Compass Box Great King Street Glasgow Blend (70cl, 43%)

In stock
  • ( 0 Customer Review )

Introduced to the Great King Street range by Compass Box in 2014, the Glasgow Blend is a superbly full-bodied blended Scotch whisky. It’s made with 33% Lowland grain whisky and 67% malt whisky from the Highlands, Speyside and Islay, aged in a combination of first-fill and refill ex-bourbon barrels and first-fill Sherry casks, with a small portion being finished in new French oak. Plentiful amounts of Sherried fruit touches surrounding a core of peaty notes – yummers.

Fun note: The label features a picture of The Wellington Statue outside of Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art, complete with traffic cone hat, said to be a symbol of the city’s sense of humour.

Compass Box Stranger & Stranger (70cl, 46%)

In stock
  • ( 0 Customer Review )

A very interesting spirit produced by Compass Box in honour of their long term collaborators, design company Stranger and Stranger.

This bottling is technically not a whisky, as it contains 1% “sacrificial spirit”: wheat and barley distillate from Girvan distillery that had been used to season experimental new American oak barrels for a year, before a brief period in refill hogsheads. As it is under 3 years old, it cannot be considered a whisky. Compass Box state that the spirit had an intensely woody character with plenty of vanilla flavour.

The remaining 99% of the blend is taken from Glenlossie, Glen Elgin and Linkwood, with the whisky aged between 17 and 22 years old. Glenlossie provides 80%, drawn from a re-charred Hogshead. 14% is taken from re-charred barrels from Glen Elgin, whilst Linkwood provides just 5%, from a sherry butt.

The whisky is fruity and floral, with powerful notes of honeysuckle, orange blossom, alongside juicy citrus and apples, with some slight cut grass, a hint of mint, burnt sugar, vanilla custard, a touch of sweet wine and sultana, with a faint bright oak sweetness.

Bottled at 46% ABV, and without out chill filtration or colouration, this blend enjoys a full body.

The label is based upon Stranger & Stranger’s logo, altered with their trademark creativity.

Less than 5,000 bottles were released.

Compass Box The Peat Monster (70cl, 46%)

In stock
  • ( 0 Customer Review )

A peaty offering and a vatted malt created by the renowned John Glaser, of Compass Box. The Peat Monster contains whisky from secret distilleries (all very cloak and dagger). They can tell us that some was from the village of Port Askaig in Islay, with some south coast Islay whisky too, vatted with Ardmore. This was matured in a mix of first fill and refill American oak casks.

Just like in the 15 Years that I reviewed earlier I find a peculiar Aroma in the 12 Years that I can’t quite place. It’s something that reminds me of Cooked Vegetables with a little added Sulphur but that doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it. Anyway, it’s clear that there are some Refill Macallan Ex-Sherry casks in the mix. The rest is mostly Glenrothes I think while it’s very hard or even almost impossible to detect Highland Park. Is there the faintest puff of Smoke in the background? It could be but I’m not gonna put a lot of money on that. On the Nose, this Famous Grouse has Sweet notes but there’s a slightly Sour touch to it as well. I find Toasted Barley, Toast with a mix of Butter and Margarine, light Honey, Toffee, Caramel, Hay, Dried Apricot, Apples, Plums, Nuts, light Vanilla, Orange, Nougat and hints of Espresso and Milk Chocolate. The Alcohol is not fully integrated. At this price level, it’s not at all bad but objectively speaking there’s not too much of interest going on.
