The first of three new releases from Bladnoch in early 2017 to celebrate the reopening of this Lowland distillery. Although it doesn’t carry an age statement, it’s said to be made up of whiskies that are a minimum or 8 years old and well as older, rarer whiskies. First fill Californian red wine and bourbon casks were used for maturation, whilst ‘Samsara’ appropriately enough means ‘rebirth’.
It’s the 2022 release of Bladnoch’s 11 Year Old single malt! This expression spends its eponymous 11 year maturation exclusively in ex-bourbon casks, before being bottled up at 46.7% ABV. Excellent stuff, packed with character.
Smoky single malt from the Bladnoch Distillery here, dubbed Alinta, after the indigenous Australian word found in several Southern Australian languages for “fire” and “flames”. You can see the connection there – smoky whisky, “fire”. This expression was drawn from a combination of first-fill bourbon casks and first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, making for a richly-flavoursome whisky.
Orkney’s Highland Park has once again bottled up a brill single malt at cask strength and bestowed it a pleasingly straightforward name – feast your eyes upon Highland Park Cask Strength Release No.2! This particular edition was made with a combination of sherry seasoned European and American oak casks, alongside a few ex-bourbon casks, selected by master whisky maker Gordon Motion. Sitting at a robust 63.9% ABV, this one offers up plenty of fruit, vanilla, and smoke notes to enjoy.

The first release from BenRiach’s Peated Cask Strength series (in the same vein as their unpeated Cask Strength releases) is made with whiskies drawn from Oloroso Sherry casks and bourbon barrels.
Glen Scotia’s Victoriana sees the Campbeltown distillery’s single malt drawn from casks with a particularly heavy char profile, imparting plenty of rich, roasty-toasty notes. This, however, is the Victoriana Cask Strength expression. It’s obvious what the difference here is – it’s bottled at cask strength, a robust 54.2% ABV, which helps bolster those aforementioned roasty-toasty notes.

It’s the 10th batch of Glengoyne’s marvellous Cask Strength single malt! Matured in a selection of refill, oloroso sherry, and bourbon casks and bottled without chill filtration at a robust 59.5% ABV, it’s brimming with generous layers of cakey spice, nutty malt, honeyed fruit, and oaken vanilla.
Golden in colour and honeyed on the palate, The Nectar is made by finishing Glenmorangie single malt in casks used to age some of the world’s great sweet wines. These include Sauternes and Monbazillac from France, Moscatel from Spain and Tokaji from Hungary. A fitting successor to the discontinued Nectar D’or and an excellent after-dinner dram.
It was the memory of entering a French pastry shop that prompted Glenmorangie head of whisky creation Dr Bill Lumsden to create the brilliant Glenmorangie The Nectar D’Or. It’s a single malt that was aged for 14 years in bourbon casks that was then finished for two more years in a new combination of great sweet white wine casks. This includes French Sauternes and Monbazillac to bring notes of orchard fruit and buttery pastries, Spanish Moscatel for sweet, syrupy dessert flavours, and Hungarian Tokaji barrels for nuttier, honeyed elements.

This peated single malt from Taiwan’s Nantou distillery joins the World of Smoke series from That Boutique-y Whisky Company. Matured for five years in a bourbon hogshead, it’s packed with coastal, sooty smoke, oily malt, and apricot sweetness.
Batch 3 is a release of 308 bottles.
Dalmore 12 Years Old Sherry Cask Select combines Dalmore’s house style with a delicious sherry influence. The single malt first aged for 10 years in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels. It was then finished in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks from three historic cooperages in Jerez de la Frontera, creating a sweet and elegant character. The whisky has aromas of caramelised orange, ginger and sultanas, laced with honey. The palate brings dark chocolate and crushed almonds with a dusting of cinnamon. Flavours of sweet mangos, panna cotta and lemon sponge cake linger on the finish. This 2023 release has an updated purple design that catches the eye.
This Caol Ila single malt has been given the sherry cask treatment, courtesy of the crew at Darkness! Matured for 14 years, the whisky was treated to a finish in an oloroso sherry octave resulting in heaps of citrus and spice to support the earthy, peaty salinity at its core.
From the Glencadam distillery, situated in the Highlands, comes this 14 year old single malt whisky, which has spent the last 16 months of its maturation Oloroso sherry casks, imparting a very noticeable sweet sherry character. The expression is non-chill-filtered and with no added colouring.

While the Tomintoul distillery is well-known for its laid-back expression (earning the nickname “the gentle dram”), it also produces a line of heavily-peated whiskies released under the Old Ballantruan name. A limited-edition single malt from Kilchoman, Casado takes its name from the Portuguese word for marriage. Initially matured in 38 first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, it was then married in a pair of Portuguese red wine vats for two years before it was bottled. Aromas of intense campfire smoke, ripe plums, cherries, peaches, marzipan and sea spray fill the nose, complemented by notes of black pepper, salty peat smoke, apricot, lemon, stewed plums, apricot jam and rich smoke throughout the palate and lingering in the finish.
Part of Diageo’s Distillers Edition range comes a 2001 vintage single malt Scotch whisky from Caol Ila, which has been matured in American oak and finished in Moscatel wine casks. A limited edition release.
A much sought-after single malt with the massive peat-smoke that’s typical of southern Islay – but also offering richness and a dryness that turns it into a truly interesting tipple. The 16 year old has truly become a benchmark Islay dram from the Lagavulin distillery.

The second whisky in the Balblair Collection, Balblair 15 Year Old is a full-bodied, velvety single malt that has been matured in ex-bourbon casks and finished in first-fill Spanish oak butts. This creates a rich, sweet whisky with spicy aromas of honey, gingerbread and prunes. The palate is velvety-smooth and full of dark chocolate, tropical fruit and warm spice notes.

A special release of Isle of Jura’s 18-year-old whisky, originally only available in travel retail. It was initially matured in American-oak ex-bourbon casks before a finish in ‘Premier grand cru classé barriques’ – casks that used to hold top-end Bordeaux wine. Master blender Richard Paterson knows his wine casks, and here he’s added layers of rich spice and soft red fruit to Jura’s malty and spicy spirit.
The Macallan Quest might sound like some sort of epic journey to throw an evil chime hoop into a massive sherry cask, but it’s actually a Travel Retail bottling of Macallan single malt drawn from four varieties of cask – bourbon casks, sherry-seasoned European oak casks, sherry-seasoned American oak casks, and hogsheads. The name is a reference to the lengths taken by the Macallan team to source the best oak to mature whisky in.
Also available in 70cl.
At the peak of the Jura distillery’s core range (relaunched in mid-2018) sits the Isle of Jura 18 Year Old. This expression aged in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels before enjoying a finishing period in Premier Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux barrels, imparting a rich fruitiness.
The final bottling from the Viking Legend series, Valfather was named after the Norse god Odin. It’s the most peated whisky to date from Highland Park, a style designed to mimic Odin’ power. Valfather was matured in refill casks in order to balance the peatiness and also because the brand supposedly wanted to mirror the ethereal and lighter feel of Valhalla, Odin’s hall. It was bottled at 47% ABV without any additional colouring.
Danish designer Jim Lyngvild returned to help create the distinctive packaging, the inspiration of which was the ancient picture stones from Stora Hammars in Gotland, Sweden.

Extra-matured in superior French barriques which previously held wines such as those of the Muscat and Sémillion grapes, the delectably rich single malt whisky honours the splendour of the Cadboll Cup. With its deep golden hue, Project XX embodies the warm, fruity character of a classic Glenfiddich whisky with hints of apple blossom, summer fruits and ripe pear. But its multiple personalities are revealed with hints of sweet candyfloss, cinnamon spice, almonds and rich port tannins with the odd whisper of liquorice. Deep and mellow, the finish is long lasting with a lingering sweet oakiness.
This is the 15 year old single malt Scotch whisky from Glen Scotia in the Campbeltown region, released in 2015 as part of a redesign for their range. The distillers use specially selected American oak casks to age this expression, which compliment the fruit-forward and subtly coastal whisky rather well.
This single malt Scotch whisky from Glenfiddich’s core range was matured in a mix of Oloroso sherry and bourbon casks.
The 18-year-old Single Malt Scotch Glenfiddich whisky matures in a combination of ex-sherry Oloroso barrels and then matures in ex-bourbon oak American barrels. Glenfiddich is a robust and exceptional whiskey. This result is not only due to the age of 18, but also due to the care, attention and especially the knowledge of whiskey distillation, which is served from generation to generation. Each barrel was individually numbered and closely monitored until the bottles were filled.
An Oa is named after the Mull of Oa in the south west of Islay, which offers the Kildaton coast (where Ardbeg distillery is situated) some protection from the worst the Atlantic has to offer! As such, An Oa is intended to show a more approachable side to Ardbeg single malt that’s as rounded as the Oa peninsular, without losing the characteristic distillery style. In the summer of 2017 this became the first addition to Ardbeg’s core range in over a decade.
Maturation took place in a combination of casks including Pedro Ximénez, charred virgin oak and ex-bourbon, which were all brought together to marry in Dr. Bill Lumsden’s new ‘Gathering Vat’!
This whisky has been matured for 14 years in traditional oak casks before being transferred to Caribbean rum casks to impart some extra flavour. This process has created a well-rounded and drinkable whisky with notes of fruit and vanilla.
The sought-after Loch Gorm releases are named after the body of water overlooked by Kilchoman distillery. This 2024 edition was matured exclusively in oloroso sherry butts from Bodega José y Miguel Martín and offers a rich and smoky treat for Islay whisky fans. You can expect waves of barbeque smoke on the nose, which are met with cacao nibs and figs. The peat persists on the palate and is punctuated by honey roasted cashews, cinnamon and salted toffee.
This 18 Years Old version from the Bowmore distillery has been left to sleep the finest Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks, transferring notes of bitter-sweet orange peel and nuts to the whisky.
This six-year-old single malt from Aberlour joins the Darkness collection, meaning you can expect plenty of sherry cask goodness here. This one finished its time maturing in an oloroso sherry octave. The small size of the cask ensures greater interaction between the whisky and the wood, and this single malt is brimming with notes of burnt sugar and cream, sweet spice, and candied nuts.
Another delicious six-year-old Aberlour single malt joins the Darkness range, and this one was drawn from a custom-made octave cask that previously held Pedro Ximénez sherry. Prepare for rich layers of floral honey, nutty malt, and creamy chocolate here.
That Boutique-y Whisky Company has been in the indie bottling biz for over a decade, and it’s safe to say, those folks know their stuff when it comes to stalking a prize whisky. Now with a Boutique-y “core” range, there’s a chance to enjoy some of these treasures on repeat… and in grown-up, 70cl size bottles!
This is a peated single malt hailing from the Scottish Highlands, matured for a generous 18 years in a host of bourbon, oloroso, and Pedro Ximénez casks. Boasting vibrant layers of herbaceous peat and sooty smoke, with meaty malt, juicy fruit, and rich old oak, it’s a real belter.
An exceptional single malt matured in three equally exceptional casks. Using a three cask maturation, The Dalmore The Trio is a captivating marriage of rare and exceptional casks. The liquid is initially matured in American white oak ex-bourbon casks. This gives its first base of soft vanilla and honey notes. The whisky is apportioned between first fill ex-bourbon casks, 10 year old Tawny port pipes and 30 year old Matusalem sherry casks. The three parts are then brought back together to harmonise.”

Birthday Blend is made up of well-aged single malt from Islay and characterful grain whisky from Edinburgh, creating aromas of buttery grains, lemon cream, green melon, black pepper, brine and beach campfire smoke that fill the nose. The palate offers notes of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum, papaya, lime zest, black pepper, spicy rye bread, soft smoke and a pinch of smoke that linger in the finish.

A 15-year-old Glenallachie single malt, matured in a combination of Pedro Ximenez and oloroso sherry casks, creating a smooth, rich character. Aromas of raisins, butterscotch and sweet spices fill the nose, and the palate offers notes of dark chocolate, orange peel, banana, raisins and caramel.

The 14th edition of 100% Islay was matured in ex-bourbon barrels and sherry casks, offering a creamy and fruity character, underpinned by peat smoke. Aromas of toffee-apple, candied pineapple, and ginger cake fill the nose, complemented by a fresh peat smoke and hints of stewed fruit.

After an initial 11 years in a refill bourbon barrel, the whisky was re-racked in a fresh first-fill bourbon barrel to bathe for its final years, ensuring that the biscuity malt shines alongside layers of zesty citrus and chalky grist.
Batch 18 is a release of 418 bottles.
The excellent Kilchoman Small Batch Release is a limited edition whisky that uses the finest casks available for maturation. This exclusive small batch release includes some whiskies matured in ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and STR casks.
STR casks are an innovation not found in many distilleries and were created by the late Jim Swan. The abbreviation stands for ‘shaved, toasted and recharred’.
Each cask previously contained red wine, and to tame some of the overpowering red wine flavours, the casks are shaved on the inside to expose the active wood. This is then toasted to break down the harder oak elements such as cellulose. The barrel is then charred to create an active charring layer that improves the interaction with the maturing spirit.
The bottles were bottled at 48,7 % alcohol and no chill filtration or colouring was used in the production process. The whisky is presented in a gift box.

The folks at Signatory picked out a fab pair of casks here, containing delicious single malt from Auchroisk! Matured in a pair of hogsheads between March 2009 and February 2022, this 12 year old expression is a cracking example of Auchroisk’s mellow style.

Launched in 2015, the Port Askaig 100° Proof is a big, smoky single malt Scotch whisky from an undisclosed Islay distillery. This is bottled at 57.1% ABV – which is 100° Proof in a traditional system of alcohol content measurement (different from 100 proof, which you’re much more likely to see on American bottlings).
This is the fourth and final release in Tomatin’s French Collection is this cracking Cognac cask finished expression! Like the rest of the range (which includes Sauternes, Rivesaltes, and Monbazillac cask finished whiskies), this is a 12 year old single malt distilled in 2008. However, as we alluded to earlier, this one has enjoyed a finishing period in Cognac casks. This has imparted lip-smacking helpings of red fruit, toasted nut, and festive spice notes. It’s also rather fascination to compare the four releases in the series to see the impact the different French drinks have had on the great Scotch whisky at their cores.

A fruity and rich 12-year-old whisky marrying bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks.
A creamy, sweet single malt, The Sweet Toast of American Oak is the first whisky in the Balvenie Stories collection. Finished in heavily-toasted virgin American oak casks from Kentucky, it is even fruitier than normal. Sweet, malty aromas of fudge, citrus and oaky vanilla mingle with spicy ginger and warm cinnamon on the nose. The palate initially offers notes of candied orange peel, vanilla toffee and butterscotch, developing slowly into flavours of melted brown sugar, blossom honey and rich oak spice.

16 year old single malt from the fantastic Aberfeldy distillery, unveiled in the latter half of 2015 as part of the Last Great Malts series. This expression is finished in Oloroso Sherry casks, imparting juicy sweetness to the whisky.

This expression shows great depth of character and finesse, a harmonious combination of whisky and oak. The 2021-release of 16-year-old single malt from Fettercairn is a soft, sweet single malt with notes of vanilla, ginger, raisins, peaches, honey, banana and chocolate throughout the palate and lingering in the finish.
This stunning expression from Islay’s Ardbeg distillery on the Kildalton Coast is named after a nearby loch (pronounced “Oog-a-dal”). It’s the perfect example of how sweet and savoury notes can work together spectacularly – you’ll find Ardbeg’s maritime salinity intact here, combined with dried fruit notes imparted by time spent in sherry casks. Kind of like when you mix sweet popcorn and salty popcorn together, it results in something absolutely wonderful.
