Speyside single malts are single malt Scotch whiskies, distilled in Strathspey, the area around the River Spey in Moray and Badenoch and Strathspey, in northeastern Scotland.
The two best-selling single malt whiskies in the world, The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, come from Speyside. Strathspey has the greatest number of distilleries of any of the whisky producing areas of Scotland. Dufftown alone has six working distilleries with an annual capacity of 40.4m litres of spirit.
Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail is a tourism initiative featuring eight Speyside distilleries and the Speyside Cooperage. Speyside also hosts an annual whisky festival known as “Spirit of Speyside”.
Speyside whiskies can generally be classified as light and grassy (e.g. Glenlivet) or rich and sweet (e.g. Macallan).

A 13 year old Aberlour from the Distillery Reserve Collection. This Single Cask Edition was distilled on 11th December 2006 and bottled on 14th July 2020 from a 1st fill butt.
This roaring success could be attributed to the delicate berry-flavour spirit that runs from its swan-necked stills, or to the enormous popularity of its heavily sherried A’bunadh batch releases. Perhaps even the fact that the Distillery Manager used to serenade the slumbering casks with the soothing tones of the bagpipes. Okay, maybe not the last thing!

Aberlour 6 Year Old Oloroso Cask Finish Darkness (50cl, 48.7%)
This six-year-old single malt from Aberlour joins the Darkness collection, meaning you can expect plenty of sherry cask goodness here. This one finished its time maturing in an oloroso sherry octave. The small size of the cask ensures greater interaction between the whisky and the wood, and this single malt is brimming with notes of burnt sugar and cream, sweet spice, and candied nuts.
Aberlour 6 Year Old Pedro Ximénez Cask Finish Darkness (50cl, 49%)
Another delicious six-year-old Aberlour single malt joins the Darkness range, and this one was drawn from a custom-made octave cask that previously held Pedro Ximénez sherry. Prepare for rich layers of floral honey, nutty malt, and creamy chocolate here.

Aberlour Casg Annamh Batch 4 (1L, 48%)

Aberlour Casg Annamh Batch 7 (1L, 48%)
The seventh batch from a series that delivers consistent sherried Speyside tastiness and takes its name from the Gaelic for ‘rare cask’. Aberlour uses a trio of casks to create each batch, all sherried, with one European oak and two varieties of American oak.

Allt-A-Bhainne single malt, distilled in 1996 and matured for 23 years, before being independently bottled by Duncan Taylor in 2020. An independently bottled 7 year old Auchroisk single malt, released as part of the Parkmore Selection (based in the Coleburn warehouse – wonderful stuff to hear for those of us who love hearing about closed distilleries not just being left to rot or getting smashed into pieces). It was initially aged in bourbon casks before enjoying a finishing period in casks that previously held Madeira wine.
Aultmore 10 Year Old Oloroso Cask Finish Darkness (50cl, 53.8%)
We do love a well sherried Aultmore, and this one makes an excellent addition to the collection from indie bottler Darkness! Matured for 10 years, the whisky was finished in a custom-made octave cask that previously held oloroso sherry. It’s a hugely characterful sipper, brimming with oily nuts, dried fruit, roasted coffee, and biscuity malt.
Aultmore 12 Year Old (70cl, 46%)
12 year old Aultmore single malt Scotch whisky, unveiled in 2014 for the Last Great Malts by Dewar’s. A refreshing dram, with plenty of vanilla, honey and citrus, alongside a touch of grassiness. It’s been quite a while since a distillery bottling of Aultmore has been released, so this is all rather exciting indeed.
Aultmore 13 Year Old That Boutique-y Whisky Company (50cl, 50%)
This 13-year-old single malt from Aultmore joins That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s Cinema Series having matured in not one, but two different bourbon casks. After an initial 11 years in a refill bourbon barrel, the whisky was re-racked in a fresh first-fill bourbon barrel to bathe for its final years, ensuring that the biscuity malt shines alongside layers of zesty citrus and chalky grist.
Batch 18 is a release of 418 bottles.

An 18 year old Aultmore launched in 2015 as part of John Dewar & Sons’ Last Great Malts ranges.
Balmenach 9 Year Old Oloroso Cask Finish Darkness (50cl, 56.6%)
Much of the single malt produced at Speyside’s Balmenach distillery is destined for premium blends including the likes of Johnnie Walker… not this little gem though! This single malt joins the Darkness range of intensely sherried whiskies, having matured for nine years, including a finish in a single oloroso sherry octave cask. The smaller casks that Darkness uses allow more interaction between the wood and the whisky, so you can expect mouthcoating layers of sweet, nutty spice here.

This bottle was part of a private collection – if you’d like more detailed photos just get in touch!

Balvenie 12 Year Old The Sweet Toast of American Oak Stories No.1 (70cl, 43%)
A creamy, sweet single malt, The Sweet Toast of American Oak is the first whisky in the Balvenie Stories collection. Finished in heavily-toasted virgin American oak casks from Kentucky, it is even fruitier than normal. Sweet, malty aromas of fudge, citrus and oaky vanilla mingle with spicy ginger and warm cinnamon on the nose. The palate initially offers notes of candied orange peel, vanilla toffee and butterscotch, developing slowly into flavours of melted brown sugar, blossom honey and rich oak spice.
The Balvenie Stories collection is designed to bring to life the tales of ‘character, endeavour and craft’ of those at Balvenie through the generations.
Balvenie 14 Year Old 2003 Vintage Peat Week (70cl, 48.3%)
Since 2002, the Balvenie distillers have dedicated one week a year to distilling whisky with 100% peated barley, resulting in the Peat Week bottlings! This is the second release in the series – a 14 year old single malt distilled in 2003, showing off hearty helping of rich smoke.
Balvenie 14 Year Old 2009 A Collection of Curious Casks 70cl, 47.8%
Another addition to the exclusive Balvenie Stories range which showcases the rich history of the distillery. This unusual single malt was the first batch distilled with unpeated barley following the annual ‘peat week’ when smoky whisk is made so it has picked up a subtle smoky flavour. It was then aged for 14 years in first-fill bourbon casks and bottled at 47% to produce a unique Balvenie.
Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask (70cl, 43%)
This whisky has been matured for 14 years in traditional oak casks before being transferred to Caribbean rum casks to impart some extra flavour. This process has created a well-rounded and drinkable whisky with notes of fruit and vanilla.
Balvenie 14 Year Old The Week Of Peat Stories No.2 (70cl, 48.3%)
This 14-year-old heavily-peated single malt is the second whisky in the Balvenie Stories collection – a sweet and smoky whisky that balances earthy peat smoke with the distillery’s characteristic citrus edge. Gentle peat smoke, delicate flowers and sweet butterscotch fill the nose, while the palate initially offers notes of sharp citrus, blossom honey, creamy vanilla and rich, earthy peat.
The Balvenie Stories collection is designed to bring to life the tales of ‘character, endeavour and craft’ of those at Balvenie through the generations. The Week of Peat is inspired by the tradition, started in 2002, of distilling peated malt for only one week every year.
Balvenie 15 Year Old Madeira Cask 70cl, 43%
The Balvenie Madeira Cask is a lively and summery single malt finished in casks previously which previously held Madeira wine.
In historic times, ships set sail filled with casks of Madeira wine around the New World. Throughout their journey, casks were exposed to the heat of the sun, naturally sweetening the wine it held.
Malt Master David C. Stewart has enjoyed times exploring the Madeira region and wines they produce, inspiring his experimentation of the cask type for finishing.
This is not the first time David has used Madeira casks – previous expressions have been of older ages. This release has a lighter, livelier character.

The Triple Cask range is matured in first-fill American oak barrels, traditional refill casks and first-fill Oloroso Sherry butts. Balvenie 17 Year Old DoubleWood (70cl, 43%)
This 17 year old expression from the Balvenie distillery furthers the concept of their hugely popular 12 year old DoubleWood. “DoubleWood” refers to a consecutive maturation in two different types of casks, also referred to as a “finish”. Exactly like its younger brother, this 17 year old single malt spent the first many years of its maturation in American ex-bourbon barrels, before being transferred to European oak ex-sherry casks. While the initial maturation adds qualities of deeply sweet vanilla, the sherry casks adds dried fruits, and a rich spiciness. The end result is a strikingly complex and delicious whisky, sure to impress even the most seasoned aficionado.
Balvenie 17 Year Old Islay Cask (70cl, 43%)
In the making of The Balvenie IslayCask, David Stewart selected Balvenie single malt which had matured in traditional oak casks for at least 17 years and transferred it into 94 casks which had previously held Islay single malt. After six months he felt the casks had imparted the desired delicate amount of peaty notes, typical of Islay, whilst retaining the distinctively honeyed character of The Balvenie. The Balvenie IslayCask was bottled in 2001 and the late Michael Jackson, world renowned whisky expert and author of The Malt Whisky Companion, wrote the following about it:

Balvenie 17 Year Old The Week of Peat Stories No.2 (70cl, 49.4%)
The Balvenie Stories Week of Peat 17 Year Old (49.4% ABV) results from a patient and careful monitoring process to reach a perfect balance of peat and signature Balvenie flavour notes – unmistakable honey, citrus and notes of peak smoke. This is a limited-edition single malt Scotch whisky from The Balvenie Distillery, available in a 70cl bottle ready for gifting.
The Week Of Peat story begins with distillery manager Ian Millar’s eagle eye spotting a weeks gap in the distillery schedule. Eager to experiment with The Balvenie profile using what he had learnt from a recent trip to Islay, he ordered a batch of Speyside peat for the kiln and built a peat burner on the side “for, well, extra peatiness”. The whisky produced is rich in honey, vanilla and citrus notes with an extra layer of delicate smoke.
The Balvenie Distillery is built on age-old traditions and stories which are passed on from one generation of craftsmen to the next. The Balvenie Stories are a range of exclusive single malt whiskies, each representing tales of character, endeavour and craft.
A bottle of The Balvenie 17 Year Old The Week of Peat Single Malt Scotch Whisky, a heavily peated expression inspired by the whisky produced at the distillery in the late 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s. This was bottled at 49.4% ABV as Story No. 2 in The Balvenie Stories series.

A 2021 release in the Balvenie Stories series, The Second Red Rose harks back to a release from the distillery’s history. The Balvenie Rose was finished in a Port pipes, resulting in a hue that was befitting of its name (which itself was an homage to what Margaret Douglas paid King James II as rent for staying in Balvenie Castle – a single red rose). For The Second Red Rose, the 21 year old single malt you see here, Balvenie’s malt master David C. Stewart chose to finish the expression in Australian Shiraz casks, imparting a whole host of ripe fruit notes, touches of blackberry and peach, a helping of rich oak, and of course, a rosy hue.
Released in late 2021, this is part of the Stories series from Balvenie. This particular whisky has been finished in ex-Shiraz red wine casks and is the 5th edition in the range which began in 2008.

2018 marks the 25th anniversary of The Balvenie DoubleWood, and so to celebrate we are looking back at its journey.
Just as DoubleWood pairs two woods, we have brought together pairings of our own for a celebratory dram. In each film our distillery brand ambassador David Mair sits down with a familiar face from the DoubleWood’s history, to look back at the last 25 years and forward to the future. Our first guest is David Stewart MBE, Balvenie malt master and the DoubleWood’s creator, who discusses his fond Balvenie memories. Next we sat down with head cooper Ian McDonald, who after nearly half a century at the distillery has more than a story or two to share. Finally, we look towards the future with Kelsey McKechnie as she embarks on her malt master apprenticeship under David Stewart.
A Double wood edition from Balvenie and aged for 12 years, being transferred between traditional oak casks and first filled European oak sherry casks. It was a winner at the 2012 IWSC taking gold in the whiskey scotch category. Presented in a wonderful handmade wooden gift tube.

Balvenie 25 Year Old Rare Marriages (70cl, 48%)
A 25-year-old single malt from Balvenie’s Rare Marriages series, matured exclusively in European and American oak casks and married in a tun to create a fruity, elegant whisky. Aromas of autumn fruits, runny honey, crystalised ginger and oaky spice fill the nose, complemented by notes of toasted marshmallows, apple tart, cinnamon and fruit salad throughout the palate.
Balvenie 25 Year Old Single Barrel 70cl, 47.8%
The Balvenie 25 Year Old Single Barrel Traditional Oak, was introduced to the Balvenie single malt Scotch whisky range in 2014. Released in batches, each bottle is one of no more than 300, drawn from a single cask, all of which are refill American oak casks. There will be slight variations between batches, but the casks selected by Malt Master David Stewart for this release are chosen for having the richly spiced, sweetly honeyed character you’d expect from 25 year old Balvenie single malt aged in American oak. This means there is an overarching consistency between batches.

Balvenie 25 Year Old Triple Cask (70cl, 40%)
At the top of the Balvenie Triple Cask range sits the 25 Year Old. This incredible expression contains whiskies aged in traditional refill casks, first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and first-fill Oloroso Sherry butts, which have been matured for at least 25 years and allowed to marry for around six months in a marrying tun before being bottled. Astonishing stuff from the renowned Speyside distillers. This was originally released as a Travel Retail exclusive.
Balvenie 27 Year Old A Rare Discovery From Distant Shores (70cl, 48%)
A 27-year-old Balvenie single malt that was discovered by chance by David Stewart from the inventory of travelling salesman John Barret. Rich and indulgent, this whisky has been finished in oak that previously held Caroni rum.
An impressive addition to The Balvenie Stories Range, A Rare Discovery From Distant Shores celebrates the friendship and collaboration between different spirits producers. Matured for 27 years, this single malt spent its final seven years finishing in ex-Caroni rum casks, which ought to be pretty exciting for fans of the long-closed Trinidadian distillery. We all know how well Balvenie’s whisky does in a rum cask, and these rare barrels found their way to the distillery thanks to a meeting between its head distiller David Stewart and John Barrett of legendary rum bottler, Bristol Spirits. What a serendipitous meeting that was, celebrated in the form of this magnificent whisky.
Balvenie 30 Year Old (70cl, 47.3%)

BenRiach 10 Year Old (70cl, 43%)
The flagship expression from the BenRiach distillery. This 10 year old Speyside single malt is drawn from ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks after at least a decade of slumber, resulting in a malt that shows off the distillery’s style wonderfully. Expect hearty barley backed up by orchard fruit and toasted almond, alongside just a hint of herbaceous oak.
BenRiach 10 Year Old The Original Ten (70cl, 43%)
A classic combination combined with Benriach’s fruity spirit makes for a great tasting and easy-drinking whisky. Bourbon and sherry casks give this ten-year-old whisky layers of fruit and sweet vanilla, while virgin oak gives an extra kick of spice.
BenRiach 10 Year Old The Smoky Ten (70cl, 46%)
The Smoky Ten from Benriach’s core range launched in 2020 shows off the distillery’s skill at working with peated malt. Master blender Dr. Rachel Barrie and her team created this expression using whisky matured in bourbon barrels, toasted virgin oak casks and Jamaican rum casks, building a delicious flavour profile of ripe fruit and creamy spices to support the peaty wafts at its core. Top post-dinner dram, this!
BenRiach 12 Year Old The Smoky Twelve (70cl, 46%)
Brilliantly peaty 12 year old whisky here from the Benriach Distillery, released as part of its new core range launched in 2020. To create this expression, Dr. Rachel Barrie used a combo of bourbon, sherry and Marsala wine casks, imparting sun-dried fruit and warming festive spice notes to the smoky single malt.
BenRiach 12 Year Old The Twelve (70cl, 46%)
A big Benriach, taking the distillery’s fruity spirit and adding layers of rich and dark flavour to it. Aged for 12 years in bourbon, sherry and port casks, it’s a spicy dram with loads of dried fruit and soft spice.
BenRiach 16 Year Old tree Cask (70cl, 43%)
Delicious BenRiach 16 Year Old, now at 43% abv with smart new packaging. Great stuff.

BenRiach 17 Year Old Septendecim Peated Malt (70cl, 46%)

BenRiach have long been a distillery to keep your eye out for if you’re interested in whiskies with inventive maturation periods, and here’s a perfect example! BenRiach 21 Year Old Tawny Port Cask Finish (70cl, 46%)
This 21 year old malt is part of BenRiach’s Wood Finish or Cask Finish range, where whiskies mature in refill American oak casks before spending a finishing period in a more active wine or fortified wine cask. In this case, it has been finished in ex-Tawny Port hogsheads!
BenRiach 22 Year Old Albariza Peated (70cl, 46%)
Distilled and bottled by BenRiach, this 22 Year Old single malt Scotch whisky is finished in Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks, which imparts a rich, fruity sweetness to the robust, peated BenRiach flavour profile.

Benriach Quarter Cask (1L, 46%)
A litre bottle of Benriach Quarter Cask, which is first aged in bourbon barrels before a second maturation in bespoke quarter casks. The smaller casks allow for more interaction between the wood and whisky, amplifying those buttery, woody flavours we know and love.
Benriach Smoke Season 70cl, 52.8%
Celebrating the time of year when Benriach produces its peated spirit, Smoke Season is the distillery’s smokiest whisky to date! While smoky whiskies used to be much more of a thing in the Speyside region many moons ago, that’s not quite the case these days. However, Benriach has long produced peated spirit for a short while each year, and this expression shows off the fruits of that labour in its full splendour! Matured in a combination of bourbon barrels and virgin oak casks, this one packs a bold flavour profile for sure.
Benriach Smoky Quarter Cask 1L, 46%
Benriach’s Smoky Quarter Cask celebrates the distillery’s use of peat, which began in the 1970s, harking back to whisky production of old, while breaking the conventional style of whisky from the Speyside region. The use of wood-rich Highland peat results in a sweet, smoky profile, and this expression is crafted with a balance of Benriach’s peated and unpeated spirit. Initially matured in bourbon barrels, the whisky is then transferred to bespoke quarter casks. The smaller cask size ensures greater interaction between the whisky and the oak, resulting in rewardingly rich layers of fruit, vanilla, and mellow wood smoke. Oh, and this is a litre bottle originally released for travel retail, so, even more, to go round!
Benrinnes 1990 30 Year Old Connoisseurs Choice Gordon & MacPhail 70cl, 55.1%
A 1990 Benrinnes single malt from indie bottler Gordon & MacPhail, matured in a single first-fill sherry hogshead for three decades, before being bottled in November 2020 as part of its Connoisseurs Choice series. Aromas of cinnamon, ginger and fruit cake fill the nose, complemented by notes of dark chocolate, stewed apples, toffee and walnuts throughout the palate.
A cracking, seriously matured Connoisseurs Choice bottling from Gordon and MacPhail.
This whisky was distilled at Benrinnes way back in 1990. Prior to 2007, Benrinnes practiced an unusual distillation process, whereby the spirit was partially triple distilled, producing a thick, meaty new make.
This distillation process meant that Benrinnes whisky was well suited to long term maturation, particularly in sherry casks, a fact demonstrated by this bottling.
This dram has been aged for fully three decades in a First Fill Sherry Hogsheads.
The result is a dram that serves up notes of sherry soaked fruit cake, cinnamon spice, dark chocolate, baked apples, drying oak, burnt marshmallows, caramel sauce, almond flakes and muscular roasted malt. A full bodied and intense dram.
Benrinnes 30 Year Old is bottled at a cask strength of 55.1%, and without chill filtration or colouration.
Just 227 bottles were created.
