Description

Francis Ford Coppola Director’s Cut Cabernet Sauvignon 75cl, 14.5% is a bold and richly textured Californian red wine produced from grapes grown in Alexander Valley, one of Sonoma County’s most respected regions for Cabernet Sauvignon.

The bottle shown is the 2016 vintage, created from 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec and 2% Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon provides the wine’s dark-fruit concentration and structure, while the supporting varieties add colour, floral character, spice and a smoother texture.

Alexander Valley contains several soil types and climatic zones. Volcanic soils are found along the eastern hillsides, rocky clay loam appears towards the western edge and alluvial gravel covers sections of the valley floor. These variations allow the winery to source fruit with different flavour characteristics and combine them into a richly expressive wine.

The 2016 Director’s Cut Cabernet Sauvignon delivers concentrated aromas of kirsch, cassis, blackberry, lavender and graphite. On the palate, layers of dark fruit are accompanied by tobacco, mocha, anise, vanilla and integrated oak.

Bottled at the stated 14.5%, it is full-bodied and warming, with structured tannins and sufficient freshness to balance its ripe fruit and oak influence. It is particularly well suited to grilled red meat, slow-cooked beef, roast lamb and mature cheese.

Why Choose Francis Ford Coppola Director’s Cut Cabernet Sauvignon 75cl, 14.5%

This wine stands out because it expresses the rich, fruit-driven character of Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon while retaining structure, freshness and complexity.

The Cabernet Sauvignon provides cassis, blackberry, dark cherry and firm tannins. Petit Verdot contributes colour and spice, Cabernet Franc brings aromatic lift, while Malbec and Merlot add plum fruit and softness.

The 2016 vintage was awarded a Silver Medal at the 2019 International Wine and Spirit Competition. Judges highlighted its chocolate, cassis and mint aromas, ripe fruit, integrated oak, smooth tannins and long, rich finish.

The distinctive wraparound label also makes the bottle immediately recognisable. Director’s Cut labels were inspired by zoetrope strips, early moving-picture devices that celebrate Francis Ford Coppola’s connection to cinema.

Ideal For.

This bottle is ideal for wine drinkers who enjoy full-bodied California Cabernet Sauvignon with cassis, blackberry, dark plum, tobacco, mocha and oak spice.

It is ideal for pairing with ribeye steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef, venison, gourmet burgers, mushroom dishes and mature cheeses.

It is also ideal for Francis Ford Coppola collectors looking for an older Director’s Cut vintage with distinctive cinematic packaging and several years of bottle development.

Collector’s Note

Francis Ford Coppola Director’s Cut Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 is primarily a premium drinking wine rather than a numbered limited edition.

Its collector appeal comes from the recognisable cinematic presentation, Alexander Valley origin and the opportunity to compare different Director’s Cut vintages and changing blend compositions.

The 2016 release has additional interest because its complete blend is documented and it received a Silver Medal at the 2019 International Wine and Spirit Competition. Its combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Merlot gives it a distinct identity within the series.

As an older vintage, storage conditions are important. Bottles kept consistently cool, dark and undisturbed, with a sound cork, strong fill level and clean label, will offer the greatest drinking and display appeal.
