Description
Hakushu 18 Year Old Old Version 70cl, 43% is an earlier presentation of Suntory’s prestigious age-statement Japanese single malt. Produced at Hakushu Distillery, it combines extended maturation with the distillery’s characteristic freshness, aromatic herbs and refined forest-like smoke.
Hakushu Distillery stands in a forested mountain environment at the foot of Japan’s Southern Alps in Hokuto, Yamanashi Prefecture. Suntory associates the whisky’s identity with mountain-nurtured water, cool forest air and the distillery’s ability to produce several contrasting malt-spirit styles.
Hakushu 18 Year Old was introduced during the mid-2000s, with the first recognised 70cl presentation documented from approximately 2006 to 2009. The old version shown here followed and is documented as having been bottled from approximately 2009 until 2018, before Suntory introduced a redesigned presentation.
This edition is distinguished by its green glass bottle, cream-coloured label and dark green presentation carton featuring large gold Japanese characters. Although collectors commonly describe it as the “Old Version,” this wording is used to distinguish the discontinued packaging and was not an official limited-edition name created by Suntory.
The whisky itself is matured for a minimum of 18 years and presents a deeper, more developed interpretation of Hakushu’s crisp and gently smoky house style. Ripe pear, dried mint and oregano lead towards jasmine, mango, quince and menthol, while an elegant current of smoke provides structure without overwhelming the fruit and herbal character.
Bottled at 43%, Hakushu 18 balances mature fruit, fragrant herbs, soft sweetness and controlled smoke. Its long, pleasantly smoky finish and slight bitterness add complexity, giving the whisky a more contemplative character than the younger Hakushu age statements.
Why Choose Hakushu 18 Year Old Old Version 70cl, 43%
This bottle offers a highly regarded Japanese single malt in a discontinued presentation associated with Hakushu 18 releases from approximately 2009 to 2018. The older cream label and gold-lettered green carton give it a recognisable appearance that clearly separates it from the redesigned version introduced from 2018 onwards.
For drinkers, Hakushu 18 provides greater richness and maturity while preserving the freshness that defines the distillery. Ripe pear and tropical fruit are balanced by mint, oregano, jasmine, menthol and gently drying smoke, creating a profile that is mature without becoming excessively heavy or oak-dominated.
The smoky character is particularly refined. It remains fragrant and controlled rather than medicinal or aggressively peated, working alongside the herbs, orchard fruit and tropical notes to create Hakushu’s distinctive mountain-forest style. Suntory officially describes the Hakushu single-malt character as crisp, herbal and gently smoky.
For collectors, this version has clear appeal because its packaging is discontinued and its documented production period ended in 2018. It also occupies an important position above Hakushu 12 Year Old within Suntory’s traditional age-statement range, making it desirable for complete Hakushu and Japanese-whisky collections.
Ideal For.
This bottle is ideal for collectors of discontinued Hakushu presentations and older Suntory Japanese whisky releases.
It is ideal for enthusiasts wishing to compare the 2009–2018 old version with the redesigned Hakushu 18 presentation introduced from 2018 onwards.
It is also ideal for whisky drinkers who appreciate ripe pear, mango, quince, dried mint, oregano, jasmine, menthol and elegant smoke.
The bottle would make a prestigious gift for an experienced Japanese-whisky enthusiast, especially when supplied with its original dark green presentation carton in strong condition.

Collector’s Note
Hakushu 18 Year Old Old Version has strong collector appeal because it represents the long-running presentation used before the brand’s 2018 redesign. Its cream label, green bottle and gold-lettered dark green carton are immediately recognisable among earlier Suntory age-statement releases.
Whisky Auctioneer documents this specific 70cl, 43% presentation as having been bottled from approximately 2009 until 2018. An earlier Hakushu 18 design is separately documented from approximately 2006 to 2009, while the redesigned version is recorded from 2018 onwards. This places the pictured bottle within the second major packaging period of Hakushu 18.
The bottle should not be confused with the Hakushu 18 Year Old Limited Edition travel-retail release from 2016 or the later 48% Hakushu Peated Malt anniversary expressions. This is the standard 43% age-statement whisky presented in discontinued packaging rather than a separately formulated or individually numbered special edition.
Collector value depends heavily on physical condition. The most desirable examples retain a high fill level, clean cream label, intact black closure and original carton without fading, crushing, moisture marks, tears or excessive edge wear.
Because this bottle was not individually numbered, its desirability is based on the recognised 18-year age statement, discontinued presentation, Hakushu’s international reputation and the completeness and condition of the original packaging.
