old. The latter was deemed the optimum maturation, and the official 18 year old was launched in 1984. It is now an absolute classic of the whisky world. This is the release of Macallan 18 Year Old that carried a vintage. In this case, the whiskies were distilled in 1994 and earlier years.
The famous Macallan 18 year old no longer carries the vintage that the spirit was originally distilled in. This is the final release carrying that year.
