Compass Box was launched in 2000 by the American John Glaser, who was previously International Marketing Director at Johnnie Walker. To promote his whisky, John travelled through London visiting pubs and bars with samples and, in idiosyncratic style, handing out business cards billing himself as “John Glaser – Whisky Zealot”.

Compass Box’s modus operandi and strong work ethic is what sets them apart as an independent bottler and blender like no other. Compass Box buy individual casks and focus on creating a craftsman-like boutique product. None of their bottlings are chill-filtered, nor is any colouring added and are all married exclusively in American oak. This brings the characteristic sweetness to the whisky.

One of their unique expressions and a superb example of their methodology is Compass Box Hedonism. This is a marriage of between eight and fifteen different grain whiskies, most of which are over twenty years old and all are aged in first-fill American oak. Hedonism went on to be heralded as the World’s Best Grain Whisky at the 2008 World Whisky Awards. John Glaser was himself featured four times in Whisky Magazine as Innovator of the Year.

An innovative marriage of Calvados and Scotch whisky, John Glaser’s latest Compass Box creation, Affinity, balances fruity, ripe apple notes against rich spices. Using whiskies from Craigellachie Distillery in Speyside and a selection of Highland distilleries, the fruity, tart Calvados from Domaine Christian Drouin mingles with malty, spicy vanilla notes of the whisky.

Compass Box has gone and got all artsy for this expression – Compass Box Canvas! It’s a fabulous blended malt Scotch whisky, made with single malts from Tomatin, Glenburgie, Glen Elgin, and the closed Imperial Distillery. Interestingly, a portion of the single malt from Tomatin has been finished in casks that were seasoned with Vino Naranja, which is a Spanish fortified wine that is infused with orange peel. As a result, this expression boasts a brilliantly fruity flavour profile, perfect for enjoying while the sun sets.

Introduced to the Great King Street range by Compass Box in 2014, the Glasgow Blend is a superbly full-bodied blended Scotch whisky. It’s made with 33% Lowland grain whisky and 67% malt whisky from the Highlands, Speyside and Islay, aged in a combination of first-fill and refill ex-bourbon barrels and first-fill Sherry casks, with a small portion being finished in new French oak. Plentiful amounts of Sherried fruit touches surrounding a core of peaty notes – yummers.

Fun note: The label features a picture of The Wellington Statue outside of Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art, complete with traffic cone hat, said to be a symbol of the city’s sense of humour.

Compass Box Stranger & Stranger (70cl, 46%)

  • ( 0 Customer Review )

A very interesting spirit produced by Compass Box in honour of their long term collaborators, design company Stranger and Stranger.

This bottling is technically not a whisky, as it contains 1% “sacrificial spirit”: wheat and barley distillate from Girvan distillery that had been used to season experimental new American oak barrels for a year, before a brief period in refill hogsheads. As it is under 3 years old, it cannot be considered a whisky. Compass Box state that the spirit had an intensely woody character with plenty of vanilla flavour.

The remaining 99% of the blend is taken from Glenlossie, Glen Elgin and Linkwood, with the whisky aged between 17 and 22 years old. Glenlossie provides 80%, drawn from a re-charred Hogshead. 14% is taken from re-charred barrels from Glen Elgin, whilst Linkwood provides just 5%, from a sherry butt.

The whisky is fruity and floral, with powerful notes of honeysuckle, orange blossom, alongside juicy citrus and apples, with some slight cut grass, a hint of mint, burnt sugar, vanilla custard, a touch of sweet wine and sultana, with a faint bright oak sweetness.

Bottled at 46% ABV, and without out chill filtration or colouration, this blend enjoys a full body.

The label is based upon Stranger & Stranger’s logo, altered with their trademark creativity.

Less than 5,000 bottles were released.

A peaty offering and a vatted malt created by the renowned John Glaser, of Compass Box. The Peat Monster contains whisky from secret distilleries (all very cloak and dagger). They can tell us that some was from the village of Port Askaig in Islay, with some south coast Islay whisky too, vatted with Ardmore. This was matured in a mix of first fill and refill American oak casks.
