Hopkins Reserve from Speyburn was created as a tribute to John Hopkins, founder of the distillery. The single malt was aged in American oak bourbon casks which had also previously held peated whisky, imparting a subtle smokiness. The whisky endeavours to celebrate all things Speyside, and has been made using fresh spring water from the Granty Burn. The one litre bottle was released for the Travel Retail market.

Speyburn 10 was, until 2008, the only Speyburn official bottling readily available. This dram, which hits the lighter side of the flavour map, will appear to many as the epitome of a Speyside whisky, with plenty of honeyed cereal, vanilla, light oak, floral and toffee’d notes.

A rather stunning well-sherried single malt from GlenDronach. Distilled in 1993, the whisky was laid to rest in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks. Twenty-five glorious GlenDronach years passed, then master blender Dr. Rachel Barrie selected the casks to create this expression, which has been bottled at 48.2% ABV. The Spanish oak in which it rested has imparted a rich golden hue to the liquid – and, of course, an exceptional flavour profile.

If you haven’t seen the show, essentially The Night’s Watch hold and guard the Wall, an immense ice structure which separates the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms from the lands beyond. If you’re not very familiar with Oban, it’s a whisky producer in the Highlands that sits on the edge of Scotland’s western coast that’s known for its clean and intensely fruity Scotch. In our opinion, both provide equally important services. One protects the realm from raiders and worse (no spoilers, people), while the other makes very tasty whisky for us to drink. The limited-edition Scotch you see here is Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old, a Highland stalwart from a distillery that was said to be a favourite of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and is conveniently situated close to Balmoral Castle. Combined with its proximity to Cairngorms National Park, an area that contains one quarter of Scotland’s native forest and plenty of deer, it’s little wonder that it was paired with House Baratheon, a house with plenty of royal connections and whose sigil features a rampant stag.

The Duthac comes from Glenmorangie’s range of expressions originally released for the Travel Retail market. This particular single malt, name after St. Duthac whose resting place sits at the centre of the Royal Burgh of Tain, has been part finished in Pedro Ximénez Sherry and virgin oak casks before being bottled at 43% ABV. Plenty of rich, mellow elements throughout this one (as you’d expect from Glenmorangie), with touches of sticky PX sweetness and herb-y spiciness.
