Glenmorangie 16 Year Old The Nectar (70cl, 46%)
Golden in colour and honeyed on the palate, The Nectar is made by finishing Glenmorangie single malt in casks used to age some of the world’s great sweet wines. These include Sauternes and Monbazillac from France, Moscatel from Spain and Tokaji from Hungary. A fitting successor to the discontinued Nectar D’or and an excellent after-dinner dram.
It was the memory of entering a French pastry shop that prompted Glenmorangie head of whisky creation Dr Bill Lumsden to create the brilliant Glenmorangie The Nectar D’Or. Sadly, in 2023 Glenmorangie made the announcement that Nectar D’or was being discontinued, but we weren’t upset for too long because the Highland Scotch whisky brand has created a more than fitting successor: Glenmorangie The Nectar 16 Year Old
It’s a single malt that was aged for 14 years in bourbon casks that was then finished for two more years in a new combination of great sweet white wine casks. This includes French Sauternes and Monbazillac to bring notes of orchard fruit and buttery pastries, Spanish Moscatel for sweet, syrupy dessert flavours, and Hungarian Tokaji barrels for nuttier, honeyed elements.

North British 35 Year Old That Boutique-y Whisky Company 70cl, 45.8%
North British 35yo TBWC
That Boutique-y Whisky Company is well known for its excellent independent bottlings, and its much adored label artwork designed by Emily Chappell, which is celebrated here as one of Boutique-y’s Label Editions! This limited edition 700ml bottle contains a spectacular single grain whisky from the North British distillery that enjoyed a nice long 35-year stay in a refill hogshead. The label features a character seen on previous North British Boutique-y bottlings. He usually looks a bit sinister with his eye patch and white cat, but the lovely lilac background has softened that evil air, so he now looks rather friendly and approachable after all.
A release of 329 bottles.
That Boutique-y Whisky Company bottles limited edition whiskies from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blends, all adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels. The brand won Spirits Bottler of the Year at the 2023 Spirits Business Awards, and Blender of the Year went to Sam Simmons, captain of the Boutique-y clan who oversees every one of these releases.

It’s obvious what the difference here is – it’s bottled at cask strength, a robust 54.2% ABV, which helps bolster those aforementioned roasty-toasty notes.

Bladnoch Alinta 70cl, 47%
Smoky single malt from the Bladnoch Distillery here, dubbed Alinta, after the indigenous Australian word found in several Southern Australian languages for “fire” and “flames”. This expression was drawn from a combination of first-fill bourbon casks and first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, making for a richly-flavoursome whisky.

Powerfully peaty and immensely satisfying, Ardbeg’s Corryvreckan is what happens when the distillery of Islay’s Kildalton Coast aims to make a whisky with a particularly medicinal style than its usual expressions. Aptly named after a nearby whirlpool, Corryvreckan is an intense dram that we simply love.

Dalmore The Quartet (1L, 41.5%)
The Dalmore Quartet Single Malt Scotch Whiskey is part of a special series launched by the distillery in late 2019. Under the direction of the company Whyte & Mackay, the well-known Scottish distillery released three bottlings with one interesting thing in common: each whiskeyWithin the modern product line, storage has been influenced by several types of casks. The trio matured in three types of casks, the Dalmore Quartet single malt scotch whiskey in four different barrel types, and the quintet even in five. These different influences have left fascinating traces on the spirits. The Dalmore Quartet Single Malt Scotch Whiskey and its brothers live up to their name and inspire as innovative trendsetters. After all, two barrels are now commonplace for whiskey maturation, but few companies venture into more.
