The Glenlivet distillery is a distillery near Ballindalloch in Moray, Scotland that produces single malt Scotch whisky. It is the oldest legal distillery in the parish of Glenlivet, and the production place of the Scottish whisky of the same name. It was founded in 1824 and has operated almost continuously since. The distillery remained open throughout the Great Depression and its only closure came during World War II. The Glenlivet distillery has grown in the post-war period to become one of the biggest single malt distilleries in order to keep up with global demand; The Glenlivet brand is the biggest selling single malt whisky in the United States and the second biggest selling single malt brand globally.

Master Distiller’s Reserve is matured in three different types of wood which gives this expression its unique flavour. Traditional oak casks complement the classic style of The Glenlivet: ripe pear and gentle summer notes. American oak provides depth with creamy notes of coconut and soft fudge. First fill ex-sherry oak imparts dried fruit flavours and spice aromas which offer a deeper complexity and richness.

Back in 2013 The Glenlivet released a whisky called Alpha with no tasting notes, no cask details and an opaque black bottle. ‘Twas quite good fun as everybody tried to guess the production technique used, before the eventual reveal (on that occasion they’d used casks conditioned with Scotch as opposed to bourbon or Sherry, unique for The Glenlivet).
Now it seems we’re being treated to a new mystery, a cipher, in fact! Master Distiller Alan Winchester once again invites us to decipher the secrets of a unique single malt…

The story of The Glenlivet is an interesting one. Way back in the 1800s, founder George Smith managed to illegally distil his whisky in a remote Glenlivet Valley cottage using hand-crafted copper stills. To make it great, he evaded lawmen while smuggling his creation across the Scottish Highlands and the legacy lives on. After enduring the Great Depression and WWII to become one of the most acclaimed whisky brands available, the Scottish icon is now celebrating that rebellious history with The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Illicit Still.
This release is the first in a yearly limited edition series celebrating The Glenlivet’s past, each boasting new flavours and designs. The 12 Year Old Illicit Still itself is non-chill filtered and in keeping with drinks of old; has a higher than average ABV of 48%. This whisky has been called a lot of things in its time: smooth, fruity, complex, sophisticated, entertaining, classic. The Original Malt Whisky Almanac says: “A first-class malt. One of the most popular malts in the world – deservedly so.” Representing The Glenlivet’s signature style, this classic malt is first matured in traditional oak, before spending time in American oak casks which impart notes of vanilla and gives the whisky it’s distinctive smoothness. The mineral-rich water that comes from Josie’s Well helps form the flavours during mashing and fermentation, whilst the specific height and width of the copper stills add a delicate yet complex character. Keep a bottle on hand for every occasion.
The Nàdurra range uses traditional 19th-century production methods to create inventive and original whiskies. This version is matured in first-fill Oloroso sherry oak casks from the Spanish region of Perez. The sherry-soaked wood introduces the rich, sultry flavours of dried fruit and warm spice. Nàdurra Oloroso, like all expressions in the range, is bottled and released in small batches, and, unlike most modern whiskies, is non-chill filtered so has all the body you would expect from a whisky that has been drawn straight from the cask. It’s a bright, vivacious gold liquid, with aromas of dried fruit and spice. To drink, it’s smooth and creamy with chocolate and marmalade. This is a divine example of what happens when you bring together Spanish passion and Speyside tradition. This whisky is all about using traditions to achieve modern brilliance. The Nàdurra Oloroso is also bottled at 48% for Travel Retail.
