Fine Oak:

First introduced in 2004, the Fine Oak range was a milestone for Macallan, as it was the first expression released by the distillery that was not solely matured in Sherry casks. The range was met with an initial scepticism from Macallan fans, but over the years it has won over many doubters.

The 17 year old edition of Macallan’s Fine Oak, showcasing the range of casks in Macallan’s extensive warehouses. The Fine Oak expressions are drawn from a trio of cask varieties – American and European oak casks seasoned with Sherry, as well as American oak casks seasoned with bourbon.

Description

Tasting Note

Nose: A potent nose for sure but it is a manufactured sweetness on caramel, coffee and milk chocolate. There is some peat in there but the toffee notes drown it out.

Taste: Bitter coffee mixed with something i can only define as chemically. The bitterness invades the palate and tongue but that is only a first impression. The alcohol is actually quite rough and the wood is shouting loudly. The bitterness is telling, i will be honest i am sensitive to woody bitterness but thie is really noticeable for me.

Finish: Who cares, the length is unimportant when the palate is like this.
