Single malt Scotch whisky is one of the most revered spirits in the world. It has such scope for variation, it can offer complexity or simplicity, unbridled power or a subtle whisper. To legally be called a single malt Scotch, the whisky must be distilled at a single distillery in Scotland, in a copper pot still from nothing other than malted barley, yeast and water. It must then be aged in an oak cask for at least three years and a day, and be bottled at no less than 40% abv.

Wormtubs are classic bits of distilling equipment and the distinctive, heavy, robust flavours they create are prized by whisky fans. Yet, those long copper coiled tubes housed in cold water in a large vat are sadly too rare these days as many favoured more modern and efficient condensers. They’re the vinyl of the whisky world.
This expression takes some beautiful whisky that was at least ten years old from a distillery in Speyside that uses wormtubs (that we can’t name, but we think there will be a few among you who can work it out), reracked into first-fill sherry casks before bottling. This is the third release from Wolfburn’s Kylver Series – each one features a different from from the runic alphabet found on the Kylver stone (one of the earliest forms of alphabet discovered). Emblazoned upon this bottling is the rune meaning thurs, which meant “thorn” to some, while to others it meant “giant”. This limited edition expression shows off a bourbon-cask-lead flavour profile, with a whisper of Sherry sneaking in later on..

The second release in a range of small batch single malt Scotch whisky releases from the Wolfburn distillery in Thurso. Similar to Batch No.128, this was matured in half-sized, first-fill bourbon barrel, but in contrast to previous release, Batch No.270 was made with unpeated spirit, giving all those yummy vanilla-y elements from the small casks centre stage. 6,000 bottles were produced.
