The first in a series of annual releases from The Macallan, the wonderfully titled A Night on Earth in Scotland is inspired by Hogmanay, Scotland’s New Year’s Eve celebration. Created by Macallan lead whisky maker Sarah Burgess, whose memories of Hogmanay were a key influence to the expression, this single malt features whiskies aged in American and European oak sherry seasoned casks, as well as ex-bourbon barrels.
Those ex-bourbon barrels have imparted a distinctive helping of vanilla notes to the whisky, an homage to the ‘first footer’, a custom of Hogmanay where it’s supposed to be good luck for a dark-haired person to be the first to visit your home after midnight on New Year. Apparently, the ‘first footer’ will be carrying shortbread (that’s where the vanilla notes we were talking about come into this), whisky, and coal for the fire.
A Night on Earth in Scotland features designs by Japanese-French illustrator Erica Dorn, once again inspired by the New Year celebrations around the world.

Dorn’s artwork for this release is inspired by the historic fire rituals dominant in New Year celebrations around the world.

The 2022 release of The Macallan A Night on Earth in Scotland. Full of symbolism linked to Scotland’s Hogmanay celebrations on the 31st of December and the ‘first footing’ tradition, where it’s good luck for the first person welcomed into your home after midnight to bring whisky, shortbread and coal. There are shortbread notes aplenty in this Highland single malt, coming through from bourbon barrels, and sweet festive spice from sherry seasoned American and European oak casks. Presented in a box with artwork by Erica Dorn, with the red colours representing the warm fire from the coal. The Macallan A Night On Earth – Jerez is another impressive limited edition bottling from the ‘A Night On Earth’ series which this time brings us to the homeland of sherry itself: Jerez de la Frontera. The Macallan has a long tradition of creating sherry cask-aged whisky so it was really only a matter of time before it released a single malt Scotch whisky that championed this vital connection. The Macallan A Night on Earth Jerez was aged in sherry-seasoned American and European oak casks and celebrates New Year’s Eve in Jerez, or Nocheviejo, a night full of meaning and tradition. It was bottled with natural colour at 43% ABV.

This limited-edition release from Macallan draws inspiration from Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s depiction of nature in architecture, art and design. It was aged in sherry casks, resulting in notes of sweet oak, candied ginger, fresh apples and hints of tea leaf.
Inspired by Mackintosh’s exceptional depiction of nature in architecture, art and design, The Macallan Whisky Mastery Team’s exemplary art of whisky making is expressed in The Macallan Art is the Flower single malt scotch whisky.
This art collaboration explores nature and its power to inspire. The inspiration for this beautiful release is the world renowned Scottish architect, designer and artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh whose unique style continues to influence artisans and global projects today.
Mackintosh’s 1902 stained-glass panel ‘The Spirit of the Rose’ gracefully captures the philosophy of the tree of life with unique and iconic visual character. His interpretation of the perpetual advance of nature inspired the creation of The Macallan Art is the Flower.
Mackintosh poetically considered art as the flower to life’s green leaf. He appealed to the arts and crafts community in his 1902 lecture on Seemliness to ‘offer the flowers of the art that is in you – the symbols of all that is noble – and beautiful – and inspiring.’
This single malt, matured in sherry seasoned European oak casks, recognising Mackintosh’s time in Europe, presents a beautiful, deeply coloured whisky with flavour characteristics that have been allowed to develop naturally over time.
Art is the Flower, with aroma and tasting notes of fruits that bear their own blossoms, is a delicate nod to the beautiful words from Mackintosh’s lecture on Seemliness.

flower a beautiful living thing – something that will convince the world that
there may be – there are things more precious – more beautiful more lasting
than life. But to do this you must offer real living – beautifully coloured flowers
