Johnnie Walker has created three limited edition bottles for its Red Label, Black Label, and Gold Label Reserve Whiskies to celebrate the Diageo-owned brand’s 200th anniversary. On the usual bottles, a slanted label features the blended Scotch’s name/color, but that has been updated to an opaque wrap that covers the entire bottle. Don’t worry, the Whisky inside the bottles remains the same.
“These limited edition bottles give a bold new look to our most iconic whiskies and perfectly celebrate Johnnie Walker’s depth of character as we celebrate this incredible 200-year milestone,” said Ali Reynolds, Johnnie Walker GB brand ambassador “This striking new design is sure to stand out on shelf and appeal to both enthusiasts and those who are new to the Scotch scene. The 200th anniversary celebrates the year, 1820, when John Walker bought an Italian warehouse, grocery, and wine and spirits shop on the High Street in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.

It’s been a big year of releases for Johnnie Walker as it celebrates its 200th Anniversary. Back in July, the blended Scotch brand unveiled three limited edition Whiskies: Blue Label Legendary Eight, Celebratory Blend, and Bicentenary Blend as well as a limited edition bottle design. Each anniversary release celebrates part of the famed brand’s two century journey. All four releases are expected to hit shelves across the globe in October.

This limited-edition bottle design of Johnnie Walker Red Label is inspired by the Netflix series Money Heist. The bottle marks the finale of the series and will attract the shows fans with its label depicting several of the show’s characters and props along with the brands signature Striding Man. The design also features ‘hidden messages’, including the final words of one of the show’s main characters, only revealed when placing the bottle under a UV light.
La Casa de Papel, also known as Money Heist, is a Netflix show all about the criminal mastermind recognized as “The Professor.” The show is a crime drama and thriller that draws people in and hooks them. To honor the show’s final season, Johnnie Walker has created a limited edition label with Netflix, designed by Bulletproof, that encourages fans to join the movement. Not only does the red-colored bottle work for both Netflix, Money Heist, and Johnnie Walker, but the bottle is also UV activated, revealing hidden messages. A fun design with a lovely hidden twist.

The second addition to the Johnnie Walker Explorers’ Club Series – “The Gold Route” was launched in 2013 as a Travel Retail exclusive.
Developed as a ‘luxury’ whisky, Walker’s Master Blender, Jim Beveridge describes this as an, “exotic mix of bananas, mango and pitaya,” with a taste of “pineapples, guava, passionfruit and raisins, all balanced perfectly by deep charred peaty notes in keeping with the signature smoky Johnnie Walker flavour”.

Johnnie Walker Explorers’ Club Collection The Spice Road (1L, 40%)

This is the first in a new series that’s exclusive to travel retail. We’ve managed to secure a small allocation from a secret source.
“The Spice Road ” was created by master blender, Jim Beveridge, to evoke the aromas of Asia. It’s one of a series collectively known as “The Explorers Club Collection'” in reference to John Walker’s pioneering travel around the world to establish markets for his whiskies back in the 1800s. The Spice Road is the first in a sub-series named the Trade Route Series – the whiskies are inspired by the cultural richness that can be found on three of the world’s great trade routes.
Spice Road will be followed by ‘The Gold Route”, with tropical flavours designed to reflect the aromas of the Caribbean and Latin America, due for release in March or April next year. Finally, Johnnie Walker ”The Royal Silk Route”, the most expensive of the line-up, will hit airport shelves in May or June. We’ll see if we can source these releases as they go to market.

The expression draws on up to 18 whiskies from Scotland’s main whisky making regions, including classic Speyside malts from Cardhu, Glen Elgin and Auchroisk bringing a sweet and elegant character. Fruity Highland malts like Blair Athol bring a real complexity and island malts bring their characteristic subtle smokiness. New for 2018, but not scheduled for release in Australia is this new JW expression, inspired by the iconic Black Label. It’s No.7 in the experimental series, and set exclusively for Travel Retail. The 12-year-old blend is described as “a smooth-sipping dark whisky with notes of vanilla and smoke, raisins and a warming finish of dark chocolate”. Composed of whiskies from Blair Athol, Cardhu and Strathmill distilleries, among others and finished in former Sherry casks for up to nine months, it was a collaborative effort between whisky maker, Aimée Gibson and Johnnie Walker’s Master Blender, Jim Beveridge.
With previous bottlings including wine and rum cask finishes, and even an Espresso Roast expression, Blenders’ Batch whiskies are the result of over a hundred ongoing experiments. At this price you can afford to buy one to collect and another to drink – perfect on its own or mixed with ginger ale.

This aged version of the classic Red Label enjoys a similar cult following. Its unique complexity is achieved by expertly blending an extremely diverse, but complementary range of malt whiskies, each of which has been matured for a minimum of 12 years and some for much longer. In total, up to 40 malts and grain whiskies make up the Black Label blend. Island and Islay malts deliver spice, richness and lingering peat. Speyside malts make an important contribution to the depth of taste, bringing smoky malt, fruitiness, apple freshness and a rich sherry character to the blend. At the heart of Black Label lies 12 year old Cardhu, an outstanding malt from Speyside, which imparts silkiness, a characteristic which has made it famous as a single malt.
To date, Black Label has won more international awards for excellence than any other deluxe whisky. In the 1880s, Old Highland won medals in Sydney and Paris. Over 100 years later, in 1994, Black Label picked up gold medals at the 1994 Monde Selection Awards and the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), where it also won a trophy for Best Blended Whisky.
