Single Malt from the Highlands takes on many shapes and forms. Because the region is so vast it is difficult to make sweeping statements. The most popular Highland single malt (not including the Speyside region, which is situated in the Highlands) – is Glenmorangie. Typically, single malt from the region is put into four subregions, named for the cardinal compass points. To the north there are big bodied single malts, with cereal sweetness and richness, take The Dalmore, for example. Toward the south there are lighter, fruitier whiskies with a definite dryness. Aberfeldy is a shining example of this. To the east there are some full-bodied, dry whiskies with lots of fruit and pungency. The superb Glen Garioch is one such single malt distillery. The Western Highlands offer full body and real power with peaty, smoky overtones, nearer the coast there are some more maritime flavoured whiskies too including malts from Clynelish and Pulteney.

Glenglassaugh Portsoy (70cl, 49.1%)
After two decades of silence, the Glenglassaugh distillery reawoke in 2008, and now it’s time to discover a brand new single malt, produced under the expert direction of master blender Rachel Barrie. Portsoy is a richly peated single malt, named after the coastal distillery’s neighbouring harbour village. Matured in a selection of sherry, bourbon, and Port casks, it boasts a satisfyingly smoky, maritime character with waves of tropical fruit, salted liquorice, sticky soy, and chocolate.
Glenglassaugh Sandend (70cl, 50.5%)
After laying silent for over two decades, the Glenglassaugh stills were fired back up in 2008, and in 2023, a brand new core range is ready! The distillery sits on the rugged north Aberdeenshire coast, nestled behind the beautiful surfer’s haven, Sandend Bay. Master blender Rachel Barrie has fond childhood memories of time spent at Sandend and even learned to surf there, and now the bay is honoured in the form of this unpeated single malt. Matured in a combo of bourbon, sherry, and manzanilla casks, it’s bursting with notes of tropical fruit and tablet, with delicate coastal salinity in the distance.
Glenglassaugh 12 Year Old (70cl, 45%)
A milestone moment for the Glenglassaugh distillery, which fired its stills back up in 2008 after over two decades of silence. After that reawakening, a growing stash of single malt has been patiently maturing in the distillery’s coastal warehouses, under the watchful eye of master blender Rachel Barrie. 2023 sees the launch of this brand new flagship 12-year-old single malt. Drawn from a selection of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks, it’s layered with soft stone fruits, toasted vanilla, softly salted chocolate, and sweet, nutty meringue.
