A brill blended malt Scotch whisky from the Caisteal Chamuis range, produced by the Mossburn team (the folks behind the Torabhaig Distillery, and the Mossburn series of independent bottlings). It was named after a castle on the Isle of Skye, this expression was initially aged in a combination of first-fill and refill American oak hogshead, before being married together for a finishing period in bourbon barrels. A decidedly smoky dram, comprised of peated whiskies from the Scottish Isles, with wafts of sweet vanilla imparted by the aforementioned bourbon barrels.

This expression from Mossburn’s Caisteal Chamuis range is a marvellous blended malt Scotch whisky made with Island malts that have been matured for 12 years in refill American oak hogsheads, and then given a finishing period in Oloroso sherry casks. The peaty notes of the Island whiskies blends deliciously with the sweet dried fruit notes from the sherry casks, making for a satisfying expression. The name Caisteal Chamuis comes from a castle that you’ll find up on the Isle of Skye, which is a neat connection.

Smoke & Dagger is not messing around when it comes to smoke. This one from the Alchemy Series combines older malts with boisterous young smoke bombs, and even features some recognisable names like Bunnahabhain Moine, as well as the heaviest peated malt in the Black Bottle reserves. For an extra layer of smoke, grain whisky was added to casks that previously held a highly-peated island malt.

In early 2021, Black Bottle kicked off its Alchemy Series with two tasty whiskies, including this blended Scotch whisky titled Island Smoke (as well as the Double Cask expression)! As you might be able to infer from the name, this is a rather smoky dram – definitely one for the peat fans out there! It offers up whiffs of coastal air, scorched oak, seaweed and more, alongside familiar vanilla-rich sweetness and flashes of spice.

  • ( 0 Customer Review )

One of two initial releases in the Black Bottle Alchemy Series, Double Cask brings together malt whiskies finished in Spanish sherry casks with grain whisky aged in red wine casks. Boasting heavy red fruit influence, though well balanced by subtle whiffs of toasted sugar and savoury nuts, this should make for a great late evening dram. A great start to the Black Bottle Alchemy Series, alongside the Island Smoke expression.

Black Bottle Andean Oak Alchemy Series 70cl, 46.3%

We have is a very experimental Scotch Whisky. As far as we know, this from Black Bottle is the first to have whisky matured in virgin Andean oak casks as part of its blend. The variety is unique to Colombia and Panamá and is regarded for its ability to thrive at altitudes that others cannot. Andean oak imparts a similar character to American oak, but with more tannins and spice. It was chosen in this case to elevate the creamy, smooth grain whiskies of the blend, by finishing them for seven months in Andean oak casks with various toast and char levels.

Relaunched in 2013, Black Bottle Blended Scotch whisky now features a balanced mix of fruitiness and spice alongside the peaty Islay notes that the brand has been known for. This change in direction is a return to Black Bottle’s past, as it is said to have been inspired by what the whisky was like when it was made all the way back in 1879. This has also inspired the new old-style black glass bottle, which gave the whisky its name.
