This expression offers an irresistible doubling of flavour due to the double maturation in two casks made of American oak.
Still-maturing whisky from our standard ex-bourbon barrels is transferred to quarter casks and left to rest in our warehouse just a stone throw from the Atlantic shore.
This process represents Laphroaig breathing new life into a once-defunct tradition: the use of the smaller cask size, which ensures increased contact with the oak, creating a soft and velvety edge to complement Laphroaig distinctive peatiness.
On the nose the sensation is toffee and caramel, caused by the vanillas and tannins of the American oak, plus a dryness from the wood oil.
The finish is long and alternates between this sweetness and smoke.

The distillery sits on the rugged north Aberdeenshire coast, nestled behind the beautiful surfer’s haven, Sandend Bay. Glenfiddich Orchard Experiment Experimental Series #05 70cl, 43%

Distilled by Glenfiddich, this release forms part of their Experimental Series. This expression is the fifth release in the range and is a collaboration with the Somerset Cider Brandy company. It been finished in Somerset Pomona spirit casks, which is a blend of cider brandy and apple juice, and bottled at a strength of 43% abv.
Orchard Experiment is the fifth release in Glenfiddich Distillery’s Experimental Series and is the world’s first single malt to be finished in Somerset Pomona casks. The palate is bright and fruity, with notes of crunchy apples, vanilla, oaky spice and caramel that linger in the finish.
A tremendous addition to the Experimental Series from Glenfiddich, combining the influences of Scotland and Somerset! This single malt has been finished in casks that previously held Somerset Pomona Spirit (a blend of apple cider brandy and apple juice) from the Somerset Cider Brandy Co.! This experiment came about after Glenfiddich’s Malt Master Brian Kinsman paid a visit to the Somerset Cider Brandy Co. to meet with its Master Distiller Matilda Temperley. After a stroll around the vintage orchards, the idea was born, the casks were sent from Somerset to Scotland and filled with a core of delicious malt, before being left to ripen. Top stuff for sipping on a warm evening, perhaps after a nice glass of cider.

Fans of Wormtub whisky will be pleased to see another batch of its splendid 10-year-old single malt here! As with previous batches, Batch 5 of this spectacular Speysider is aged for 10 years, during which time, the whisky was reracked into a host of first-fill sherry casks to complete its maturation. What came out of those casks is the magnificently richly hued single malt you see before you, it was bottled without chill filtration or added colour at a bold 56.1% ABV. You read that correctly by the way, no added colour – that impressive hue is all from the cask!
The whisky is sourced from an undisclosed Speyside distillery that still uses a rather old-school (and rather brilliant) bit of kit – a worm tub condenser. These classic bits of distilling equipment are made up of long copper coiled tubes housed in cold water in a large vat. You don’t see too many of them around these days, with many distilleries having replaced them with more efficient shell and tube condensers. More efficient perhaps, but what is lost is the distinctive heavy, robust flavour profiles that can be achieved with a worm tub, and that are adored by distillers and whisky enthusiasts alike.

Peat and sherry is a great combo, though sometimes it can be a bit like a shouting match between a foghorn and a washing machine full of pots and pans. Thankfully, this one shows off a welcome harmony between the two. It’s a marvellous variation of Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire, featuring the same smoky 10 year old Islay single malt, though instead of just 25% of it being finished in sherry casks, the entirety of the whisky was finished in them. Benriach’s Smoky Quarter Cask celebrates the distillery’s use of peat, which began in the 1970s, harking back to whisky production of old, while breaking the conventional style of whisky from the Speyside region. Initially matured in bourbon barrels, the whisky is then transferred to bespoke quarter casks.
