Speyside single malts are single malt Scotch whiskies, distilled in Strathspey, the area around the River Spey in Moray and Badenoch and Strathspey, in northeastern Scotland.
The two best-selling single malt whiskies in the world, The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, come from Speyside. Strathspey has the greatest number of distilleries of any of the whisky producing areas of Scotland. Dufftown alone has six working distilleries with an annual capacity of 40.4m litres of spirit.
Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail is a tourism initiative featuring eight Speyside distilleries and the Speyside Cooperage. Speyside also hosts an annual whisky festival known as “Spirit of Speyside”.
Speyside whiskies can generally be classified as light and grassy (e.g. Glenlivet) or rich and sweet (e.g. Macallan).

With fifty years in the blending biz, Billy certainly knows how to select and marry the best casks, and this 18-year-old expression is a superb testament to that talent. Originally added to the GlenAllachie core range in 2019, this 15-year-old single malt underwent a redesign in 2024. The whisky was treated to a finishing period in sherry casks before bottling. The casks in question were a combination of puncheons and hogsheads that previously held Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry. Master distiller Billy Walker described this expression as having an “exceptional balance of the distillery’s spirit and the influence of the sherry casks used during maturation.” We’d have to agree.

The flagship in GlenAllachie’s new core range, released in July 2018. Matured in a mixture of virgin oak, oloroso sherry and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, this has sweet flavours of honey, marzipan, bananas and butterscotch.
Prior to 2017, when the distillery was acquired by master distiller Billy Walker, GlenAllachie whisky was most commonly found in blends.

Hogshead casks that previously held this sherry style were used to age this whisky, bottled at 48% ABV without chill-filtration or additional colouring.

The previous release of a 21 Year Old Glenlivet was called Archive and it won pretty much every award going including a double gold medal in San Francisco, a gold at the IWSC, and best newcomer in a Chevy Chase movie at the Shepton Mallet film festival. Maybe not that last one. So there’s no pressure on this new expression. It’s been treated to a triple finish in first-fill oloroso sherry casks, Troncais oak Cognac, and colheita Port casks. The latter are essentially tawny Ports from a particular year. This rich trio has made the 21 a decadent blend of fruit and spice.

This rare and exclusive spirit embodies transparency, as the quality of the whiskey glitters in the Lalique crystal decanter that encloses our naturally dark spirit. A personification of the rich influence that sherry-aged oak barrels have on the spirit within.
MYSTERIOUS CHARACTERS AND RICH HERITAGE
The spirit is presented in a pristine crystal decanter. Individually numbered, it is a masterpiece by Lalique, the doyen of French glassmaking since 1888. The decanter’s six facets reflect and refract light, bringing the dark whiskey to life.
The inspiration comes from the six cornerstones of The Macallan, namely the winery, our curious little stills, the exceptional oak barrels, the sherry wine, the natural color and the mastery. Together they form the basis for the renowned quality and rich character of our whiskey.
