A beautiful, extremely limited edition Macallan released for travel retail, Oscuro is made with whisky from 1987 and 1997 and it’s sherried and incredibly rich.
This is the 2015 redesign of the packaging, now presented in the premium decanter style bottle first used for the Macallan Reflexion.
Dark, lusciously rich and satisfying. The Macallan Oscuro is drawn exclusively from oak casks seasoned with Oloroso Sherry. An exceptionally high proportion of these are first fill, which endow the whisky with a rich, deep Burnished copper colour and intense flavour. When the casks are at the peak of maturation, the whisky is gently reduced to 46.5% alcohol by volume with natural spring water drawn from boreholes deep under The Macallan Estate. It is then matured in slumbering casks for at least six months, allowing the flavours to blend. It undergoes no further strength reduction and is filtered non-chill at ambient room temperature before being bottled.

This luxurious expression highlights the magic and science in The Macallan’s intricate whisky making process, as the whisky maker identifies the exceptional oak casks which impart the intense and highly complex flavour profile.
Soft aromas of vanilla with rich raisin lead the journey of discovery into this single malt whisky, followed by a sweet fusion of fresh apple, lemon and orange. Intense sweet raisin flavours dominate the palate, before giving way to vanilla and dark chocolate, with layers of light citrus zest. Every cask of exceptional single malt whisky maturing at The Macallan Estate has its own personality, with little nuances which make them unique.
From time to time our whisky makers come across casks maturing in warehouses which stand out from the others in a very particular way.
These hand-selected casks are a rare and special discovery.
Rare Cask is created from oak casks which exhibit incredibly rich, smooth complexity, highlighted through a sweet raisin note. These rare casks of The Macallan have an entirely natural deep ruby mahogany colour, and an intense and highly complex flavour profile.
Discovering the parallels between sound, aroma, flavour and colour explored through the shared element of wood, for this release we came together with renowned musician, Charlie Burchill of Simple Minds, to explore a sensorial world.
Charlie’s ability to identify rare tasting notes such as raisin, is similar to how he both composes and plays music. He explores how Rare Cask might sound through working with a Luthier in the South of Spain to create a guitar crafted from the same European Oak wood as The Macallan Casks are crafted from.
Together, we discover the core synergies of a great creation, and how interactions with a work of art in both realms of music and the craft of whisky making aren’t so distant from one another.
