To celebrate the launch of Squid Game Season 2, which returns on 26 December this year, Johnnie Walker has released a limited edition design for bottles of its Black Label whisky.
The bottles are designated with the numbers 001 to 456, which is how many characters are competing in the new series, and also gives consumers the opportunity to ‘pick their player’ via bottle.
Key features of the design include the Johnnie Walker striding man logo donning the show’s green tracksuit, and a 20-degree slanted label with a custom fabric pattern varnish to ‘simulate the texture’ of the green tracksuit.
The partnership kicked off yesterday (1 October) with a takeover of Times Square in New York, which took place at 4.56 EST, again nodding to the number of players participating in the game.
Josh Dean, vice president of Johnnie Walker, Diageo North America, said: “This partnership brings together two global icons, the world’s number one Scotch whisky and the worldwide TV phenomenon of Netflix’s Squid Game.
“Our loyal fan bases are going to be thrilled by the element of discovery with our collectible, limited edition bottle design that allows them to get close to the action. At Johnnie Walker, we’re continuing to reimagine how whisky can be enjoyed through unique and creative experiences, partnerships and occasions.”
Tying into the launch, mixologist Ginn Choe has also created a special 456 cocktail, which she called “a twist of mystery, just like the show”.
She added: “It’s made with popular and traditional Korean ingredients, such as honey for sweetener and barley tea known as bori-cha that marries well with the spice and vanilla notes of Johnnie Walker Black Label.”
The partnership between Johnnie Walker and Squid Game will also reach Europe and Asia, through outdoor media, social media campaigns, events and retail touchpoints.
On bringing the partnership to life, Magno Herran, vice president of global brand and partner marketing at Netflix, said: “Squid Game fans are highly anticipating the show’s return. To give them something really special and unexpected, in collaboration with Johnnie Walker, we dressed the iconic striding man in the show’s classic green tracksuit.
“Through our partnership, we’ve taken the series from the screen to the shelf, to the streets, even surprising fans in Times Square with an opportunity to play a game featured on Squid Game.
“This excellent integrated experience also includes promotion of the campaign on Netflix’ss ad-supported plan, so our members can pick up the perfect pairing of Johnnie Walker and Netflix for the series release this December.”
The link-up with Netflix continues a bumper period of activity for Johnnie Walker. The world’s biggest-selling Scotch whisky has also unveiled a 700ml light bottle , trialled paper bottles and announced the debut of its Black Ruby expression in global travel retail for next year.
Meanwhile, its owner, Diageo, is expecting a return to sales growth despite a “challenging consumer environment’.

This aged version of the classic Red Label enjoys a similar cult following. Its unique complexity is achieved by expertly blending an extremely diverse, but complementary range of malt whiskies, each of which has been matured for a minimum of 12 years and some for much longer. In total, up to 40 malts and grain whiskies make up the Black Label blend. Island and Islay malts deliver spice, richness and lingering peat. Speyside malts make an important contribution to the depth of taste, bringing smoky malt, fruitiness, apple freshness and a rich sherry character to the blend. At the heart of Black Label lies 12 year old Cardhu, an outstanding malt from Speyside, which imparts silkiness, a characteristic which has made it famous as a single malt.
To date, Black Label has won more international awards for excellence than any other deluxe whisky. In the 1880s, Old Highland won medals in Sydney and Paris. Over 100 years later, in 1994, Black Label picked up gold medals at the 1994 Monde Selection Awards and the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), where it also won a trophy for Best Blended Whisky. Number two in Johnnie Walker’s collectable “Blender’s Batch” series comes with an American twist: Composed from five distilleries including grain whisky from the now-closed Port Dundas, this was aged in first-fill Bourbon barrels before a six month finishing in former American rye whiskey casks. Its inspiration stems from Jim Beveridge’s time spent blending Bourbons and ryes in Kentucky in the 1990s. Normally a travel retail exclusive, we’ve sneaked a small volume into out latest shipment!
A 2017 addition to the Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch range (they released the Red Rye Finish expression as part of the range in 2016), this blend was features whiskies finished in casks that previously held Caribbean pot still rum.

Only one in 25,000 casks make the cut to become Elusive Umami, chosen to create a harmony of sweet and savoury flavours. Pair this with caviar and you’re winning!
The Ghost and Rare series from Johnnie Walker Blue Label kicked off in 2017 and took a break last year.
Diageo’s Johnnie Walker brand is readying the release of the fourth in its Ghost and Rare series of bottlings from the Blue Label expression.
A tribute to the now-defunct Pittyvaich distillery on Speyside, the no-age-statement blended malt will be available from next month in limited numbers. Whisky from two other closed distilleries, Port Dundas and Carsebridge, features in the blend along with liquid from Speyside’s Mannochmore, Auchroisk, Cragganmore and Strathmill as well as Royal Lochnagar in the Highlands.
Pittyvaich opened in 1974 before closing its doors 18 years later.
When contacted by Just Drinks, a spokesperson for Diageo declined to give specific quantities of the bottling, citing commercial sensitivity. However, each bottle will be “individually numbered”, according to the brand owner.
Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost & Rare Pittyvaich follows 2017’s Brora bottling, Port Ellen from a year later and 2019’s Glenury Royal in the series.
The Fifth offering in this limited-edition series, Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Dundas, draws on rare casks from the legendary “ghost” distillery of Port Dundas, which existed for almost 200 years until it closed its doors in 2010.
The fifth in a series of special releases comes from the long closed “ghost” distillery of Port Dundas. This forms the heart, and is blended with very rare whiskies from Cameronbridge and Glenkinchie plus more from Clynelish, Dailuaine and Auchroisk.

This is the first in a new series that’s exclusive to travel retail. We’ve managed to secure a small allocation from a secret source.
“The Spice Road ” was created by master blender, Jim Beveridge, to evoke the aromas of Asia. It’s one of a series collectively known as “The Explorers Club Collection'” in reference to John Walker’s pioneering travel around the world to establish markets for his whiskies back in the 1800s. The Spice Road is the first in a sub-series named the Trade Route Series – the whiskies are inspired by the cultural richness that can be found on three of the world’s great trade routes.
Spice Road will be followed by ‘The Gold Route”, with tropical flavours designed to reflect the aromas of the Caribbean and Latin America, due for release in March or April next year. Finally, Johnnie Walker ”The Royal Silk Route”, the most expensive of the line-up, will hit airport shelves in May or June. We’ll see if we can source these releases as they go to market.

It’s sweeter than you might expect from the brand, with prominent toffee and fruit notes that bring the best from lemonade, cola and ginger. For the summer of 2020, Johnnie Walker have launched a brighter, sweeter whisky called Johnnie Blonde Blended Scotch Whisky. According to Johnnie Walker, this is one of the most versatile whiskies they’ve ever made. With this whisky, Johnnie Walker have taken bright wheat whiskies which have been matured in sweet American oak. This gives flavours of toffee and caramel, before being brought together with fresher, fruity malt flavours from the whole of Scotland. On the nose the vanilla notes come through strongly, along with toffee and berry aromas. On the palate the sweetness continues, again with sweetened vanilla, apples, and a light spiciness and caramel aromas. The finish on this whisy is smooth, and very light. Perfect Serve. Drouhin have vineyards that entitle them to make nearly every one of the 101 Burgundy appellations, which few other family-run quality negociants can boast. Their quality in each is the focal point of every element of the production of wines and, using only organic and bio-dynamic practices since the 1970s, they reach their own exacting standards vintage after vintage. This blend of some of the best villages in the Cote de Beaune is a delicious wine that shows why the village wines can achieve such attention and have such a wealth of historical respect. The wine is supple but structured and complex yet approachable and is a very fine example of ‘what all the fuss is about’ without having to break the bank. The Joseph Drouhin winery is committed body and soul to the diversity of Burgundy, producing wines from almost 90 different appellations. The firm owns over 80 hectares of vines, most of them being Premier and Grand Crus, where they cultivate the two star grapes from Burgundy: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Joseph Drouhin creates wines from a fascinating variety of terroirs, expressing the authenticity and subtle differences in Burgundy wines.
A true family business, the Maison Joseph Drouhin has been run by the Drouhin family for the last 140 years. It is currently in the hands of the fourth generation who share the same passion and desire to listen to nature which inspired the winery’s founder. The Maison has adopted biological and biodynamic agricultural methods, using only natural products in the vineyards and showing the utmost respect for the land, vines and environment. One of the winery’s slogans sums it up perfectly – “we offer natural solutions to nature problems.” Vineyards are ploughed by horses, wild plants are allowed to grow between the vines to encourage the presence of natural predators, and natural compost and herbal infusions are used to help the vines grow and stay healthy. Drouhin reproduce the plants themselves to conserve their genetic heritage and control the quality of the process. Vines are deliberately planted close to each other to ensure low yields and receive the delicate message and values the soil offers the fruit.
