Islay whisky is Scotch whisky made on Islay one of the southernmost of the Inner Hebridean Islands located off the west coast of Scotland. Islay is one of five whisky distilling localities and regions in Scotland whose identity is protected by law. There are nine active distilleries and the industry is the island’s second largest employer after agriculture. Islay is a centre of “whisky tourism”, and hosts a “Festival of Malt and Music” known as Fèis Ìle each year on the last week of May, with events and tastings celebrating the cultural heritage of the island.

A high-ABV variation on the classic Smokehead Islay single malt, Smokehead High Voltage is described as an “all-out attack” on your senses by its producer. Which, y’know, sounds pretty intense. If you’re a fan of heavily-peated whisky, you’re in for a treat.

Also, yes, it was incredibly hard to resist making an Electric Six reference when writing this bottling note.

Sheep Dip Islay Blended Malt (70cl, 40%)

A variation of the wonderful Sheep Dip Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, made with malt whiskies from the island of Islay. Plenty of classic Islay character runs through its core, and it’s still adorned with the picture of a sheep on the label, so all’s good here! The name Sheep Dip comes from the olden days when people in the West Country used to make their own whisky and hide it in barrels marked “SD” to avoid paying taxes on it.

A great whisky made from 16 malt whiskies aged from 8 to 21 years. Jim Murray describes Sheep Dip as “young and sprightly”. Great retro packaging too. The only thing is, the picture of the sheep on the bottle doesn’t actually look like a sheep, it actually looks like an angry spaniel with horns.

Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire 10 Year Old (70cl, 40%)

  • ( 0 Customer Review )

This right here is a 10-year-old single malt from an undisclosed distillery on Islay, with 25% of it having been finished in first-fill oloroso sherry casks, and bestowed the decidedly descriptive name Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire. If those four words (and three ampersands) aren’t quite enough of an explanation of what this expression is all about, here are a few more: stripped-back, smoky, complex, a bit sherried, balanced, coastal. Yeah, that should do it. Great for people who love uncompromising Islay whisky and sans-serif fonts.

Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire & Sherry Casks 10 Year Old (70cl, 40%)

Peat and sherry is a great combo, though sometimes it can be a bit like a shouting match between a foghorn and a washing machine full of pots and pans. Thankfully, this one shows off a welcome harmony between the two. It’s a marvellous variation of Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire, featuring the same smoky 10 year old Islay single malt, though instead of just 25% of it being finished in sherry casks, the entirety of the whisky was finished in them. The powerfully peaty notes at its core are mellowed by just enough sherry sweetness, making for a superbly well-balanced flavour profile.

A senior member of the Seaweed & Aeons family, this is a cask-strength edition of its heavily peated 18-year-old Highland single malt. Bottled at a hearty 54.6%, it’s a big, bold sipper. With a good portion matured in sherry casks, it boasts softly sweet notes of stone fruits and toasted nuts among vibrant layers of herbaceous coastal peat smoke, and dense, meaty malt.

Whether you’re a fan of the younger age statements in this range and looking to explore older whiskies, or you’re interested in cask strengths, this is one for you! Also, a fab find if you’re looking for a gift for a member of some kind of ampersand appreciation society.

Hailing from an undisclosed Islay distillery, 25% of this single malt enjoyed a stay in sherry casks, imparting a satisfying sweetness to the robustly smoky, earthy whisky. Weighing in at 55.6% ABV, there’s plenty of added depth and intensity to be found in this full-bodied cask strength expression… you might like to punctuate with a dash of water or a cube of ice to open up all that flavour.

Laphroaig The 1815 No Box 70cl, 48%

Notice this bottle it is without original box.

A single malt created by distillery manager, John Campbell, to honour the master craftsmen who have shaped Laphroaig over the past two centuries. This single malt was first left to rest in first-fill, over-charred ex-bourbon barrels, before being transferred to large, new European oak hogsheads – which have never been used by Laphroaig until now.

The 1815 combines notes of peat smoke, toasted fruits and oiled wood.

Laphroaig Select (70cl, 40%)

This Laphroaig is created from carefully selected casks of each of our key styles. Mostly, these are historic styles, with one notable addition: the heart of the spirit is drawn from a final maturation in American oak casks rarely used for scotch whisky.

With spirit selected by our master distiller from Quarter Cask, our PX Cask and Triple Wood (Oloroso sherry) and a final addition of 10 Year Old, it represents a subtle blending of peat, oak and sweetness.

Bottled at natural colour, the result is an exquisite Laphroaig with our trademark peat reek matched by an additional layer of complexity and depth brought about by the fusion of the maturation styles and different oaks.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask (70cl, 48%)

In stock
  • ( 0 Customer Review )

This expression offers an irresistible doubling of flavour due to the double maturation in two casks made of American oak.

Still-maturing whisky from our standard ex-bourbon barrels is transferred to quarter casks and left to rest in our warehouse just a stone throw from the Atlantic shore.

This process represents Laphroaig breathing new life into a once-defunct tradition: the use of the smaller cask size, which ensures increased contact with the oak, creating a soft and velvety edge to complement Laphroaig distinctive peatiness.

On the nose the sensation is toffee and caramel, caused by the vanillas and tannins of the American oak, plus a dryness from the wood oil.

The finish is long and alternates between this sweetness and smoke.
