It’s the second in ‘Wine Geese’ series, all of which feature whiskey finished in casks from wineries run by Irish winemakers around the world – the family currently running Chateau Montelena was originally from Waterford!
Green Spot is a fabulous single pot still whiskey and much loved by the critics. This Irish whiskey has come far from the days when it was only sold in Mitchell’s grocer shop in the heart of Dublin, though its flavour profile is still just as robust. This wine is showing exceptionally well in this classic vintage. The 2016 Guidalberto (Cabernet Sauvignon and a smaller percentage of Merlot) opens to a full and generous bouquet and a beautifully rich and velvety appearance. This edition of Tenuta San Guido’s mid-level wine offers a bigger aromatic profile, more texture and more volume as well. Dark cherry and blackberry segue to spice, tar, leather and sweet fruit at the end. The mouthfeel is elegantly shaped, silky and nuanced. This may well be the best vintage of Guidalberto I have yet to taste—and you can get this wine at a great price too.

Haig Club is a new Single Grain Scotch Whisky with a character and style that sets it apart. Haig Club is designed to be different – from the unique way in which the liquid has been crafted to the distinctive square, blue bottle, to the partnership with global icon David Beckham and British entrepreneur Simon Fuller.
The much anticipated David Beckham endorsed single grain whisky, produced at Cameronbridge distillery. A combination of first-fill, rejuvenated and refill bourbon barrel-matured whiskies are used and Beckham, along with Simon Fuller, is very much involved in the development of the Haig Club brand.
The Haig dynasty meanwhile is the stuff of legend, with Robert Haig getting himself into trouble for distilling on the sabbath back in 1655! Cameronbridge was founded by John Haig in 1824, and a continuous still designed by Robert Stein (who was John’s uncle) was soon installed at the site for the production of grain whisky, predating Aeneas Coffey’s famous patent for his own version of the continuous still by a handful of years.
The grain whisky produced at Cameronbridge would naturally become integral to the well-loved Haig blended whiskies and now the Haig brand has been reinvented for a new generation and new markets. It may seem like a scary new world to some, but grain whisky is on the march, and Haig Club is at the very forefront.
Made by John Haig and Company, the oldest Scotch whisky distillers in the world (well, in Scotland, and by proxy the world). Haig Gold Label is made with 40% malt whisky, including Glenkinchie and Linkwood.
An impressive aged rum from Haiti, independently bottled by That Boutique-y Rum Company for its Cinema Series. This sugar cane juice-based rum was column distilled in 2004, spending its first six years maturing in Haiti, before being transferred to the UK to complete its 18-year maturation. With complex layers of tart fruit, creamy caramel, and earthy oak, it’s a fab find from those Boutique-y folks.

A perennial favourite and a must-try for anyone interested in discovering Japanese whisky. Hakushu is owned by Suntory, founders of the first Japanese distillery, Yamazaki. The original Hakushu distillery was built in 1973, with another distillery building called Hakushu Higashi (east) added in 1981.

To celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2023, House of Suntory released this special Hakushu 12 Year Old bottling (among other limited-edition whiskies)! Inside you’ll find the same whisky we know and love, a gently peated single malt with a distinctive herbaceousness, but the bottle has been adorned with a special label for the occasion. The illustration on the bottle captures the Hakushu distillery in green, representing the forest that surrounds it.
Launched in 1994, the Hakushu 18 year old is the only age-statement from the distillery still in production.
Hakushu is the highest operational distillery in Japan, towering over its competitors at a height of more than 2000 feet above sea-level. It is a Suntory distillery and, while not quite as globally famous as Yamazaki, the quality of single malt whisky produced here is nothing short of outstanding.
Hakushu is known to use one of the most pristine water supplies in the whole of Japan, drawn from reserves at the base of Mount Kai Komagatake. The water here has a very low mineral content and is much softer than that found elsewhere in the country, and this helps the distillery to create a refreshing, crisp and well-balanced range of expressions.
Many of the whiskies created here are lightly peated, giving peat lovers the perfect ‘in’ to the world of Japanese whisky. On top of receiving the recognition of critics, experts and fans around the world, the distillery’s expressions have also picked up a whole host of awards that highlight the effective processes and expertise of those behind their whisky production.
The extensive and delightful range of notes, combined with the unparalleled smoothness, have led the Hakushu 18 Year Old to pick up multiple awards throughout the years. In 2016, it won “Best Japanese Single Malt Whisky” at the World Whiskies Awards, on top of a Double Gold in San Francisco in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

This is the oldest Hakushu that the distillery has ever produced: Hakushu 25 Years Old!
From Suntory’s mountain distillery, found deep within the forests of Mount Kaikomagatake Hakushu is owned by Suntory, founders of the first Japanese distillery, Yamazaki. The original Hakushu distillery was built in 1973, with another distillery building called Hakushu Higashi (west) added in 1981.
Founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii, Yamazaki is Japan’s first bona fide whisky distillery. Sitting in between Osaka and Kyoto – served by the converging rivers of Katsura, Uji, and Kizu – the stills are varied in shape, size, lyne arm position and some are direct-fired while others are steam-heated. All of which allows for a creation of many different styles of spirit destined for blending as well as bottling as single malt.
An older expression of the excellent Yamazaki whisky. Fully matured in sherry casks for 25 years.
Only around 100 of these limited edition bottlings were produced. Sealed with a Mizuhiki, the five corded knot symbolising a joining of hands, this edition celebrates Japanese hospitality.

12-year-old malt whisky from Hatozaki, this interesting Japanese bottling was initially matured in American oak casks, before being finished for six months in barrels that previously held Umeshu liqueur, arguably the most iconic fruit liqueur made in the country using a native variety of small plums called ume.
Probably the most prestigious light Cuban rum, Havana Club 3 year old infuses an extra touch of quality into rum cocktails and is great with just about any mixer we can think of.

The second of Havana Club’s Professional Editions, Edition B is a blend of three rums, one of which has been finished in peated Islay whisky casks. The resulting spirit is a dark rum full of classic, rich rum-sweetness and fruit notes tempered by a subtle, yet unmistakeable smoky twang. This perfect balance of sweetness and dry, earthy tones means Edition B makes an excellent base for cocktails like the Rum Old Fashioned.
A relaunch of Havana Club’s Cuban Barrel Proof edition, Selección de Maestros has benefited from an eye-catching packaging upgrade and is bottled at 45% for extra oomph.
The Gold Medal-winning liquid inside Havana Club Selección de Maestros remains the same as for the old Cuban Barrel Proof – as the name suggests, the casks have been hand-picked by the maestros roneros from the company’s finest aged stocks.
The rums selected by the maestros roneros are finished in special casks chosen for their aromatic properties before being bottled at a higher strength than the standard range for a more intense, immediate flavour on the palate.

Heaven’s Door is a double-aged Tennessee bourbon, created by Bob Dylan. It’s actually a blend of three distinct whiskies, married in new American oak barrels and treated to an additional year together prior to bottling.
Behold, Double Barrel Bourbon from the Heaven’s Door range. Created by the one and only Bob Dylan and Marc Bushala (founder of Angel’s Envy Bourbon), this expression blends together three whiskeys which are then finished in hand-toasted, new American oak barrels. This brings forward plenty of the whiskey’s warming, spicy, toasty notes, while still letting the bright, zesty fruit notes sing.
Here we have Heaven’s Door Straight Rye, created by Bob Dylan (yes, that exact Bob Dylan you’re thinking of) and Marc Bushala (founder of Angel’s Envy Bourbon) in a church in Tennessee. Interestingly, for their rye, they have chosen to finish the whiskey in toasted oak cigar barrels (they’re cigar shaped, they didn’t just have a load of cigars stashed in them) from Vosges in France! Very intrigued to see the impact this finishing period has had on the whiskey…

A stunning 12 year-old blend from Hibiki, some of the whisky has been part-matured in plum liqueur casks. Lovely malt from Hakushu and Yamazaki, plus some aged grain from Chita, this terrific Japanese blend picked up the top prize in its category at the World Whisky Awards 2010.
The 12 year old Hibiki was introduced to the range in 2009, but was discontinued in favour of a new non-age statement Japanese Harmony as the entry level product in 2015.

This is Suntory’s most popular blend, the Hibiki. Launched in 1989, it contains malt whisky from Yamazaki and Hakushu, and grain from the Chita distillery. The 17 year old was joined in the original lineup by a 21 year old and a non-age statement. The latter both still exist in one form or another, but this expression was discontinued in 2018 after unprecedented demand for Japanese whiskies created wholesale stock shortages within even its largest companies.

Highland Park’s 15 Year Old Viking Heart has been made using predominantly sherry-seasoned European and American casks, as well as a few refill casks, bottled at 44% ABV. Well, I suppose we should say “ceramic decantered” rather than “bottled”, really. The decanters were made by Wade Ceramics, and inspired by the earthenware vessels that whisky would have been stored in centuries ago.
STORY
Here, on Orkney, those earthly winds sweep across our island home too, reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour in winter. No trees survive such onslaught so our moorland peat is woodless, but rich in fragrant heather, producing the characteristic aromatic smokiness of our whisky.

Highland Park’s 18 Year Old enjoyed a redesign in 2017, receiving livery inspired by the wood carvings from Urnes Stave Church and a new sub-name, “Viking Pride”. The Orkney single malt remains the same as before – rich, complex and supremely delicious.

Introduced in 1997, the 25 year old was bottled at a variety of cask strengths until the core range was revamped in 2006, when it received a permanent ABV of 48.1%. A new expression with a lower strength was introduced in 2013 before another rebranding of the core range saw the 25 year old become a batch release again in 2019.
The remarkable complexity of our 25 YEAR OLD single malt whisky owes a great deal to its maturation in a high proportion of the finest quality first-fill Sherry seasoned European oak casks.
The casks impart an astonishing flavour to the whisky as it matures – at once dark and full bodied with a rich and nutty spiciness, yet brimming with sweet dried fruits, cinder toffee and soft fudge. 25 years encased in oak has not only created a whisky with impressive depths, but time has delivered a vibrant sweetness too. Renowned whisky writer F. Paul Pacult named it Best Spirit in the World in the 2013 Spirit Journal – an accolade of which we are particularly (but typically quietly) proud.

A 30 year old from Highland park and a winner of many awards including a Platinum award from the Chicago Beverage Testing Institute.
In Malt Advocate, John Hansell commented “Whiskies like this one remind me why I fell in love with whisky in the first place” and we know exactly what he means. There’s that fudgy sweetness that characterises the more mature Highland Park, but here it’s combined with complex aromatic spices as well as dark chocolate orange and floral peat notes. Casks have a huge influence on our whisky. As our fresh new make spirit slowly matures inside them, the casks use these long years to impart their vast array of robust flavours.

Cask Strength Release No. 1 is matured predominantly in sherry seasoned American oak casks of different ages, hand-selected by Gordon Motion, our Master Whisky Maker. It is then directly bottled – not chill-filtered – to ensure the essential DNA and natural colour of our whisky stays intact. There is nothing in this whisky other than the whisky itself. It is at once sweet and smoky on the nose, with aromas of violets and ripe vanilla pods amidst waves of aromatic peat smoke. To honour their hero (the Batman of the Orkney Islands, if you will), Highland Park have created a whisky with a suitably ‘dark’ character. Using 80% first-fill Sherry casks (20% refill) – 60% are first-fill European oak, with 20% being first-fill American oak – an exciting, spicy, chocolatey whisky has been produced.

The Poetic Edda tells the tale of the apocalyptic battle between the Gods and the Fire and Ice Giants, where the old world perished in a blazing ball of fire and the new world was born from its ashes. Celebrating this re-birth, or Ragnarok, we released 28,000 bottles of FIRE EDITION, encased in specially commissioned crimson glass. Matured in 100% refill Port seasoned casks – a first for Highland Park – the result is a vibrant single malt with the natural hue of glowing flames. Here, damsons, cinnamon, dried fruit and chocolate dance on the tongue, before sizzling to an intense fruity finish.

STORY
Released in 2013, Harald is part of The Warrior Series, a collection of single malts created for Duty-Free to both introduce a key figure from Orkney’s Viking history and to demonstrate the impact of cask type on our whisky’s flavour, which is immense.
This bottling is named for King Harald Fairhair, King of Norway (b. 860-d. 940). His army, known as the “bersekers” were known to be fierce in bottle and often used their shields for both protection and as weapons.
Harald was an incredibly important character in the founding of the Orkney earldom, as well as having a major role in the development of Viking history. King of Norway, Harald was famed for his army, which was revered across the world.
Matured in a combination of sherry seasoned American oak and European oak casks, Harald is a complex, yet finely balanced whisky, with an intense flavour brimming with heady ginger, sandalwood, sweet sponge cake and hints of freshly grated nutmeg.

ICE EDITION represents a very special two-part bottling, celebrating the Viking sagas recorded in the oldest recorded Norse poems, the Poetic Edda.
In a fittingly chilly reflection of Nilfheim, one of the nine worlds of old Norse mythology and the birthplace of ice, frost and fog, ICE EDITION is presented in a glacial blue bottle. Exquisitely designed to reflect shards of glittering ice, the bottle is encased in a wooden mountain-like cradle and sealed with a wooden stopper. A special release of only 30,000 bottles, it delivers intense aromas of cool fresh pineapple and ripe mango sorbet, underpinned by a frosty kick of root ginger, reflecting all the majestic powers of the great Ice Giant, Ymir.
Released in 2013, Ingvar is part of The Warrior Series, a collection of single malts created for Duty-Free market in Taiwan, to both introduce a key figure from Orkney’s Viking history and to demonstrate the impact of cask type on our whisky flavour, which is immense. This is a Cask Strength Special Edition.
Ingvar Ragnarson, was a warrior King, known for his exceptional cruelty, strength and skill with many weapons. After successfully conquering Dublin in Ireland, he formed the Great Heathen Army which rampaged through Northern England, beheading the King of that region in the process. Ingvar’s army moved quickly using a variety of weapons including the long spear, which although not as glamorous as the sword or as frightening looking as a battle axe, was deadly on the battlefield and in close combat.
Ingvar was released in early 2016 for the Taiwanese travel retail market, and was named in honour of Ingvar Ragnarsson, “a Warrior king known for his exceptional cruelty, strength and skill”.
Matured in a combination of Ex-Bourbon and Sherry oak casks 60.5% ABV / 70cl
Tasting Notes
Colour: Rich golden amber.
Nose: Honeycomb, ripe tropical fruit, orange peel, polished oak, warm spice and aromatic peat smoke.
Palate: Elegant and layered, with sun-drenched fruit, honey sweetness, heady spice, gentle smoke, malt richness and mature oak depth.
Finish: Long and refined, with lingering spice, soft peat smoke, honeyed fruit and polished Highland Park character.

STORY
Released in 2013, Ragnvald is part of The Warrior Series, a collection of single malts created for Duty-Free to both introduce a key figure from Orkney’s Viking history and to demonstrate the impact of cask type on our whisky’s flavour, which is immense.
Arguably the most famous of the viking pioneers to sail uncharted waters, Ragnvald was more at home on sea than on land, undertaking numerous brave expeditions as far as the Middle East and even Asia. Ragnvald assisted King Harald and was given the title of Earl. He was a noted sailor and warrior and the black dragon or drekar is a symbol from the longships that he sailed.Â
Ragnvald arguably the most famous and pioneering of all Vikings to enter uncharted waters, he was most at home aboard his longship undertaking his many great expeditions throughout the Middle East and even Asia.

Predominantly matured in the finest sherry seasoned European oak casks, Ragnvald’s flavour is rich and succulent, with distinct yet balanced notes of dark chocolate, candied peel, and oriental spices, all rounded off with heather rich peat smoke.

The second release in the Magnus series from Highland Park, this will sell out before we even finish writing this sentence. It was created to celebrate Saint Magnus, who was described in the Orkenyinga Saga (no idea either) as “a man of extraordinary distinction, tall, with a fine, intelligent look about him.” It goes on this way, with numerous further compliments. We reckon he was writing about himself. Sadly, Saint Magnus was murdered by his treacherous cousin, Haakon.

The single malt is named after one of the most feared Viking earls in the Orkneyinga Saga. The symbol is a sword of Sigurd which he inherited from his dead father. The Sigurd whisky comes in a beautiful wooden box and as soon as the whisky is in your glass, you imagine yourself in the middle of this saga!
Sigurd was one of the most feared Viking warriors considered to be strong, courageous and in possession of a warriors instinct as razor sharp as the sword he carried by his side.
