    Prince Charlie Special Reserve 1970s-80s (1L, 40%)

    Prince Charlie Special Reserve 1970s-80s (1L, 40%)

Original price was: €25.Current price is: €19.99.

A rare bottling of Prince Charlie Special Reserve blended Scotch whisky, produced by Lawson & Smith back in the 1980s. It was named after Bonnie Prince Charlie himself, and features his silhouette on the label.

A whisky dedicated to the memory of the last Scottish Prince – Charles Edward Stuart, the legend known as Bonnie Prince Charlie .

    Era and Bottling Style:
Prince Charlie Special Reserve from the 1970s-80s is likely a blend, as the “Special Reserve” designation generally refers to a higher-quality blended Scotch. During this period, whisky blends often emphasized smoothness and balance, with an emphasis on sherry cask influence and well-aged malts. So, I drew from the general characteristics of Scotch blends from that time, which often had a smooth, honeyed sweetness, mild fruitiness, subtle spices, and gentle oak influence.

    Brand History:
Prince Charlie, while less widely known, was marketed as a premium offering in that era. The blend would have been created with a balance of malt and grain whiskies, likely with a good amount of older stock to maintain a smooth, refined profile. Whiskies from that time period often had a higher percentage of malt whiskies, contributing to the richer, more complex characteristics that I described.

Common Tasting Notes for 1970s-80s Bottlings:
In general, whiskies bottled in the 1970s-1980s (both blends and single malts) tended to have certain common characteristics due to production methods and cask aging practices of the time. These included a smoother mouthfeel, more pronounced sherry cask influence (especially with dried fruit, caramel, and spices), and a gentler, less peated profile compared to some of the more intense modern expressions.

Royal Salute 21 Year is an homage by Chivas Regal to the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. At 21 years, it is also the youngest in the Royal Salute line-up. Why 21 years old you might ask? 21 is an important designation as it refers to the 21-gun-salute, for generations a form of honor and respect to sovereigns and dignitaries. Be aware that there are 3 different colors for the ceramic decanters (sapphire, ruby, and emerald), but the spirit is the same.

From a tiny distillery in Orkney, Scapa is often overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbour Highland Park. This 14yo was quite a shortlived bottling -it was introduced by then new owners Chivas Brothers to replace the old 12yo, but was subsequently superseded by the now-familiar 16 year old standard official bottling.

Peat and sherry is a great combo, though sometimes it can be a bit like a shouting match between a foghorn and a washing machine full of pots and pans. Thankfully, this one shows off a welcome harmony between the two. It’s a marvellous variation of Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire, featuring the same smoky 10 year old Islay single malt, though instead of just 25% of it being finished in sherry casks, the entirety of the whisky was finished in them. The powerfully peaty notes at its core are mellowed by just enough sherry sweetness, making for a superbly well-balanced flavour profile.

  • Sexton 11 Year Old Single Malt Irish (70cl, 43%)

Sexton 11 Year Old Single Malt Irish (70cl, 43%)

    42

The Sexton Irish Whiskey has introduced its first-ever line extension with an 11-Year-Old Single Malt, available exclusively through global travel retail. This meticulously crafted whiskey highlights a fusion of Irish tradition and modern innovation, drawing inspiration from the rugged landscapes of Northern Ireland’s North Coast.

Crafted from 100% Irish malted barley and triple distilled in copper pot stills, the whiskey is aged in Oloroso sherry-soaked French oak barrels for at least 11 years. This unique maturation imparts notes of dried fruits, dark chocolate, toasted oak, and nuts, delivering a rich and complex flavor profile.

Bottled at 43% ABV, the whiskey is presented in The Sexton’s distinctive black hexagonal bottle, concealing a deep mahogany liquid that reflects the care and precision of its production. Priced at €41 duty-free per 700ml, the release is set to debut at Dublin and Cork airports in January 2025, with further distribution planned across travel retail hubs later in the year.

The 11-Year-Old Single Malt is the vision of Master Blender Alex Thomas, known for her innovative approach to Irish whiskey. Thomas emphasized the importance of experimentation, noting that this whiskey captures the essence of The Sexton while amplifying its flavors through sherry cask aging.

Thomas shared, “This new expression balances the signature dried fruits, dark chocolate, and rich fruit cake notes with an added depth of flavor. It’s a liquid I laid down over 11 years ago, knowing it would become something truly remarkable.”

The casks were sourced from the Antonio Paez Labato family bodega in Jerez, Spain, renowned for producing Oloroso sherry barrels that contribute to the whiskey’s nutty and spiced aroma, as well as its layered and indulgent palate.

    Building on Previous Success

This new release builds on the acclaim of The Sexton Original Single Malt, which earned a double gold medal at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The 11-Year-Old Single Malt continues the brand’s evolution, designed to appeal to both seasoned whiskey enthusiasts and newcomers to the category.

The ancestral home of House Tully, Riverrun, sits at the junction of the Red Fork of the Trident and the Tumblestone River. The ruling Lord of the Riverlands, House Tully embodies the power and ferocity of the rivers it sits between. Using the power found in their positioning, House Tully forged strong alliances and built a history of honour, family and duty. Built along the banks of the River Fiddich, Glendullan Distillery originally relied on the waters it lay beside, using a water wheel to power the entire distillery. Like the Tullys themselves, this single malt can benefit from a splash of water, opening up flavours of green apple, honey and sweet vanilla.

Well, look at this! A glorious 21 year old single malt from the Singleton of Dufftown, this expression showcases the expertise of its Master of Malts, Maureen Robinson. Uniting a trio of different cask styles – Oloroso seasoned Pedro-Ximenez casks and ex-bourbon casks are hand-selected from the Dufftown archives and the single malt is married in European Oak casks, thus following the Singleton’s ‘Trinity Cask Harmony’ process. The result is a gloriously rich and mesmerising dram with exceptional balance, amping up that Dufftown deliciousness delightfully!

A remarkable release from the Singleton of Dufftown. This single malt combines whiskies matured for an impressive 25 years in a combination of sherry oak and ex-bourbon casks, expertly hand-picked from the Dufftown’s older stock by its Master of Malts, Maureen Robinson, and her team. The whiskies are then harmonised in toasted American oak casks, in what the team dub the ‘Trinity Cask Harmony’ process. A beautiful symphony of distilling prowess and cask influence, this is an exquisite expression!

In summary it can be stated that the Sir Edwards is a Scotch Whisky classic blend which reflects the best of Scotland. No excessive smoke, no tropical fruit or sea notes. Sir Edwards is still productive and puts its focus on soft refreshing facets. We tend to recommend Whisky “on the rocks” or to enjoy with cocktails.

Take the Sir Edwards Scotch Whisky, add a splash of lime juice as well as a slice of fresh lime and of course ice cubes. Then pour Cola over these ingredients. A fast, uncomplicated drink which will inspire you and give you joy. Pure and at room temperature also gives off a very good figure.
An attractive, bright amber color blended Whisky which creates the bridge between fresh, fruity and warm woody tones.

Also, yes, it was incredibly hard to resist making an Electric Six reference when writing this bottling note.

Marrying a selection of unique casks, each bottle has been hand signed by Sir Geoff Hurst himself! This should certainly hit the back of the net as a gift for an England football fan.
