Speyside single malts are single malt Scotch whiskies, distilled in Strathspey, the area around the River Spey in Moray and Badenoch and Strathspey, in northeastern Scotland.
The two best-selling single malt whiskies in the world, The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, come from Speyside. Strathspey has the greatest number of distilleries of any of the whisky producing areas of Scotland. Dufftown alone has six working distilleries with an annual capacity of 40.4m litres of spirit.
Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail is a tourism initiative featuring eight Speyside distilleries and the Speyside Cooperage. Speyside also hosts an annual whisky festival known as “Spirit of Speyside”.
Speyside whiskies can generally be classified as light and grassy (e.g. Glenlivet) or rich and sweet (e.g. Macallan).

The Triple Cask range is matured in first-fill American oak barrels, traditional refill casks and first-fill Oloroso Sherry butts. The 16 year old shows off a lot more vanilla and fruit than the 12 year old Triple Cask – the extra years in the casks also bring out plenty more fragrant, oak-y spices.

The Macallan Quest range (originally released for the Travel Retail market) features four expressions showing off the many, many miles travelled to sources the casks to mature the Speyside whisky. The Lumina expression is made with whisky aged in sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks, as well as hogsheads. While sherry does get a good look-in with this one, it’s a much more vanilla and toffee-focussed dram.

Way back in the 1800s, founder George Smith managed to illegally distil his whisky in a remote Glenlivet Valley cottage using hand-crafted copper stills. To make it great, he evaded lawmen while smuggling his creation across the Scottish Highlands and the legacy lives on. After enduring the Great Depression and WWII to become one of the most acclaimed whisky brands available, the Scottish icon is now celebrating that rebellious history with The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Illicit Still.
