Lowland single malts are single malt whiskies distilled in Scotland’s lowlands. The region is home to seven distilleries which are both currently producing and commercially available: Ailsa Bay, in Girvan; Annandale Distillery in Annan; Auchentoshan near Clydebank; Bladnoch in Galloway; Daftmill in Fife; The Glasgow Distillery in Glasgow; and Glenkinchie distillery near Edinburgh.
Several new distilleries have begun to produce new-make spirit in recent years, including Kingsbarns distillery and InchDairnie distillery, both in Fife, and Lindores Abbey,at Ardgowan,
At least six other lowland single malts are still available, but are no longer distilled: Rosebank, Kinclaith, St. Magdalene, Ladyburn, Inverleven, and Littlemill.
As a region, the Lowlands have been more strongly associated with grain whisky and blended whisky than malt whisky. Blended whisky often uses a high proportion of Lowland malt, as the less intense flavour profile means it does not dominate the other constituent whiskies.

Three Scottish Brothers 20 Year Old (70cl, 40%)
Three Scottish Bros 20yo
A glorious single grain Scotch, matured for a generous 20 years, and bottled up by Three Scottish Brothers. We don’t know the story of the brothers, but they appear to have a talent for bottling up superbly well-aged whisky, at a rather favourable price.

St Magdalene 40 Year Old 1982 Private Collection Gordon & MacPhail 70cl, 54.8%
Gordon & MacPhail’s Private collection range contains exceptionally mature whiskies from silent distilleries and this St Magdalene is no exception. Spending 40 years in a refill American hogshead has left this whisky with aromas of pomander, orchard fruit and cocoa powder on the nose, leading to poached pear, walnut and marzipan on the palate.
St Magdalene A legendary lost distillery, also known as Linlithgow, closed in 1983.
Also known as Linlithgow, this lost Lowlands distillery was built in the mid-18th century by Sebastian Henderson and operated for well over 200 years before being closed in the great cull of 1983.
It had passed to A & J Dawson in 1798 before being acquired by DCL in 1912. The distillerywas re-equipped in 1927 andhad its own floor maltings until 1968, after which it bought in malt from Glenesk.
Despite a capacity of around 200,000 gallons a year of production, there were no official bottlings during its lifetime, and most malt fans had barely heard of it until a series of stunning Rare Malt bottlings (as St. Magdalene) in the mid-to-late 1990s. It is now one of the most lamented lost distilleries (the buildings have been converted to private housing), and Rare Malt bottlings are hungrily seized upon by aficionados and collectors alike.

North British 35 Year Old That Boutique-y Whisky Company 70cl, 45.8%
North British 35yo TBWC
That Boutique-y Whisky Company is well known for its excellent independent bottlings, and its much adored label artwork designed by Emily Chappell, which is celebrated here as one of Boutique-y’s Label Editions! This limited edition 700ml bottle contains a spectacular single grain whisky from the North British distillery that enjoyed a nice long 35-year stay in a refill hogshead. The label features a character seen on previous North British Boutique-y bottlings. He usually looks a bit sinister with his eye patch and white cat, but the lovely lilac background has softened that evil air, so he now looks rather friendly and approachable after all.
A release of 329 bottles.
That Boutique-y Whisky Company bottles limited edition whiskies from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blends, all adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels. The brand won Spirits Bottler of the Year at the 2023 Spirits Business Awards, and Blender of the Year went to Sam Simmons, captain of the Boutique-y clan who oversees every one of these releases.
North British 25 Year Old That Boutique-y Whisky Company (50cl, 56.5%)
The North British distillery is the third largest of Scotland’s seven grain distilleries. The distillery was founded in Edinburgh in 1886/7 by several well-known men who wanted to maintain their independence from DCL. Its name comes from the railway company that served the distillery. Although maize is the key grain used for distillation, the mash bill contains up to 20% malted barley. This 25-year-old single-grain Scotch joins the Cinema Series from That Boutique-y Whisky Company, bottled up at cask strength.
Batch 10 is a release of 435 bottles.
Littlemill 29 Year Old Private Cellar Edition 2019 No.258 70cl, 47.3%
The first two pictures are from the actual bottle, if you’d like more detailed photos just get in touch!
A rare chance to try whisky from the sadly closed Littlemill Distillery! This is the 2019 edition of the Private Cellar release, and the whisky itself was aged for 29 years before being bottled up at 47.3% ABV. This set comes with a handsome presentation case, a 5cl bottle of the whisky (so you can taste it without having to open the full bottle), and even a piece of stave from a Littlemill cask! A release of 600 bottles.
Littlemill 29-year-old, the latest expression from Littlemill’s Private Cellar collection, will be released this September, using liquid carefully selected from some of the last remaining casks to be laid down at the Littlemill Distillery.
Now recognised to have been the oldest licensed distillery in Scotland, the distillery fell silent in 1994 and was destroyed by fire in 2004, making this liquid exceptionally rare and covetable.
Littlemill 29-year-old is the third release from the Private Cellar Collection, each crafted by Master Blender Michael Henry in Littlemill’s traditional Lowland ‘floral’ style. This latest release places emphasis on developing the wood character and only 600 bottles will be released across the world.
The liquid is contained within a bespoke Glencairn crystal decanter etched with an illustration of the River Clyde and a silver star signifying the Littlemill distillery’s location. Situated in Bowling on the banks for the River Clyde, it would prove to be a defining factor in the distillery’s success, opening important trade routes to key cities including Glasgow and Edinburgh when the Forth and Clyde Canal was completed in the 1790s.
The beautifully crafted presentation box also includes a 5cl miniature of the liquid, a piece of an original Littlemill cask, and a booklet sharing the fascinating history of the Littlemill distillery with tasting notes from Master Blender Michael Henry.
Whisky production at Littlemill, situated in Bowling on the banks of the River Clyde near Glasgow, continued until the distillery fell silent in 1994 and was subsequently destroyed by fire in 2004, never to produce a drop again.
Hamiltons Lowland Single Grain (70cl, 40%)
A single grain whisky selected by Angus Dundee for their Hamiltons range. Although the whisky regions don’t really apply to grain whisky, this is from an unnamed distillery situated in the Lowlands.
Greign 20 Year Old Lowlands Single Grain (70cl, 40%)
Greign 20 Year Old Single Grain
Greign is a Single Grain Whisky from the Macduff distillery. The original founders of the distillery buy exceptional old casks for the maturation of their whiskies. The Greign was matured in a mixture of sherry casks and freshly burnt-out casks, making the single grain a smooth, full-bodied dram.
A deliciously creamy single grain Scotch whisky here, matured for 20 years before being bottled up. Two decades has given this one plenty of time for its flavour profile to develop all those hallmark yummy grain notes, so expect toffee, honey, and cooked fruits notes by the bucket-load.

Glenkinchie 2009 Distillers Edition Bot.2021 70cl, 43%
This 2021 Glenkinchie Distillers Edition was finished in Amontillado sherry casks after first being aged in recharred American oak casks. The secondary cask influence adds richer notes of nuts and spice to the characteristically light, fruity single malt.
Glenkinchie 12 Year Old (70cl, 43%)
The flagship expression from the Glenkinchie distillery, one of the stalwarts of the Lowlands. A fantastic introduction to the region, Glenkinchie 12 Year Old shows off the characteristic lightness and grassy elements that Lowland whiskies are known for, with nods to cooked fruit and Sauternes wine along the way. Brilliant single malt to enjoy as an aperitif on a warm evening.
