Description

Green Spot Single Pot Still 70cl, 40% is a celebrated Irish whiskey produced at Midleton Distillery in County Cork for Dublin wine merchants and whiskey bonders Mitchell & Son. It is made from a traditional combination of malted and unmalted barley, giving the whiskey its characteristic silky texture and lively pot-still spice.

Although Green Spot carries no formal age statement, the current expression combines Single Pot Still whiskeys matured for between seven and ten years. Ageing takes place in new bourbon barrels, refill bourbon barrels and sherry casks, creating a balanced combination of orchard fruit, vanilla sweetness, toasted oak and richer dried-fruit character.

The whiskey is triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills. Its official tasting profile opens with aromatic oils, spices, orchard fruit and barley before developing green apples, cloves and toasted oak on the palate. Lingering barley and warming spice complete its smooth, approachable finish.

Presented in its recognisable bottle and cylindrical tube, Green Spot is an excellent introduction to Ireland’s distinctive Single Pot Still style while offering enough history and complexity to satisfy experienced whiskey drinkers.

Why Choose Green Spot Single Pot Still 70cl, 40%

Green Spot Single Pot Still 70cl, 40% stands out because it combines traditional Irish pot-still production with a varied bourbon-and-sherry maturation programme. The mixture of malted and unmalted barley provides a creamy mouthfeel and pronounced spice, while the casks contribute vanilla, orchard fruit, toasted wood and gentle sherry richness.

For whiskey drinkers, it offers an appealing balance between freshness and maturity. Green apple, barley and aromatic oils keep the profile vibrant, while cloves, oak and soft dried fruit provide warmth and depth.

For collectors, Green Spot carries an important connection to Ireland’s historic whiskey-bonding tradition. Its distinctive identity and position as the foundation of the modern Spot Whiskey range make it an essential bottle for anyone building a collection around Midleton or Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.

Collector’s Note

Green Spot holds an important place in Irish whiskey history. Mitchell & Son entered the whiskey-bonding business in 1887, sending fortified-wine casks to the old Jameson Distillery before returning the filled casks to mature beneath Dublin’s Fitzwilliam Lane.

The Spot names originated from the coloured paint marks used to identify intended maturation periods. Historically, blue represented seven years, green ten years, yellow twelve years and red fifteen years. Green Spot ultimately became the best-known survivor of this traditional range.

The standard 70cl release is not individually numbered, but older bottle designs, tube variations and discontinued labels may interest dedicated collectors. Complete examples retaining an intact seal, clean labels, a strong fill level and an undamaged presentation tube offer the best display appeal.
