Macallan defines their unique art of whisky making through an unusual spectrum of selected casks for Edition No.1. This distinctive high quality single malt is made from whiskies aged in eight different styles of European and American oak casks, and each cask was chosen by the Macallan Master Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgarno, with the idea to create a rich and complex whisky. Matured in 58% Butts, 23% Hogshead and 19% Puncheon casks, it delivers a palate that is light and soft and finishes rich and dark.
This wooden box release was produced by Edrington Taiwan for the Lunar New Year gifting period in 2016.

If you’re not very familiar with Oban, it’s a whisky producer in the Highlands that sits on the edge of Scotland’s western coast that’s known for its clean and intensely fruity Scotch. In our opinion, both provide equally important services. One protects the realm from raiders and worse (no spoilers, people), while the other makes very tasty whisky for us to drink. Very intense, this vintage rum, aged for 7 years in Fiji and 2 years in Ferrand casks in France, is rich and round, with notes of buttery vanilla, caramel, cocoa and ginger ale as well as quince, hazelnuts and coconut.

As with all Plantation rums, this has the usual distinctive netting wrapped around the bottles – this is great from a branding/marketing point of view. I do like that Plantation have included some information about the rum’s ageing process, although there is no info about how the rum was actually created i.e. type of still used. There are some tasting notes, although stating that the nose is “complex, earthy, rum of pure cane juice proudly showing characteristics from ancient noble farms” is not particularly insightful nor useful. The additives are not directly referenced either.

Undoubtedly anything but a classic whiskey, already on the nose can be seen that you can expect here neither a single malt nor a boring standard blend. As a liquorice friend who appreciates sweet, sticky liquorice liquor almost 😉 as well as a beautiful Irishman or a hefty sweet Scot, I recognize the best of both worlds here. As a whiskey, I would give the Cutty Sark Black no 30 points, but he is too little “pure”, too little deep, not enough aromatic. As an alcoholic liquorice drink, however, the 77 points that I simply give out here are more than just earned.

Just like in the 15 Years that I reviewed earlier I find a peculiar Aroma in the 12 Years that I can’t quite place. It’s something that reminds me of Cooked Vegetables with a little added Sulphur but that doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it. Anyway, it’s clear that there are some Refill Macallan Ex-Sherry casks in the mix. The rest is mostly Glenrothes I think while it’s very hard or even almost impossible to detect Highland Park. Is there the faintest puff of Smoke in the background? It could be but I’m not gonna put a lot of money on that. On the Nose, this Famous Grouse has Sweet notes but there’s a slightly Sour touch to it as well. I find Toasted Barley, Toast with a mix of Butter and Margarine, light Honey, Toffee, Caramel, Hay, Dried Apricot, Apples, Plums, Nuts, light Vanilla, Orange, Nougat and hints of Espresso and Milk Chocolate. The Alcohol is not fully integrated. At this price level, it’s not at all bad but objectively speaking there’s not too much of interest going on.

Its unique complexity is achieved by expertly blending an extremely diverse, but complementary range of malt whiskies, each of which has been matured for a minimum of 12 years and some for much longer. The Explorers’ Club Collection which was released over 2012 and 2013 to honour the Johnnie Walker Whisky Traders has always been scheduled for Duty Free stores only. We’ve managed to secure tiny quantities from a secret source in order to satisfy CYPRIOT followers of the brand who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to obtain these limited editions. So far the Trade Routes series has included The Spice Road, The Gold Route and The Royal Route. However, there’s a missing link that’s arguably the most collectable of all.
Jan van den Ende , writing for ‘Best Shot Whisky Reviews’ explains, “It is likely that The Adventurer was the first of a new series within The Explorer’s Club Collection. However a law suite was launched by the existing real life Explorer’s Club that included such legendary names as Buzz Aldrin and Sir Ernest Shackleton. The Club funds scientific Research and Education and did not want their name used for commercial purposes without their permission. A judge ruled in favour of the Club in August 2014 which forced Diageo to rethink their strategy with regards to the Explorer’s Club Collection.
