Highland Park Earl Haakon 18 Year Old 1993 Edition 3 (70cl, 54.9%)
The final release in the cult-favourite, uber-collectable collection from Highland Park: “the Magnus series”. Earl Haakon was a character in the Orkney Inga Saga, who murdered his cousin, Magnus (the inspiration for the previous two bottlings in the range). This is aged for 18 years, and it’s absolutely stunning.
Balvenie 21 Year Old The Second Red Rose (70cl, 48.1%)
A 2021 release in the Balvenie Stories series, The Second Red Rose harks back to a release from the distillery’s history. The Balvenie Rose was finished in a Port pipes, resulting in a hue that was befitting of its name (which itself was an homage to what Margaret Douglas paid King James II as rent for staying in Balvenie Castle – a single red rose). For The Second Red Rose, the 21 year old single malt you see here, Balvenie’s malt master David C. Stewart chose to finish the expression in Australian Shiraz casks, imparting a whole host of ripe fruit notes, touches of blackberry and peach, a helping of rich oak, and of course, a rosy hue.
Released in late 2021, this is part of the Stories series from Balvenie. This particular whisky has been finished in ex-Shiraz red wine casks and is the 5th edition in the range which began in 2008.
It was made available in the UK via selected merchants which included branches of high-end department store, Selfridges.

The Maxwell House Decanter was considered one of the most beautiful of its time and oddly enough it was not Jack Daniel who was responsible for designing it. That honor instead went to Lem Motlow. The origin of this decanter’s name dates back to the year 1859 when Colonel John Overton Jr. began construction on a new hotel in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Ironically, had it not been for a night out on the town, this hotel might never have been built…
Over the years, the Maxwell House Hotel became a well-known stopping point for famous people passing through the South. Lem Motlow knew of the hotel’s popularity and prestige and saw this as a business opportunity for the Distillery…
To commemorate the decanter that Lem Motlow first presented to Colonel Overton, the Distillery released a half gallon replica bottle in 1971.

Jack Daniels 10 Year Old Batch 2 70cl 48.5cl
It’s been 100 years or so since the Jack Daniel Distillery released a whiskey of 10 years of age or greater. Evolving Jack Daniel’s past aged-stated whiskey process, these Tennessee Whiskey barrels have been aging in the Buzzard’s Roost of our barrelhouse, and methodically relocated to the lower floors of different barrel houses to extend the aging process for the last 10 summers. The extreme weather variation at different locations in the barrel houses along with longevity in our handmade oak barrels creates an intense, unique character of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey.
Jack Daniel’s is now fully committed to experimenting with their lineup. After spending decades churning out Old Number 7 and Gentlemen Jack, the distillery in Lynchburg, TN has finally decided to fully embrace the whisky craze and explore new and exciting expressions for their lineup. After winning praise for their Barrel Proof and Bonded products, it feels right that they are now exploring longer maturations. So, while typical Jack Daniel’s is aged for “at least 4 years”, what we are drinking today is aged for at least 2.5 times that – meaning we have a full 10 year age statement!
Jack Daniel’s debuted this 10 year product last year to raucous excitement, and have continued the fun this year with a second batch of 10 year and the addition of an even older 12 year product this time around. And while Jack Daniel’s 12 year, this 10 year is rocking a 97 proof. And honestly, that seems pretty reasonable in a world of wildly expensive limited editions.
Jack Daniel’s 10 year (Batch 2) is an impressive follow up to the highly regarded first batch of Jack Daniel’s 10 year. While I never had the chance to try that first batch, if it was anything like this one, I know why there was so much hype. The 10 years in oak has clearly made a significant impact on the spirit, taking that sometimes brittle Jack Daniel’s profile and creating a rich and deep profile with more oak, complexity, and a fantastic mouthfeel. The longer maturation has balanced the banana Laffy Taffy sweetness and has elevated the profile to an approachable, yet complex place. This is a great pour worth seeking out. The MSRP is spot on here, so anything close to it is an instant buy for me. So, while it isn’t as challenging as Jack Daniel’s Barrel Proof can be, this is a fantastic addition to the lineup and might have you rethinking your Jack Daniel’s prejudices.

Glenfiddich 21 Year Old Experimental Series Winter Storm (70cl, 43%)
For our third experiment, Malt Master Brian Kinsman travelled to Canada to meet a renowned winemaker in Niagara. There he learned how the grapes had to be picked by moonlight at -10˚C to produce the intensely sweet Icewine. Upon his return to the Glenfiddich Distillery Brian started experimenting with several French oak Icewine casks from the Canadian winery, filling them with different Glenfiddich aged malts for up to six months. Only the rarer whiskies, those aged for 21 years, could cope with the extra Icewine intensity. The taste is a perfect combination of both pioneering liquids, the heightened candied sweets and oakiness of Glenfiddich are complemented by mouth-watering tropical fruit notes and a luscious sweetness from the unique Icewine cask finish. First released in October 2017, the long-awaited second batch is now available.
The third release in their experimental series utilises French Oak “Ice Wine” casks from the freezing vineyards of the renowned Peller Estates winery near Niagara, Canada.

Royal Lochnagar distillery is based on the Abergeldie Estate in Royal Deeside, Scotland, close to the mountain Lochnagar.
The first Lochnagar distillery was burnt down in suspicious circumstances in 1824 and a replacement again burnt down in 1841. In 1845 John Begg built the “new” Lochnagar. The distillery was awarded its Royal Warrant in 1848 when John Begg invited Prince Albert to visit the distillery from the nearby Balmoral Castle, the Queen’s residence in the Highlands. The next day the distillery was visited by Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children.
Today Royal Lochnagar is owned by Diageo, and the distillery produces a relatively small amount of whisky, most of which is used in Johnnie Walker black and blue label.

NOTICE THE LEVEL IS ON THE SHOULDER
This very rare and highly sought-after 10 year old Laphroaig Cask Strength Red Stripe Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky comes from the famous cask strength series and is the successor to the legendary Laphroaig Cask Strength Green Stripe. Bottled in the year 2005-2007 at cask strength 55.7% abv, this terrific single malt is one of the legendary whiskies from Laphroaig, where the rough Atlantic climate around the island of Islay is literally felt on the tongue. The oak casks used in the production of the 10 years Laphroaig cask strength scotch whisky are lightly fired before filling to impart the slightly sweet vanilla-nuttiness of the oak. The Islay single malt whisky is then matured in Laphroaig s warehouses for a period of 10 years before being bottled at cask strength (straight from the wood).
This exceptional and multiple award-winning Laphroaig Islay single malt scotch whisky was rated 92 points by whiskyfun.com (Serge Valentin), is hard to find today and a special highlight for enthusiasts, investors and whisky-collectors of extraordinary Scotch whiskies!
