Speyside single malts are single malt Scotch whiskies, distilled in Strathspey, the area around the River Spey in Moray and Badenoch and Strathspey, in northeastern Scotland.
The two best-selling single malt whiskies in the world, The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, come from Speyside. Strathspey has the greatest number of distilleries of any of the whisky producing areas of Scotland. Dufftown alone has six working distilleries with an annual capacity of 40.4m litres of spirit.
Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail is a tourism initiative featuring eight Speyside distilleries and the Speyside Cooperage. Speyside also hosts an annual whisky festival known as “Spirit of Speyside”.
Speyside whiskies can generally be classified as light and grassy (e.g. Glenlivet) or rich and sweet (e.g. Macallan).

Tamnavulin Double Cask (70cl, 40%)
Tamnavulin Double Cask was the first release from the distillery since the 1990s! Over the past 20 or so years, the distillery changed hands from Invergordon Distillers to Whyte & MacKay, closed a few years later and reopened in 2007. Much of its single malt output is used in blends, but a few casks of single malt would sneak out as indie bottlings to allow us a rare taste of Tamnavulin – but now they’ve got their very own expression! They initially mature it in American oak barrels before treating them to a finishing period in Sherry casks.

Glenlivet 12 Year Old Illicit Still (70cl, 48%)
The story of The Glenlivet is an interesting one. Way back in the 1800s, founder George Smith managed to illegally distil his whisky in a remote Glenlivet Valley cottage using hand-crafted copper stills. To make it great, he evaded lawmen while smuggling his creation across the Scottish Highlands and the legacy lives on. After enduring the Great Depression and WWII to become one of the most acclaimed whisky brands available, the Scottish icon is now celebrating that rebellious history with The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Illicit Still.
This release is the first in a yearly limited edition series celebrating The Glenlivet’s past, each boasting new flavours and designs. The 12 Year Old Illicit Still itself is non-chill filtered and in keeping with drinks of old; has a higher than average ABV of 48%. You can enjoy it immediately, add it to your collection, save for the most special occasions or age it decades further as a collector’s item to sell down the track.
An echo of one man’s persistence in the face of mounting challenges, The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Illicit Still reminds us all to stay true to what you believe in. The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Illicit.

Benriach Quarter Cask (1L, 46%)
A litre bottle of Benriach Quarter Cask, which is first aged in bourbon barrels before a second maturation in bespoke quarter casks. The smaller casks allow for more interaction between the wood and whisky, amplifying those buttery, woody flavours we know and love.
Benriach Smoky Quarter Cask 1L, 46%
Benriach’s Smoky Quarter Cask celebrates the distillery’s use of peat, which began in the 1970s, harking back to whisky production of old, while breaking the conventional style of whisky from the Speyside region. The use of wood-rich Highland peat results in a sweet, smoky profile, and this expression is crafted with a balance of Benriach’s peated and unpeated spirit. Initially matured in bourbon barrels, the whisky is then transferred to bespoke quarter casks. The smaller cask size ensures greater interaction between the whisky and the oak, resulting in rewardingly rich layers of fruit, vanilla, and mellow wood smoke. Oh, and this is a litre bottle originally released for travel retail, so, even more, to go round!

The Original is a single malt made with mainland peat from St. Fergus, a sweeter, grassier variety than found on the coast. From the first series of whiskies by Meikle Tòir, a peated whisky brand made at GlenAllachie Distillery with the assistance of expert whisky maker Billy Walker, whose influence can certainly be seen here with this innovative cask profile. The single malt Scotch whisky, peated to 35ppm (using mainland St. Fergus peat, a sweeter variety than its coastal counterparts) and fermented for a lengthy 160 hours fermentation, was aged in American oak bourbon barrels followed by Chinquapin virgin oak casks, a bold barrel that imparts big, sweet, and rich flavours.
Meikle Tòir The Sherry One (70cl, 48%)
Meikle Tòir The Sherry One is a peated whisky made at GlenAllachie Distillery using mainland peat from St. Fergus. The whisky was peated to 35ppm and benefited from a lengthy fermentation period of 160 hours to create a fruity, complex spirit that could stand up to ageing in sherry casks, which is exactly what it did. Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry puncheons, to be exact, following an initial maturation in American oak bourbon barrels. One for fans of smoke and sherry.

Cardhu 12 Year Old 200th Anniversary (70cl, 40%)
Cardhu Distillery celebrates its 200th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the distillery is holding an event celebrating the women of Cardhu, and has released a limited-edition expression.
The free event, A Celebration of Cardhu’s Pioneering Women, will be held on International Women’s Day (Friday 8 March). Guests will experience a guided tasting of the anniversary bottling and hear from a panel of experts. The event will also feature a welcome drink, cocktail masterclass, and live music.
The anniversary bottling is 12-year-old Cardhu matured exclusively in ex-wine casks, a first for the distillery. The expression is inspired by the pioneers behind the brand, Helen and Elizabeth Cumming, who are remembered for “defying traditions and pushing boundaries” in the ages of illicit distilling.
The bottle’s packaging depicts Helen Cumming with a red flag, signalling to conspirators to hide illicit stills from authorities.
Roselyn Burnett, Cardhu Distillery brand home manager and event speaker, said: “Cardhu has a history of pioneering women at its forefront, something unheard of when the distillery began 200 years ago. It took innovation and courage to go against the grain in the way the Cumming family did, and with this in our heritage it was only right we did something bold to celebrate such an anniversary.
As a perfect example of the Speyside style of whisky, it was exciting to work with our blending and distilling experts to create an adapted iteration of what people expect from our distillery, while perfecting the liquid to ensure it retains those classic notes which people look for from Cardhu. As one of the few places in the world to stock this limited release, we’re looking forward to welcoming guests who have made the journey to visit us and buy a bottle, be that from Elgin or Ecuador.”
Eve Murphy, whisky specialist and panel expert, who led on the development of the anniversary edition, added: “Myself and the team at Cardhu have worked hard to make the 200-year-anniversary bottle something which speaks to the inspiring example which Helen and Elizabeth set two centuries ago. Never afraid to test boundaries, the women who were, and remain, a huge part of Cardhu have once again achieved something special with this beautiful red-wine-cask edition.”

Initially the single malt was matured in American oak barrels before being transferred to casks which previously held rye whiskey from Kentucky for a finishing period. Eventually it was bottled at nine years old at 48% ABV, full of sufficiently spicy notes from the cask finish.
Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength 1L, 60%
Gelenfarclas 105 Cask Strength doesn’t carry an age statement, but there are any suggestions that it is matured for 8-10 years in a combination of both ex-sherry an ex-bourbon barrels. Drying and rich it makes for a superb dram, one the Malt Maniacs rated as the best „Bang for your buck“ whisky in 2004. It is an excellent whisky with aromas of spices, citrus fruits and oloroso sherry. It introduces a world of flavours and make a fiery and strong experience.
Glenfarclas 105 is a superb cask strength whisky, with a history that can be traced to 1968. When the original incarnation was released that year, Glenfarclas became the first distillery to release a barrel proof single malt whisky.
The bottling was eventually re-named to 105, referring to its alcohol content in British Proof, which equates now to 60% ABV.
The 105 doesn’t carry an age statement presently, making it rare among Glenfarclas bottlings. Although, there are suggestions that it is matured for 8-10 years in a combination of both ex-sherry and ex-bourbon barrels.
Drying, assertive and richly spiced, the 105 makes for a superb dram, one the Malt Maniacs rated as the best “Bang for your buck” whisky in 2004. Add a drop of water if you please to explore its depth – and don’t be put off by that ABV, there’s plenty of flavour here to enjoy.

An independently bottled 7 year old Auchroisk single malt, released as part of the Parkmore Selection (based in the Coleburn warehouse – wonderful stuff to hear for those of us who love hearing about closed distilleries not just being left to rot or getting smashed into pieces). It was initially aged in bourbon casks before enjoying a finishing period in casks that previously held Madeira wine.
